Ghosts | Raina Telgemeier
Catrina and her family are moving to the coast of Northern California because her little sister, Maya, is sick. Cat isn't happy about leaving her friends for Bahia de la Luna, but Maya has cystic fibrosis and will benefit from the cool, salty air that blows in from the sea. As the girls explore their new home, a neighbor lets them in on a secret: There are ghosts in Bahia de la Luna. Maya is determined to meet one, but Cat wants nothing to do with them. As the time of year when ghosts reunite with their loved ones approaches, Cat must figure out how to put aside her fears for her sister's sake -- and her own. Raina Telgemeier has masterfully created a moving and insightful story about the power of family and friendship, and how it gives us the courage to do what we never thought possible."

My daughter recommended this to me because “It‘s so good once you start you won‘t stand up again because you have to finish the whole thing.” She was right of course. A very touching book- I‘m glad I was alone when I read it because I teared up at certain places.

I rarely read a #graphicnovel. This middle grade one was enjoyable on many levels. The “ghost” part describes the Mexican celebration of the festival of the dead. That part of the storyline reminded me of the movie “Coco”, which I loved. I found the inclusion of the young sister who has cystic fibrosis the most interesting part. The reader learns of the illness and the treatments in a gentle way. #booked2019

Picked up this graphic novel today to read with my adult student who is learning English. Her young daughter recommended it! This beautiful fountain was built in 1924, as a memorial. It is in front of one of my local libraries, and I think it is so beautiful. #graphicnovel #booked2019

Omg, I flew through this book in one setting!! I loved it!

It combined many subjects, such as moving to a new town, Cystic Fibrosis, and Día de los Muertos (reminded me a little bit as a cross between the book, “Five Feet Apart” and the movie, “Coco”).

I highly recommend this to any age and give praise to Raina for another great GN ?

2- probably Reese‘s pumpkins ?
3- any true ghost story book
4-I like the orange Halloween lights.
5-Yes, if they claim to be true. I don‘t like fictional stuff like that.
6- The Bell Witch. That one was neat.

My son loves to read, but practicing his reading in Spanish is not his favorite because it‘s work. In the last few months our library added Spanish graphic novels. Thank goodness. I brought Ghosts home and just left it in his room. He read it twice before bed. I‘m pretty sure he‘s read it at least 4 times now!

I mostly drew a blank for this week's #yawednesday, but I'll throw this in. It's MG more than YA, but it does paranormal in a not-so-creepy way. Also deals with sibling issues, specifically the burden on a "normal" sister when the younger sister has a serious disease (cystic fibrosis) that essentially takes over the entire family life.

LibrarianRyan Loved this book. I think it's a great pick for YA Wednesday. 1y

I enjoyed this. The girls are learning more about their Mexican heritage, and I found it really interesting to also learn about Dia de los Muertos. I also learned a little bit about cystic fibrosis. This is a YA graphic novel and I loved the illustrations; they are fairly simple, bright, and effective. For the Dia de los Muertos celebration, I thought the illustrations showed the joy and fun of the night.

Anything by Raina Telgemeier tends to be a winner, but I especially enjoyed this one. Catrina and her family have to move to the coast because the weather is better for her sister, who has cystic fibrosis. Telgemeier uses the Day of the Dead and Catrina‘s Mexican background as a way for Catrina to learn how to deal with her sister‘s illness.

Loved the Day of the Dead premise of this middle grade graphic novel. The colors in those scenes really pop. The author does a great job at depicting the sibling relationship between older sister Cat and younger sister Maya, who has cystic fibrosis. I think it was explained in an informative, sensitive way. The plot had a nice supernatural tinge to round out some of the sadness of the medical storyline.

KarenUK I loved this one too... My hubby has CF and I‘ve never read any other book that featured his condition 👍💕 2y

Another state, another crappy hotel laundry room... at least I've got this cute MG graphic novel to keep me company. It's about a girl who moves to a new town because of her sister's poor health. It turns out the town has a close relationship with their departed loved ones. She has a difficult time because the ghosts remind her of her sister's mortality. It's a quick read, with a Day of the Dead backdrop, and much more touching then 'Drama' was.

LiteraryinLititz I liked this one too. Hope your trip goes well! 2y

I've enjoyed Telgemeier's memoirs, but I think fiction is where she really shines. This all-ages comic focuses on the bonds between the living and the dead in a California town whose inhabitants revere, celebrate, and routinely hang around with their ghosts. Catrina, a young newcomer, struggles with this dynamic due in large part to her beloved sister, who has a chronic condition that may shorten her life. It's heartfelt, affecting stuff. #comics

Quick stop on our way to lacrosse practice and I look back and see this cutie engrossed in his reading! He still prefers graphic novels to traditional, but that's okay because they're the gateway drug to life-long reading. #FutureReader

Melissa_J My daughter only reads graphic novels at this point, and Raina Telgemier is her favourite 😊 2y
AndreaReads @Melissa_J I keep wanting to tell him he needs to read other books (but I wonder if that's just the English teacher in me). He really likes them, and they build his reading confidence. I've read Raina Telfemier's Smile and loved it, and this one is on my TBR. 2y

damyantig Graphic novels are awesome. They have a huge variety, and some are literary. I loved Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi 2y
Melissa_J @AndreaReads the more I try to encourage my daughter to pick up other books the more she rebels against it. So I no longer try and hope she'll learn to love non-graphic novels on her own. She will read non-fiction, which is a good thing, but actual novels she wants nothing to do with. 2y
AndreaReads @Melissa_J Same. I also try to do that with my students. I don't want reading to become a chore, and I'm afraid that if I tell what they can't read, then it becomes work. @Jen_Reads @damyantig I definitely think there are some incredible graphic novels, and I've used them in my teaching, but for whatever reason I sometimes struggle when he doesn't want to read anything else. I'm getting over it, though. 😉 2y
damyantig @AndreaReads the fact that he's reading is a blessing. I'm often invited to teach at workshops where they kids say they don't like to read. Just get him whatever he reads, and let things take care of themselves. I started with graphic novels myself, and was soon reading everything from Checkov to Whitman to Shakespeare 😂 2y
Izai.Amorim I'd upgrade him to #presentreader! He's doing alright! 2y

I appreciated the story and themes of the books. It's hard to have a family member with a chronic illness. Everyone has to grow up a little bit faster, be a little more responsible. I passed it on to a friend with daughters who will appreciate it as well.

LibrarianRyan I liked that book. I'm working my way through through her other books. 2y
jpmcwisemorgan @LibrarianRyan I did too. My friend's oldest daughter has read a couple of others by the author so I'm glad I passed it on to them. There are three girls, one with severe asthma and some immune system problems, so I think they'll appreciate the themes in the books. My friend was an only child so she doesn't get some of the conflict AND protectiveness that comes with siblings. 2y
