Next row in my #readinglogsnake is the graphic novel March Book One. I read this in honor of #BlackHistoryMonth. The March trilogy gives Congressman John Lewis' account of his lifelong struggle for civil and human rights. This covers his younger years and the lunch counter sit ins. Beautifully drawn and a great way to share light of the civil rights movement. 5/5 ⭐️ #ARRCReads #BooksAndCrafts

Book 1 of 3. This is a start up of how John Lewis grew up and got into the civil rights movement. Well written and paced. Dark colors throughout; no colors. This gives the story a certain feel to me. Hard to put into words. At least the colors don‘t take away from Lewis‘s autobiographical story. It‘s serious stuff. This whole training to react nonviolently to prepare for their sit-ins struck me.

Really well-written. Basically an autobiographical telling of John Lewis‘ early life. The art is okay, it‘s a little too sketchy (blurry lines/edges) for me.

March is an important book in the telling of our country‘s history. Photo upper right tells of a 1958 sit in at a lunch counter in Wichita KS. The page of March: Book One open to the Greensboro NC sit in a year + later.

#BookSpinBingo - Going to spend tomorrow on my #DoubleSpin book and see if I can get that last row. Oh! Finishing March also gets the diagonal starting Column 1 Row 1, so I actually have eight bingos. Yowza.

This powerful graphic novel covered John Lewis‘s childhood to his activism as a young adult. The sacrifices Mr. Lewis and his contemporaries made, with being beaten and jailed repeatedly for nonviolent protests, cannot be minimized or forgotten(the included pic is from one of his earliest arrests). I love the method of using a graphic novel to tell Mr. Lewis‘s story and I‘m excited to read the rest of the series. 5/5 - I heavily recommend to all

Told as a memoir from Congressman John Lewis (RIP), this book takes a look at his growing up in rural Alabama, & provides a glimpse of how life was for Black families under segregation laws in the 40s/50s. We learn of his meeting with Martin Luther King Jr & Jim Lawson; the non-violent lunch counter sit-ins...events that lead to the Civil Rights Movement which is recounted in Books 2 & 3. Superb artwork/storytelling.

To many, if you say Graphic Novel they think super heroes and villains, but GNs are so much more. They are history lessons, biography, political commentary, and sometimes just fun.

The world of GNs are ever expanding and our #LMPBC looks to explore these expanding worlds. We are looking for 2 people to explore with us.

You can sign up here https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080444aead2ca0ff2-litsy10

LibrarianRyan If you have any questions, or are new to #LMPBC and want to know more, just ask. It's a fun way to find new book and do a book club at a slower pace. Plus most graphic novels can be read in an hour or so. 3y
Buchbeeg I grabbed a spot! This is the first time I've heard of this, and it sounds amazing. 3y
LibrarianRyan @Buchbeeg That's great!. When we get our 4th what we do is put up suggestions of what we want our choice of book to be. Either a GN you already own or one you have been wanting buy. The group will then tell you of your suggestions what ones they have read or are of the most interest and then you pick. You read it, mark it all up, and then mail it off. each month you will get a different members book to mark up, and at the end you get yours bac 3y

I‘ve been participating each Sunday in the #BLM protest in my small Georgia college town. Reading this trilogy of graphic memoirs about the Civil Rights Movement by the late Representative John Lewis has been immensely moving and inspiring. The events of these books happened not so long ago and the call for equality in America remains just as urgent. Each book is a timely reminder of the promise of our democracy and our duty to see it fulfilled.

CaitlinR These graphic novels are wonderful. I‘d love to see them adopted as curricular materials. How great that you‘re marching! 4y
underground_bks @CaitlinR the weekly protests have become so important to me! I just get so demoralized during the week, and standing for what I believe and the sense of community involved in the marching really gives me hope. I am really curious to learn more about nonviolence. And I want every kid in America to get the chance to read these books! 4y

Considering the current events with BLM movement, it was important to be educated. Book 1 focuses on sit ins in Nashville and it really is an incredible piece of history. The sit ins at lunch counters was an act of non-violence move led by Jim Lawson. It‘s a story of incredible black and white students who started this movement who were then humiliated, beaten up, arrested just for asking to be served in a restaurant equally as white people.
