What Lies Between Us
What Lies Between Us | John Marrs
34 posts | 45 read | 44 to read
Nina can never forgive Maggie for what she did. And she can never let her leave. They say every house has its secrets, and the house that Maggie and Nina have shared for so long is no different. Except that these secrets are not buried in the past. Every other night, Maggie and Nina have dinner together. When they are finished, Nina helps Maggie back to her room in the attic, and into the heavy chain that keeps her there. Because Maggie has done things to Nina that can't ever be forgiven, and now she is paying the price. But there are many things about the past that Nina doesn't know, and Maggie is going to keep it that way--even if it kills her. Because in this house, the truth is more dangerous than lies.

Very well written but extremely disturbing. I‘m between a pick and a so so here because of that. The ending should have come a couple of chapters earlier for me. Leaving us in limbo would have been a better finale I feel.

Well, I‘m stoked I was almost finished with this when the election disaster happened, because it‘s completely banana pants and batshit crazy. I definitely needed the escape! @5feet.of.fury you were right, absolutely bonkers 😳🫢😂

5feet.of.fury The mom in the flashbacks/past was driving me nuts! But once Nina started showing up at “Dylan‘s” & all that 😬😬😬😬 it all got so crazy. 1mo
CBee @5feet.of.fury hahaha yep, agree 100% 1mo

I had to read this quick because the trauma was ALOT. Unlike many reviewers I had little to no sympathy for Maggie… I was glad when Nina took her rage elsewhere because it somewhat balanced the story.

I was so eager to see how the backstory unfolded & Marrs did a masterful job writing both the women

CBee I just posted the first page quote from this book 😂 Am starting it now. 1mo
5feet.of.fury @CBee it‘s bonkers! Enjoy! 1mo

This is not my favorite book by Marrs, but it was still a great thriller. The dysfunctional family in this book was an extra special brand of crazy. I like how Marrs is able to make you feel for characters even when you dislike them and their actions.

I read this book in one day. John Marrs again knows how to keep you wanting to read on. This is the story of a mother and a daughter living together, one the prisoner of the other (no spoiler), both are seemingly very unreliable narrators. I saw many twists coming, yet it didn‘t keep me from racing through to find out what happened.

LeahBergen I just bought this yesterday! 3mo

Holy moly… what a crazy, twisted roller coaster right up until the very last page! Just when I thought I had things figured out… bam… a twist would come out of nowhere! Make sure you buckle up if you are going to read this one!

It‘s giving chaotic, psychotic, neurotic, traumatic, and even a touch of necrotic. The only phrase you need for this book is WTF. I imagine this one will stick with me for some time.

Can someone explain me - if It is a fact that the father of Nina was a child molester? I can not stop thinking that the father was another victim of Nina

Its_Amanda_Plz If I‘m interpreting what I read correctly, he was not a child molester. Maggie, the mom, thought that was what he was doing. Towards the end of the book, Nina has a brief flashback of him talking to another woman and he comes to her room and tells her that he‘s going to leave mom. Nina is upset that he‘s going to destroy the family and that‘s when she kills him. Maggie does not know about this side. 11mo

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

This one is pretty dark and has a Whatever happened to baby Jane vibe going on but instead of sisters it‘s a mother and daughter dynamic. Nina chains her mom to the attic upstairs out of vengeance but why?

I have to say this was a great page turner trying to figure out how these two women ended up in the situation they seem in which is dysfunction to the extreme!

🎧 📚 This was such a dark psychological thriller!

We open up with a daughter living at her mother‘s house. She‘s locked and chained her mom up in the attic & the story takes off from there.

Why is she locked up! What could make a daughter do such a thing?

It‘s dark but good. You are faced with 2 points of view and different time lines telling the story. Is either one of them or both an unreliable narrator?

Read it & find out! 😁

One of my new favorite authors. I‘m determined to read his entire catalog. His thrillers are filled with hidden twists and turns and are fairly creepy. Perfect for me!!

They say every house has its secrets, and the house that Maggie and Nina have shared for so long is no different.

I was totally into this book until…
Until she had her son and his family didn‘t suspect her to the point of turning this into the happy ending I wanted.

2nd book read

I am really not having any luck with books lately. This started off with some potential, but the ending was so misinformed in such a classicly inaccurate portrayal of a specific issue that it made me angry.

My review, WTF was that? Dark, twisted, deeply disturbing and not at all predictable. Every second day, Nina and Maggie eat dinner together. Then Nina takes Maggie back to the attic, where she switches out her long chain and shackle for a shorter one. Nina feels the need to punish Maggie for what she has done. But there are things Nina doesn‘t know. This one gets all the stars!!

This is my second John Marrs book and he is officially on my auto buy list. This book was probably the most dark and twisty mother daughter relationship I've ever read. I am still processing all the dark revelations and outcomes in this book. This was on my kindle so one down many more to go :-)

Thanks to #netgalley for the ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review. I was captivated from the first chapter. It was such a great read. So twisty and suspenseful and just when you think there cannot be another twist coming you get slammed with another one. It was one of those books I couldn't put down and when I finished it I was left thinking wtf did I just read?! In the best of ways of course! Such a deliciously dark read. #johnmarrs

This is a mother and daughter story unlike anything I have read or could even imagine. Nina keeps her mother, Maggie, locked away in the attic. Maggie has done things that Nina can never forgive her for. Alternating POVs from mother and daughter from the past and the present. So many secrets and wtf moments. Well written and compulsively readable. Family dysfunction at the highest level. This one is available on Kindle Unlimited.

Wow! I don‘t even know what I just read! This book is a total mind-f**k about a horribly screwed us relationship between a mother and daughter. I couldn‘t stop reading it! You just have to see what‘s going to happen next and how (or if) they get out of the toxicity.

This book took me for a rollercoaster ride. You have a mother Maggie and daughter Nina who live together in a house full of lies and deceit. But who is telling the lies and who is deceiving who? These characters had me going back and forth as to who is really the bad guy here. The book is written back and forth from years before and present day to tell you the full story. My second book I have read from John Marrs and he does not disappoint!!!

My first experience with this author- and it certainly won‘t be my last! This fast-paced domestic thriller tells a very twisted tale of a mother and daughter- and the horrible ways they have damaged each other. The plot seems to take some familiar turns- but watch out for some of those turns to be completely turned upside down! Darkly addictive, I couldn‘t put this down, despite not ever rooting for Nina or Maggie! Impressively done!
