The Passengers
The Passengers: A near-future thriller with a killer twist from the bestselling author of THE ONE | John Marrs
56 posts | 57 read | 78 to read
Eight self-drive cars set on a collision course. Who lives, who dies? You decide. 'Provocative, terrifying and compulsive. Another savagely clever near future thriller' Cara Hunter, bestselling author of CLOSE TO HOME The new gripping page-turning thriller for fans of BLACK MIRROR from the bestselling author of HER LAST MOVE and THE ONE - soon to be a major Netflix series. When someone hacks into the systems of eight self-drive cars, their passengers are set on a fatal collision course. The passengers are: a TV star, a pregnant young woman, a disabled war hero, an abused wife fleeing her husband, an illegal immigrant, a husband and wife - and parents of two - who are travelling in separate vehicles and a suicidal man. Now the public have to judge who should survive but are the passengers all that they first seem? ________________________________ WHAT READERS ARE SAYING 'I was gripped right from the start - the plot had many twists and turns' - Melanie 'An absorbing, engaging read that grabs you and doesn't let go, keeping you awake long past your bedtime' - Gisele 'One of the most thrilling books I've read this year' - Luke 'Marrs is so talented at creating these future worlds that are completely plausible and therefore utterly terrifying' - Kate 'Has many twists and turns which keep you guessing to the very last page' - Greta 'My heart is still pounding just thinking about this brilliantly twisted novel. An edge of your seat read' - Sara

I‘ll say no more because it‘s a #lmpbc book, but if you want an edge-of-your-seat techno-thriller, look no further. Marrs has a gift.

4 🤯🤯🤯🤯 This novel gave me nightmares. Not bad scary, good scary. There's quite a few triggers in this one. But the thrill ride was awesome. I enjoyed reading and making notes in this one. 5/5 stars! I was enthralled with this book within the first chapter! Nice short chapters and I cared about the characters so much that sometimes I was seriously mad at the book! I had to take a half day break half way threw the book though because I feel like it was a very heavy read. I cried multiple times during this book. There are spoilers for his book The One in this book. So make sure to read The One first!

Liatrek Oh wow I loved The One and can‘t wait to read this one. Also highly recommend 10mo

The Passengers is a fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat techno-thriller set in the near future where autonomous vehicles are mandatory on British roads. The government claims that these vehicles are the safest possible option and cannot be hacked, but since this is a thriller, that is obviously not the case. I think some of the intensity fizzled out towards the end and I was left with a couple unanswered questions, but overall, I really enjoy it! 4⭐️

"When people are part of a mob, they stop being individuals, their inhibitions disappear, they don't follow their normal moral compass..."
This book raises interesting topics, such
as: the harm and benefits of modern technologies, the behavior of people in a crowd, the impact of social networks on people's lives. But most of all, it's a Thriller! The suspense of the story increases with each page! ??

Book Woman- 4⭐️ great historical fiction about the blue people of KY and pack horse librarians.

The passengers by John Marrs was an awesome read. It's about these smart cars that get hijacked and our told that they will all be dead within 2 hours. I loved reading about the different characters and the secrets they held. I loved reading about the choices people have to make on deciding who lives and who should die. What a fun read.

I joined a book club and am insecure about my ability to analyze fiction, so before I try to do it on the book club pick, I'm practicing on my current read, The Passengers. My method is to summarize each chapter as I go along on my tablet. I'll also make any additional notes. It takes a lot of time to do this, but I think I'll retain much more of the text this way. By the way, I'm enjoying this book. It's an easy read, just what I need now!

The Passengers was an interesting insight into the future of technology and A.I. In placing so much of our freedom in the hands of A.I. and technology, are we giving up more than we realize? I love that the story is told from multiple perspectives making this one of the most fast-paced books I've ever read. It was simultaneously action packed and thought provoking.

The Passengers was excellent. It showed some disgusting sides of humanity. Marrs seems to specialize in psychopaths. But definitely thrilling read. Some of my initial guesses proved to be correct in the end. I misread a couple of circumstances. The editing could have been better. There were a few spelling errors, grammatical errors and inconsistencies that should have been caught by a decent editor which irks me.

Ok, after finishing this, I am fairly sure that I will love any book my #NewYearWhoDis partner recommends. This book had so many twists and lies that it seemed no one was who they said and who knew what secret was next! And just when I thought it was all over and we knew who lived and died, turns out that was just the end of part one! 💙

After reading The One by the same author, and then seeing @Lel2403 ‘s review of this book, I was compelled to buy it. I love a good futuristic thriller where artificial intelligence turns on its creators, and this story didn‘t disappoint. But the most frightening thing about this book is the thought that it could really happen..... 😱 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Lel2403 I agree, the thought of driverless cars in control is a thing of nightmares. And Thankyou 💕 2y

Whoa! So I was thinking my "self-imposed book buying ban" has been for about a month. Apparently I started it 3 months ago! My TBR shelves are still overflowing but I'm down a few. I did also get a couple of ARCs and HAD ? to buy only 3 books (2 sequels and one pre-order) . This is my first "unnecessary" purchase but it only cost me $12 so I'm still feeling good! #forthegrandkids

I know that @notesonbookmarks really liked THE PASSENGERS. I read about 40 pages of it, but it was due back at the library last month, and I wasn‘t invested enough to frantically finish it. And then I kind of forgot about it.

Should I re-request it and give it another go...?

RainyDayReading I was in a similar situation. But I got a little further in than you at first (I was getting ready to go to the library to take it back and thought oh let me just see what this was about) and had to know what was going on so I wound up finishing it in one sitting the day it was due back 😅 I enjoyed it, so I would say give it another try. You never know you might like it better the second time around. 2y

I listened to this on Audible after hearing about it on the podcast Currently Reading, and it was soooo good! It has a full cast and takes place in the future, in Britain, where driverless cars are made mandatory. A hacker hijacks 8 cars and says that in 2 and a half hours each will be dead. The hacker then live streams each passenger's journey, and forces a jury to pick one passenger to save. This was a great one to listen to while working out!

I was only supposed to be picking up my son's library holds as I had just procured a stack of classics I was eager to crack open. But the Black Mirror-ness of this one grabbed me. Story is interesting but character development needs work. Worth it if you want a freaky-tech page turner, but pass if you're in it to get lost in the story. I'd love recs for something like this with a little more substance please and thanks!

The concept of driverless or automated vehicles does not seem so far away.... So 'Passengers' is a deeply concerning look at what happens when political grandstanding starts to take the place of the common good.... With a group of self driving cars held hostage, how do we decide who is worth saving and who to let die? Suspenseful, well crafted and, scarily, not too far from the realms of possibility... Great stuff!
