Having a lovely time reading this, and the illustrations in this edition really bring it to life. I'm also enjoying the introduction and commentary by Carmen Maria Machado. I might have to read some of her work next!

Been meaning to read this for a long time. It was a really good and very quick read. Horror/vampire type story with love and sensual elements, once I started I couldn‘t stop reading

I love buying second hand books that people have written notes in, I‘m always interested in different perspectives of a story. Do you like this or does it annoy you?

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick If it's a classic or difficult text, I actually welcome the additional perspective. If it's a breezy read then anything other than highlighting a few quotes and maybe a few funny comments or thoughts feels like overkill. And never do it in a library book! 5mo
Nute I‘ve never been lucky enough to come across annotations made on the pages of the text. A couple times I have found dedications/notes from the book giver to the book receiver on the front inside cover or first page. I‘ve quite enjoyed those discoveries. 5mo

Enthralling sapphic vampire tale! I couldn't believe how queer coded it was for 1872, seriously. Loved it.

Found this short novella on @SerialReader while looking for #gothichorror #booked2020 - I enjoyed it! A lonely young woman is delighted when, after a carriage accident, a beautiful stranger is invited to stay & recuperate. But is she who she seems? Meanwhile a mysterious illness is killing off local villagers.

It may have felt a little predictable, but written 25 years before Dracula that probably says more about later novels. Worth a read!

BarbaraTheBibliophage I'm a vampire fan and this one reflects the time it was written perfectly! 14mo

Finishing up my #owlsreadathon2020 book for potions. I have really enjoyed this book. I'm actually not a huge Dracula fan so I wasn't really sure how I'd feel about Carmilla... I really like it! It's very short, so it doesn't drag like I feel Dracula does at times. And Carmilla is definitely a better vampire, IMO
#magicalreadathon2020

StellaDz I felt the same way!! Liked Carmilla so much more than Dracula. I have been thinking that I need to read Dracula again though since I read it 18 years ago 😳😮 #thanksgoodreads 2y

Written decades before Stoker‘s Dracula, I am as astounded as I was in reading Stoker at how modern the story feels. Equally surprising is the erotic nature of the tale and I wonder if reading it rather than listening to the narrators‘ breathless rendition would feel different. Dracula is better but this one is good too and puts a new light on Stoker‘s work. #tbrread

This book was published in 1872 and is said to be the book that later inspired Dracula, it was brought to my attention by a fellow book dragon Salema and I couldn't wait to read it.

This was a great audio book. It would have been a good read, but the stellar voice cast really brought it to life (or death). This audio version definitely did the original vampire novel justice.

Velvetfur Oohh I'm sure I read that at some point in my youth, but it sounds like it would be fab as an audiobook - good to hear that from you! 😊 2y

I can‘t with this Audible freebie. I picked it because David Tennant, but I‘m not into erotica. I know others may love it. It‘s just not my thang.

Laughterhp I looked up this book just because your post said David Tennant! 😂 Unfortunately he doesn‘t read the library version. Only reason I would give this book a try! 2y
Soubhiville Huh. I just started the library version today. I‘m about halfway through and it doesn‘t seem like erotica yet... narrated by Megan Follows. Maybe it‘ll get kinky soon? Lol, I was interested for the vampire. 2y
Laura317 @Laughterhp if you don‘t have Audible, I can send it to you to try. @Soubhiville I wanted David Tennant and a good vampire story. 2y

I loved that this had a female vampire, Carmilla. It was written in 1872 and predates Dracula. Thanks to all the Littens that posted about this one.

I listened to the audio version, which is a free choice this month on audible. Great recording!

An excellent production of a so-so novella that predates Dracula. I am giving this a borderline pick as I enjoyed the plot and a lot of the gothic feel but not as much the melodramatic writing. A nice quick listen though! #horror #Scarathlon #TeamStoker 3 points!
