⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ • This book is just the kind I love: a solid plot and even better character development. A commentary on the obscene injustices of our so-called justice system woven together with the complications that incarceration creates in relationships, this book grabbed me from page one and didn‘t let go.

⭐️⭐️⭐️½ • This one left me wanting more, but maybe that was the point? Not exactly satisfying, but I‘m glad I read it. It‘s been compared to Gone Girl, which I think is a stretch, but I think it could be made into an interesting movie.

⭐️⭐️⭐️½ • A raw and heartbreaking look at addiction and its impact on the user and everyone around them. Written from a father‘s perspective, this book humanizes addiction in a way I haven‘t experienced before.

Becoming | Michelle Obama

I love Michelle & everything she stands for. But I had a really hard time getting into this book so I listened to the audiobook. I personally don‘t quite understand the extreme hype around this autobiography. (That being said, I can‘t remember the last autobiography I read & maybe I just don‘t like them in general.) It felt safe & is too long. There definitely were nuggets that I found to be interesting & I only feel love for the Obama family.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: A lackluster follow up to Crazy Rich Asians but book candy nonetheless. Four stars for being a fun page-turner, not for literary greatness.

⭐️⭐️⭐️½: I really enjoyed this book. It explores the complications and joys of having a transgender young child well, I think. It was maybe a bit too wholesome for me and some of the word choice made me a little eye roll-y. But, over all a good read.

⭐️⭐️⭐️: I liked the format with the alternating between podcast script and Sadie, but I think this book is just ok. I definitely wouldn‘t call it YA...it‘s very dark and deals with tough themes.

⭐️⭐️½: I found this book hard to read and it took me a long time to get through. I don‘t really like the writing style. The plot had potential but fell flat for me.

⭐️⭐️⭐️½ • I started out loving this book but found my mind wandering as I kept reading, especially toward the end. The dual timeline thing is super interesting, but the stories are almost too similar. Because of this, the story was somewhat predictable. Also I think it could have been at least 50 pages shorter. But I‘m glad I read it and will read the sequel.

The Resident: 🆗

It will be interesting to see how FX will translate these to the screen. Some I can definitely see, others not so much.

When the subject matter is Ruth Bader Ginsburg, can a book even be bad?! She is a true legend and inspiration. This book isn‘t perfect, but RBG sure is. I display this book proudly next to my RBG action figure.

I knew what the end scene was going to be, but it was still so shocking and heartbreaking to read. What a powerful little book. My only criticism is that the boy read much younger than nine, which I found to be a bit distracting.

Educated: A Memoir | Tara Westover
post image
Panpan

While it has its moments, this book is not well-written. None of the many characters (real people!) are even close to fully developed and almost all of it reads as unrealistic. (I have lots of questions about how Tara got into BYU and managed to stay.) Plus, Tara writes herself as very selfish. It‘s been compared to The Glass Castle, which is insane. That book is in a completely different league. (But the cover art is great so yay marketing.)

Purrfectpages I‘m having a hard time getting into this one as well. 4mo

Three seemingly unrelated topics weave together surprisingly nicely in this short book: suicide, a dog, and literature. The writing is lovely and I cried like a baby (while holding my kitty tight) at one particular part.

The main plot is interesting so it had the potential to be good, but nope. Uninspired writing and forgettable characters, imho. (I acknowledge that I‘m not the target market for this book.)

I liked but didn‘t love. It felt like a bit of a chore to read, for me. I read it because a theatre in my city is going to produce the play version, which I‘m looking forward to seeing.

The story had so much potential, but I think the execution is all wrong. The obnoxiously long sentence structures are distracting. I didn‘t care about either of the main characters, at all.

EchoLogical I thought the sentences were super weird, too! I listened to the audio so I wasn't sure if it was just the narrator's pacing or the way it was written. 😵 11mo
