Gideon the Ninth: Act One
Gideon the Ninth: Act One: Free Ebook Preview | Tamsyn Muir
Can't wait to discover the power of lesbian necromancers in space? Check out this free ebook preview of Tamsyn Muir's Gideon the Ninth. Read the whole first act of this epic science fantasy for free. The full book of Gideon the Ninth is available for pre-order now, and on sale everywhere September 10, 2019. The Emperor needs necromancers. The Ninth Necromancer needs a swordswoman. Gideon has a sword, some dirty magazines, and no more time for undead bullshit. Tamsyn Muirs Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap off the page, as skillfully animated as necromantic skeletons. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse. She packs up her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and prepares to launch her daring escape. But her childhood nemesis wont set her free without a service. Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House and bone witch extraordinaire, has been summoned into action. The Emperor has invited the heirs to each of his loyal Houses to a deadly trial of wits and skill. If Harrowhark succeeds she will be become an immortal, all-powerful servant of the Resurrection, but no necromancer can ascend without their cavalier. Without Gideons sword, Harrow will fail, and the Ninth House will die. Of course, some things are better left dead. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

What a strange world we live in... Social media now decides what books go on sale (read: are worthy). That is not a slight on this book, which I've never read. Just an observation.

julesG Weird! 2w
ravenlee Isn‘t this just a variation on bestseller lists? It‘s just something very specific that‘s driving the popularity. 2w
ShyBookOwl @ravenlee Good point. Seems less jarring when you put it that way 2w
ravenlee Not to say it isn‘t weird, but I‘ve always found bestseller lists to be a strange thing. Highlighting and discounting books that are already popular, to make them more popular, based largely on existing publicity efforts and “word of mouth” - so booktok seems like a pretty logical progression to me. 2w
ShyBookOwl @ravenlee Agreed. Litsy is my only social media platform, and things like tiktok seem built upon the premise that ppl have no attention span, which seems counterintuitive to book culture. So there's a clash there that confuses me. When my 14 yr old nephew scrolls tiktok I get an instant migraine, so imagining his peers deciding which books get popular boggles me 😅 Maybe I'd get it if I participated 🤷🏽‍♀️ 2w

I wish there was an option that would do this more justice than 'pick'. Ibwas already excited for my reread, not even half-way through the book. I will race to the bookstore to go and get myself the second book of the series, and be devastated if they dont have it.

Sometimes I read a book and I‘m like, “Yeah, that was really good. I liked it a lot.”

Then I reread it and I‘m all, “WHAT IS THIS COOL, PERFECT BEAUTY WITH ITS GORGEOUS ATMOSPHERE AND SNARK AND GENERALIZED AWESOMENESS AND WHY DID I NOT LOVE IT WITH EVERYTHING IN ME THE FIRST TIME BECAUSE IT. IS. EXCELLENT.”

Yeah. This‘s some good shit.

Also, Gideon Nav is still my favourite Gideon of all the Gideons. #somanygideons

thereadingpal I must admit that I don't know if I like Gideon yet + as a person whose first language isn't English, I'm finding the writing a bit challenging. I don't know if it's the style or the language used, though. Maybe I should check if the library has a copy in Italian. 4mo
AbigailJaneBlog My dissertation is due next week so I haven't had a chance to read it yet, but I look forward to the next discussion!! 4mo
PuddleJumper I stuck with this because the writing style was bizarre. The first part of the book was too slow for me, I was more interested in the intrigue aspect than Gideon 4mo

Kenyazero I actually bailed on this book recently, so I‘m excited to see what everyone else likes about it. I didn‘t like any of the characters (Gideon‘s alright), but thought the writing style was interesting (a little clunky sometimes though). I feel like on top of disliking the characters, I just couldn‘t get into the world, AND it took so long for the actual plot to start… 😵‍💫 4mo

Nobody told me this amazing book was going to be a mystery first and foremost! I loved it, there was such a good dynamic between characters, the lore is sort of thrown at you, because Gideon as a character doesn't necessarily understand it, and it all flows so well. I could not stop reading this, and I am so glad I finally saw for myself what the well-earned hype was about. 100% recommend.

This dark, dense unique fantasy is a hard one to review. The writing is a blend of gothic horror with contemporary humor and well done. The tagline of lesbian necromancers in space is spot on. Harrow's backstory is compelling, And Gideon's narrative voice is perfectly delivered.

This failed to capture my attention by not introducing the main problem until 30% (over 5 hours) in. Until then, Gideon is just messing around while her necromancer is off doing secret stuff. At 71%, Disinterest has shifted into active dislike so it‘s time to throw in the towel. I feel like the world building has been weak, and what‘s up with Gideon being enslaved(ish), but reading comics often enough to compare to real life situations?? #LGBTQ?

PuddleJumper It's a very weird book 6mo
Clare-Dragonfly I feel like if you‘re not all in with Gideon by 10% or so, you probably aren‘t going to like this book! 6mo
Kenyazero @PuddleJumper I liked the weirdness, I just wasn‘t captivated 🫤 6mo
Kenyazero @Clare-Dragonfly I feel like that‘s fair! The start intrigued me enough, but it took so long to get to the main problem from that initial captivation that it lost me 😬 6mo

So far, this has taken entirely too long to get to the hook, the actual plot and problem. Gideon has just been wandering around aimlessly, doing random stuff while waiting for Harrow, without even knowing what Harrow is doing. We‘re only just getting a look at the intro of the problem 33% or 5 hours in!

Today's card is the Hierophant, which focuses on tradition, ceremony, and conformity. I chose Gideon the Ninth, because of the way Harrow is so held captive by the traditions of Ninth House and how Gideon is...well, not. 😁 Their back and forth in this story was so mesmerizing! ❤📖❤

PS - who else is REALLY EXCITED for the third book to come out this fall?! 😍

I really liked it! Gideon is such an engaging character, and once the pace picks up it doesn‘t stop. I‘m a baby about scary stuff, and I ended up making a point of not reading it at night, but more because of little jump scare moments than anything else. I was a little disappointed that so much of the ending was a surprise, but it makes sense that a book with sequels would introduce new elements. Can‘t wait for the next one!

Taking some time this afternoon to read Gideon while I try to avoid another headache. Things are starting to speed up, and I‘m at the point where I‘m hitting a bunch of rapidfire reveals (and internally yelling). I have some guesses about who is responsible for the murders, but still not sure how it will shake out. I‘m hoping for a satisfying resolution regardless.
Meanwhile, Dottie wishes I would stop being boring and take her for a walk.

Getting back into Litsy after a very extended leave because of pandemic stuff. Been having a hard time finishing books, but I‘m really enjoying Gideon. I waited a long time because I was worried it would be too scary/gory for me, but it is not too intense at all! It‘s a fun YA with a sassy narrator, a little slow at first but really enjoying the ride.

Also pictured is the pandemic pup we adopted this summer, Dottie. She is a spaz and we love her.

GondorGirl Dottie is beautiful! And Gideon is over of my favorite books! Fair warning, the second book is less "fun" and mentally darker. Still not scary, but a different feel from the first book. 9mo

Finally finished this one. I found it a little tough to wrap my head around at first but I'm eager to read the next in the trilogy now. Solid 4⭐️.

Crocodile on the Sandbank was a pleasant discovery for #Foodandlit22 but the end blew it big time. Overall a good listen 3⭐️.

Library hold on Death on the Nile is about to lapse so I'm hustling on that one.
Tempests and Slaughter I may DNF audiobook because I'm just not that into it, even at 63%.

Read-y_Picker @wideeyedreader I'm glad I stuck with Gideon! I had been wanting to read it for so long it was just so complicated to get into. Tempests and Slaughter is not working for me though. Maybe because I'm listening while I work, I just keep glazing over whole parts and it's not really sticking. #NYWD2022 @monalyisha 10mo

Gideon Nav, indentured servant of the Ninth House, can earn her freedom with one last task. Accompany Harrowhawk, heir of the Ninth, to a series of trials for immortality. What could possibly go wrong?

So much gothic-ish fun! & I‘ve learned 2 things. 1, I love squished together genres. This is, in parts, fantasy, sci-fi, and locked room murder mystery. 2, I am not a fan of enemies to lovers. At least, not over the course of a week. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

Ruthiella You know, I never saw their relationship as lovers. I think Muir gives enough room for another interpretation. I saw them more as siblings than finally stopped fighting and who realize their love and respect for each other . 🤔 I thought that Gideon‘s infatuation/love was for Dulcinea. (edited) 12mo
ozma.of.oz @Ruthiella I don‘t really think that‘s where they ended up, but it felt like that‘s where they were heading. You do make an excellent point though. I think my problem was more that I hated how quickly Gideon‘s change of heart was. Whether that be towards friendship, lovers, or familial, it just happened too fast under an intensely traumatic situation. But there‘s a sequel so I might get the longer, more in-depth apologies I feel like I needed. 12mo
