The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby | F Scott Fitzgerald
This unique edition of The Great Gatsby from Dead Dodo Vintage includes the full original text as well as exclusive features not available in other editions. The Great Gatsby is a 1925 novel written by American author F. Scott Fitzgerald that follows a cast of characters living in the fictional town of West Egg on prosperous Long Island in the summer of 1922. The story primarily concerns the young and mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby and his quixotic passion for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan. Considered to be Fitzgerald's magnum opus, The Great Gatsby explores themes of decadence, idealism, resistance to change, social upheaval, and excess, creating a portrait of the Jazz Age that has been described as a cautionary tale regarding the American Dream. Fitzgerald, inspired by the parties he had attended while visiting Long Island's north shore, began planning the novel in 1923 desiring to produce, in his words, "something new—something extraordinary and beautiful and simple and intricately patterned."  Progress was slow with Fitzgerald completing his first draft following a move to the French Riviera in 1924. His editor, Maxwell Perkins, felt the book was too vague and convinced the author to revise over the next winter. Fitzgerald was ambivalent about the book's title, at various times wishing to re-title the novel Trimalchio in West Egg.First published by Scribner's in April 1925, The Great Gatsby received mixed reviews and sold poorly; in its first year, the book only sold 20,000 copies. Fitzgerald died in 1940, believing himself to be a failure and his work forgotten. His work, spearheaded by The Great Gatsby, experienced a revival during World War II, and the novel became a part of American high school curricula in the following decades. The book has remained popular since, leading to numerous stage and film adaptations. The Great Gatsby is widely considered to be a literary classic and a contender for the title "Great American Novel". The book is consistently ranked among the greatest works of American literature.

Unabridged
The Great Gatsby | F. Scott Fitzgerald

This week, in our Bookworm Problems episode, we've been sharing bookish issues that plague us. One of mine (Jen's) is my recent tendency NOT to re-read. As an English teacher for 16 years, there were books that I read every year with my students. I had both a feeling of comfort and of discovery each time I re-read one of these texts, reveling in returning to my favorite parts and rejoicing when I found something new. (continued in comments)

Unabridged I found (no surprise) that the best books hold up to re-reading, offering hidden treasures that only familiarity could uncover. As I grew older, my own perspective changed--I read Gatsby differently in my 30s, after dozens of tours through the book, than I did as a teenager experiencing for the first time Gatsby's tragic fate and Nick's attempts to understand his friend.⠀ 19m
Unabridged After I left my English classroom, I didn't HAVE to re-read anymore, and so, largely, I haven't (except occasionally for the podcast!). At first, it was refreshing to be reading only new things, but three years in, I've begun to miss that cherished experience. So one of my goals for this summer is to choose a few favorites and to revel in re-reading once again.⠀ 19m

Went shopping with my best book buddy in Raleigh last week and got out of there WITH A SCORE! Everything was $1 😍 I added so many classics to my library, like Pinocchio, Alice in Wonderland, The Great Gatsby, etc.
What are some classics you‘re looking to add to your collection?

I‘ll be honest: Early in the book, I was planning on rating it “so-so.” I didn‘t feel like much was happening, and Nick seemed too passive a narrator. But then I hit the drama near the end, and I realized Fitzgerald had been establishing so many threads that, woven together, truly form a masterpiece. This book would definitely reward a second read, and I plan on giving it one soon!

This was ok. I listened to it on audible, so maybe I would have liked it better if I had read it. I just didn‘t connect with why the narrator thought so highly of Gatsby. It definitely paints a specific picture of 1920‘s life/mentality. Not sure if I‘ll read it again or not.

jenniferajanes I‘m not a fan of this book. I was an English major, so I‘ve read it a few times. Just not a fan. It‘s depressing. 2mo

I loved it! I was so prepared to not, I had taken a stab at classics before and found a mixed bag (ie: loved Pride and Prejudice but I detested Dracula). I also had read a lot of reviews, so many people made mention that at many points they couldn‘t figure out what Fitzgerald was trying to say. They also mentioned his wordiness, which I can support. He does tend to be a bit overly descriptive of small details.

When i looked once more for Gatsby he had vanished, and i was alone again in the unquiet darkness.

My favorite star crossed lovers of all time are Daisy and Jay. This is my favorite book as much as I hate to be a cliche. I love the foil that this serves for Fitzgerald‘s own relationship with Zelda and how it almost seems like he is saying with this book that he would not want to live without her. To be a little different, the adaptation “Great” by Sara Benincasa was also excellent and the love story was another one to fall in love with.

I somehow managed to go my entire life not knowing anything about this book (I knew there was a guy named Gatsby and a girl named Daisy and that it took place in the 20s. That‘s literally it). And I am so terribly glad I got to just sit and read and enjoy this book with fresh eyes. It‘s much sadder and darker than I expected it to be, that‘s for certain. And this novel rang truer for me than I expected it ever to. I‘m glad I read this when I did.
