Gene Luen Yang is the National Ambassador for Young People's Literature.A tour-de-force by New York Times bestselling graphic novelist Gene Yang, American Born Chinese tells the story of three apparently unrelated characters: Jin Wang, who moves to a new neighborhood with his family only to discover that he's the only Chinese-American student at his new school; the powerful Monkey King, subject of one of the oldest and greatest Chinese fables; and Chin-Kee, a personification of the ultimate negative Chinese stereotype, who is ruining his cousin Danny's life with his yearly visits. Their lives and stories come together with an unexpected twist in this action-packed modern fable. American Born Chinese is an amazing ride, all the way up to the astonishing climax.American Born Chinese is the winner of the 2007 Michael L. Printz Award, a 2006 National Book Award Finalist for Young People's Literature, the winner of the 2007 Eisner Award for Best Graphic Album: New, an Eisner Award nominee for Best Coloring, a 2007 Bank Street Best Children's Book of the Year, and a New York Timesbestseller.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5)

This book is about finding freedom through self acceptance. Some people wish to be like Tony Stark, Bruce Wayne, Bill Gates or Kim Kardashian. You can wear your costumes on Halloween, but eventually the mask has to come off. You are left with yourself; your TRUE self.

And this is why I still read comics despite how often I‘m disappointed by them. This is a really excellent exploration of the author‘s experience growing up Chinese American that makes excellent use of the format. It combines straightforward memoir with scenes of Chinese folklore and some pretty gut wrenching media stereotypes. Highly recommend.

Starting off my long weekend sitting on the deck and reading.

Just bought Jacques this harness so he‘s able to join me (I can‘t trust him to stay in the yard yet).

Now off to the pool. #BFCr2 update later today.

Tamra I want to do the same for our cat while we‘re camping but I‘m afraid he‘d constantly be trying to get out then! He likes to go in & out on our deck at home innumerable times a day (no stairs out). 3mo
twohectobooks @Tamra he seems to be liking it! Camping would be more challenging depending on your set up and your cat eg energetic escape artist vs timid lounger. 3mo

A re-read for my comic book group. This month‘s theme was immigration stories. This comic illustrates the desire to “fit in” with white American culture that many young immigrants or children of immigrants have. Not to mention the racist stereotypes that they deal with as well. The 3 storylines come together in an amazing way.

Caterina I read this for a college course and loved it!! 💕 12mo

I loved it! It was really funny, and had some great themes, like acceptance of oneself. I will definitely be reading the author‘s other books.

Number 6 for #makemereadit! This YA graphic novel has three alternating storylines and at first I found it a bit uneven. One story is handled more seriously, one is told as a myth/legend, and the third is set up as a sitcom—caricatured & with a drawn-in laugh track. But when the three collapse into one, it‘s done so well that it turned into a pick for me. Yang does a wonderful job of exploring themes of assimilation, fitting in, and race-shame.

I just loved this mix of autobiography and mythology. What a spectacular trick Yang plays on the reader! It was really adorable and a fantastic reminder of how terrible it is to look back on yourself as a teenager.

We need more #ownvoices graphic novels out there like this one. An excellent story about identity, stereotypes, and adolescence, I was impressed at how Gene Luen Yang was able to weave together the three storylines as the book progressed. I‘m glad I read this before we returned it to the library, as it sparked some excellent conversation with Maya, who had asked if I could read it, too.

I read this book while I was on vacation this month. It was phenomenal!
While I enjoyed all the parts of the story, my absolute favorite was the story of the Monkey King. It was funny, insightful, relatable, and wonderfully illustrated. Everyone should read this book. Seriously, if you have not read it go do so.
10 out of 10!

Loved this! Yang tells three separate stories that blend together in the end to build an immigrant story of absolute depth, told on a level meant for middle schoolers. Genuinely amazing and perfectly executed. Must read more of his work!

Yang not only builds three separate stories at once, but weaves them together for a real impact. I found myself hurting and ashamed when I read the types of jokes people have made at the expense of others that I know I've seen before, for myself and all of us who have seen such things and were slow to realize the hurt they inflicted. I appreciated the reminder lesson. And I also appreciated the art. Glad I finally got to this one.

This was very different than I expected. I think it‘s a modern retelling of a Chinese fable. It moves between 3 storylines - modern, ancient and fantasy. I love the illustration - especially the Monkey King! #letsgetgraphicweeklongmarathon

Today‘s #uncannyoctober theme: #whimsical. I just picked up this #graphicnovel and devoured it. I think I‘ve actually only read one other graphic novel in life (if you don‘t count growing up on Archie comics), but after reading this one, I feel like I need to rectify that situation. #litsyreads @RealLifeReading

ABC was one of the first #comics I used in my classroom, and it was one of the first time I remember thinking this comics in the classroom thing could be a big deal. Paneling with Gene Yang was full circle for me and the work we did at #ALAAC17 for Pop Culture Classroom, French Comics, and the Children's Book Council was SO rewarding and reaffirming. #Comicsarerealbooks y'all
