Love Is a Mix Tape
Love Is a Mix Tape: Life, Loss, and What I Listened To | Rob Sheffield
What Is love? Great minds have been grappling with this question throughout the ages, and in the modern era, they have come up with many different answers. According to Western philosopher Pat Benatar, love is a battlefield. Her paisan Frank Sinatra would add the corollary that love is a tender trap. Love hurts. Love stinks. Love bites, love bleeds, love is the drug. The troubadours of our times agree: They want to know what love is, and they want you to show them. But the answer is simple: Love is a mix tape.In the 1990s, when alternative was suddenly mainstream, bands like Pearl Jam and Pavement, Nirvana and R.E.M.bands that a year before would have been too weird for MTV- were MTV. It was the decade of Kurt Cobain and Shania Twain and Taylor Dayne, a time that ended all too soon. The boundaries of American culture were exploding, and music was leading the way. It was also when a shy music geek named Rob Sheffield met a hell-raising Appalachian punk-rock girl named Rene, who was way too cool for him but fell in love with him anyway. He was tall. She was short. He was shy. She was a social butterfly. She was the only one who laughed at his jokes when they were so bad, and they were always bad. They had nothing in common except that they both loved music. Music brought them together and kept them together. And it was music that would help Rob through a sudden, unfathomable loss.In Love Is a Mix Tape, Rob, now a writer for Rolling Stone, uses the songs on fifteen mix tapes to tell the story of his brief time with Rene. From Elvis to Missy Elliott, the Rolling Stones to Yo La Tengo, the songs on these tapes make up the soundtrack to their lives. Rob Sheffield isnt a musician, hes a writer, and Love Is a Mix Tape isnt a love song- but it might as well be. This is Robs tribute to music, to the decade that shaped him, but most of all to one unforgettable woman. From the Hardcover edition.

This book is great...a little sad but it mentions the Replacements (the greatest band that never was) so it gets 5 stars

It seems like this memoir must have been a good example of modern love in the author's exploration of how love and music in the 90's figured into events in his life. But now that there are probably a decent amount of people who don't know what a 'mixtape' is, maybe not so much any more? 😋🎶👴🎵
@rohit-sawant @Cinfhen

Cinfhen So I REALLY wanted to love this memoir but I wasn‘t a fan of the author‘s. His storytelling was super flat for me. I ended up bailing 😢 7mo
Billypar @Cinfhen Ah, how disappointing: being set in the 90s and about music and love does set expectations up a notch. 7mo

Congrats @DivaDiane on all these 2s!! And thank you for the #2x2Giveaway.

One of my most favorite books having to do with music is the tagged book. It‘s basically a love story between a man (the author), a girl and the music that brought them together.

DivaDiane Sounds great! Thanks for entering! 1y

Between and pick and a so-so. I liked the sections on grief, particularly that Rob‘s world got smaller and harder as time went on, a nice antithesis to what we‘re normally fed about “time heeling all wounds.” Still, the author‘s second fiddle puppy dog routine made the book drag for me.

I like the chapter styling of this one. A memoir told through coming of age mix tapes. The author is a little woe-is-me-hopelessly-awkward-rock-of-ages-fanboy for my liking but it‘s true to himself so I guess it isn‘t his fault his life became a Hollywood trope.

1. The tagged book was a lot of fun for fans of 80s music.
2. Duran Duran ❤️😀
3. U2 at Madison Square Garden about 3 weeks after 9/11. The place was filled with first responders and the city was still on edge and sad and the band came out to Elevation with the house lights still on and rocked the place for 2 hours. During One they scrolled the names of victims on the walls and ceiling. It was the most moving show I've ever been to. (Cont)

Jerdencon And I've been to many shows. It was unbelievable. 4. So many.... right now, Closer by the Chainsmokers #manicmonday @JoScho (edited) 2y
JoScho This book sounds fun! 2y
LauraBeth I lived in NYC during that time and saw U2 at MSG on one of the three nights they played there after 9/11. Agree with you - I have seen hundreds of concerts - I‘ve never been as moved as that one. That show gave us life during such a sad time. 2y
Jerdencon @LauraBeth I totally agree... 2y

My 1994 Pontiac Bonneville has a tape deck, and I plan on driving with a tape popped in for Renee Sheffield this winter. Rob Sheffield‘s memoir of his late wife, lost after only 5 years of marriage, is of course, a heartbreaker of a book. But Love is a Mix Tape is also full of wisdom (though the author might disagree), kindness, laughs, epic love, and lots of great tunes.

I need more reading music! Anyone have a playlist (Spotify, iTunes, etc.) to share, or particular artists/albums/songs to recommend? I‘m mostly looking for instrumental/lyrics-less music (as that usually suits me best while reading), but I‘m open to anything that you feel enhances your 📚time!

LauraBeth I've been listening to the instrumental of the new Beauty and the Beast soundtrack while reading and have really enjoyed it! I've also made an Apple Music playlist of all the songs that have been featured on Big Little Lies so far (although it's not instrumental and would be happy to share that if you're interested) 😀 3y

This is somewhat a hard book to read. It deals with grief, how you move on after the person you love has died without warning.

It's a male point of view. A different approach on how one's deals with its grief. All methods of grieving are valid in my book. Rob Sheffield wrote an emotional love letter to his wife Renée in the form of music. He is a man of the 90s so mix tapes of music were the way Renée and him spoke to and loved each other.

Cinfhen Nice review, I wasn't expecting a sad memoir ☹️ 3y

You guys!! I am speechless at the thoughtfulness and generosity of @LitHousewife She made me a mix tape 😁👏🏻👏🏻 Needless to say I can't wait to read these books and listen to her killer playlist!

LitHousewife I'm so glad you love it!!! I had so much fun making it. ❤❤❤ 3y
BooksForEmpathy OMG. What a fabulous idea. I wouldn't know where to find a way to listen to the mix tape - but High Fidelity is one of my favorite books (and the movie is f*cking fantastic excuse my language!) and the personalized playlist is perfect. @LitHousewife I want to know what was on it 😍. Can you send out a slack message with it!? The idea just rocks. 3y
LitHousewife @BooksForEmpathy I would definitely be happy to share the playlist. After I picked up Love is a Mix Tape I said to my husband, "I really just want to make her a mix tape!" He still had the equipment to make it. The funny thing is we had no real way to listen to it. LOL!!! @Blair_Reads 3y

It‘s the same with people who say, ‘Whatever doesn‘t kill you makes you stronger.‘ Even people who say this must realize that the exact opposite is true. What doesn‘t kill you maims you, cripples you, leaves you weak, makes you whiny and full of yourself at the same time. The more pain, the more pompous you get. Whatever doesn‘t kill you makes you incredibly annoying.

RiotMom Oh god. This book made me sob so hard. 3y
Beetle Such a good one! 3y

The '90s-tastic sheet music should give you an idea of the last time I played piano... Can't wait to read this book by Rob Sheffield! #booksandmusic #augustphotochallenge

#booksandmusic - I live in a small house with a vibrant family, out in a noisy rural area in North Carolina. Tuning out noise is a must sometimes, so I play instrumental music 🎧 Here are favorite bands with non-lyric albums that I love:

Explosions in the Sky, top left
All The Bright Lights, top right
Bethel Music, bottom left
el ten eleven, bottom right

👉🏻What do you listen to when you read? Any recs?

#augustphotochallenge #augustofpages

LauraBrook I grew up listening to and playing classical music, and I adore finding bands/albums that have non-lyrical music. It's harder than you'd think! Thank you so much for these recs, I'll be investigating them all ASAP! 💚🎻🎼 3y
AmyG I loved this book so much. I don't usually listen to music when I read but William Tyler is nice. Guitar instrumental music. 3y
Zelma I'm not familiar with the music but I absolutely love this book! Rob Sheffield is brilliant and listening to the audio of Love is a Mixtape was really special and heartbreaking. 3y
Eyelit Love Explosions in the Sky, need to check out the others! 😄 3y

I read this several years ago and loved it - the way he writes about music and how my own experience with these songs came back to me as I read the book. So excited to read the one on the right - just picked it up from the library.
