Josephine Baker

Paris, 1925. Over the course of a single evening, the Mississippi-born dancer Josephine Baker (1906 1975) becomes the darling of the Roaring Twenties. Some audience members in the Theatre des Champs-Elysees are scandalized by the African American s performance in La Revue Negre, but the city s discerning cultural figures among them Picasso and Cocteau are enchanted by her exotic, bold, and uninhibited style. When her adopted country grants her citizenship in 1939, Baker sees her fame as a means of helping the French Resistance. She takes advantage of her globe-trotting lifestyle to pass on messages and gather information. A decade later, installed in a palatial 15th century chateau, she adopts 12 children from different ethnic backgrounds. Josephine Baker paints a glorious portrait of a spirited, principled, and thoroughly modern woman."

This is a delightful and fast-paced collection of moments in the incomparable Josephine Baker‘s life. Lots of cameos, so much so, there‘s about a hundred pages of short bios at the back of the book, along with a timeline.
It‘s a chunkster of a comic and I‘ve been looking forward to reading it since I bought it two years ago.

Interesting graphic biography about a fascinating woman who embraced life on her own terms. The illustrator captured her exuberance and passion perfectly. I would have liked more detail on her life from WWII on -- it was there, but there was more detail on her performances pre WWII. I found her work with the French Resistance and civil rights so compelling and wanted more.

Home sweet home with the weighted blanket and a giant graphic novel.

kgriffith The poor bookseller I told what I was browsing for after they asked if I wanted help finding anything... this was one of the two books they came up with, both of which you own 😋 6y
keggergoldy @GlitterFemme what was the other one I own? 🤓 6y
kgriffith @keggergoldy Now that I‘m thinking about it, it was one that *I* own, so it was just that you have access to it 🤓😘 6y
TommieMarie74 I really want a weighted blanket! I have quite a bit of anxiety and off and on insomnia (right now it‘s “on and on” insomnia 😑). I‘ve been told that weighted blankets can help with both. 6y
keggergoldy @TommieMarie74 they really help with a host of things. Yesterday, it was about clearing my head post travel-related sensory overload. 6y

Mehso-so

I really enjoyed the art, but it felt like it jumped around a lot. It was more like little 3-4 page vignettes. There's a time line and biographical information about the people in Josephine's life at the end. I should have read that first.

#TBRtemptation post 6! This thick graphic novel looks amazing! Baker was 19 in 1925 when she entered Paris. The young American dancer captivated the world, from Picasso to kings, becoming the world's first black celebrity. She was in WWII's French Resistance. In the '50s, she adopted 12 orphans, the Rainbow Tribe. In the '60s she spoke at the March on Washington. She would fight racism and evil her whole life. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Quite the disclaimer.

ScrappyMags Exactly! Books are meant to cause reactions which cause (gasp) discussions! 😲 7y

KathyWheeler So now we need warnings on our books? 7y

AliBG I think that it can be exhausting to be a POC in the West at any time period! My hunch is that label is meant to alleviate some of that exhaustion: if you're tired and triggered, this isn't the book for you right now. 7y
MatchlessMarie @AliBG Agree! Trigger warnings are helpful. 💛 7y

writerlibrarian This is the new trend bio graphic novel. I got this one and at least a dozen more since last fall for the library. If you like this one i recommend the Mama Cass one which is excellent. There is a James Brown too that is quite good. (edited) 7y
