Celebrity book clubs: love em? Hate em? Think they‘re a good way to get more people to read? Are there any you follow? Leave a comment with your thoughts and we might share it on the next podcast episode! #EclecticQuestion

SW-T I think they 1. Get people who might otherwise hesitate to pick up a book to read, 2. Expose folks to more titles, 3. Help undecided readers pick their next book. I don‘t follow any celebrity book clubs myself, though I do see their picks listed in various newsletters. 2mo
DGRachel I think they are good for encouraging a wider audience to actually pick up a book and read. I don‘t follow any myself and usually avoid Oprah‘s picks because at least her first year or so, I hated the books she picked, so I know she and I just don‘t mesh when it comes to books. 2mo
LibrarianRyan For non readers I think they are a great way to expose people to new books. But as a long term reader I find they either hit the biggest book of the month like Reese, hidden specifics like Watson, or just plane not anything I would ever like like SJP. I will admit to loving Oprah titles, but it was more hit and miss and not solid gold each time. 2mo
See All 8 Comments
MaggieCarr I like that they draw in readers who may not otherwise show interest. But can get on a soapbox about how I dislike their logos all over book covers. I think it really takes away from the timeless look of many. 2mo
EclecticReaders @SW-T this sums it up so well, thanks! 1mo
EclecticReaders @DGRachel Very true, and, hey, at least you know now her picks probably just aren‘t for you! 1mo
EclecticReaders @LibrarianRyan Good point. They all have their own “type” of book they usually go for. 1mo

We‘re talking all about genres on this month‘s #EclecticReaders #podcast episode! Do you like having genres and the countless sub-genres and classifications? Or do you think it‘s all just for marketing purposes? And what about genre-bending books? Do you think they‘re helped or hurt by our genre system? Tell us your thoughts below! #EclecticQuestion

LibrarianRyan I like big cats gory genres in general and am not a sub general fan, but in my job I use them frequently and are happy they exist. 3mo
LibrarianRyan I like to read gents bending books but they can be hard to recommend to readers you don‘t know as well. 3mo
SW-T Yes and no. It helps when shopping since if you know you want horror you can go straight to the horror section. But you have to know that store‘s system because the book you want might not be where you expect if it‘s a genre bender or sub genre book or considered a classic. Then it‘s somehow in literary fiction. And it can help or hurt marketing depending on how it‘s plugged. 3mo
EclecticReaders @LibrarianRyan @SW-T you both bring up some really great points! Thanks for sharing! 3mo

BookNAround I still have my tattered Scholastic copy of 4mo

Lexeegee From the mixed up files of Mrs Basil E Frankweiler. This was one of my all time favorites. 4mo
BillBlume I suppose it‘s cliché, but Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was a book I enjoyed as a kid, and I wasn‘t much of a reader in those days. I also loved the novelization of Return of the Jedi. Especially in a time when I couldn‘t simply throw in a DVD to watch it, I loved being able to relive that film through the book. 4mo

LibrarianRyan The Illuminae Files by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman are one of my favorites. I would love to see Jay pair up with a classic sci Fi writer like Mercedes Lackey or even a classic Mg s I fi writer like Susan Cooper 5mo
Kaye Stephen Naifeh and Gregory White Smith wrote a couple of nonfictions together ( true crime about Sam Sheppard) and a murder case from Texas. Let‘s team up Stephen King with Maeve Binchy ( if she were still alive ). I‘d like to see how THAT would turn out. 5mo
Areader2 Love historical fiction and one of my favorites is America‘s first Daughter by Stephanie Dray & Laura Kamoie ,on my tbr is My Dear Hamilton. The story captured you right away and even though there are two authors the writing is seamless, it had to take amazing amounts of research. 5mo
