Turn Around Bright Eyes: A Karaoke Journey of Starting Over, Falling in Love, and Finding Your Voice
Turn Around Bright Eyes: A Karaoke Journey of Starting Over, Falling in Love, and Finding Your Voice | Rob Sheffield
5 posts | 12 read | 14 to read
Once upon a time I was falling apart. Now I'm always falling in love. When Rob Sheffield moved to New York City in 2001, he was a young widower trying to start a new life in a new town. One night, some friends dragged him to a karaoke bar and that night turned into many nights in many karaoke bars. Karaoke became a way to be someone else if only for the span of a three-minute song, and through the sublime ridiculousness of karaoke, Rob began to find his voice. And then the unexpected happened. A voice on the radio got Rob's attention. And the voice came attached to a woman who could name every constellation in the sky, every Depeche Mode B side, and could belt out a mean Bonnie Tyler. Turn Around Bright Eyes is a journey of hilarity and heartbreak with a karaoke soundtrack. It's about finding the courage to move on, clearing your throat, and letting it rip and how songs get tangled up in our deepest emotions."

Rob Sheffield writes about being a young widower & moving to NYC back in 2001.As a true music fan & Rolling Stone writer, he used to mock the idea of Karaoke. After being forced to go by a bunch of friends,he may find Karaoke to be not only fun but also a metaphor about all aspects of life.I like the way his mind works , he writes passionately about things like the favorite songs of his youth, how experiences can open you up to new love & new life.

I so loved “Love Is A Mixtape” I bought this soon after I finished that one. Thanks to @CoffeeNBooks reminding me of her #weekendreading I dug it out of the back layer of my bookcase.Way overdue to read this one.

CoffeeNBooks I have that one also, but haven't read it yet. I love his writing! 2y

Mehso-so

Not really what I was expecting -- kind of scattered & all over the place. Did it on audio & wish I hadn't. Read by the author, but his monotone kind of made it fall flat. No other comments or reviews on Litsy. Anyone else read this?

LauraBrook I read another of his books and liked it, so I picked up this one as an ebook a few months ago. Have thought about starting it a few times, but I feel kinda "meh" about it already. 8y
LitHousewife My husband was friends with his first wife. I found that out while reading his first book. I've not heard great things about this, so I've never bothered to pick it up. Sounds like I should continue with just loving his first book. 8y
Coleen Which one did you read @LauraBrook ? I read the Duran Duran one a few years ago & have Love is a Mix Tape on ebook. Not sure if I'll read that one or not. 8y

Coleen Really, @LitHousewife ?? That's cool! (Cool that he knew her, not that she died.) So maybe I WILL have to read that one. 8y
LitHousewife @Coleen Here is my review, which includes background into how my husband and I met and how Danny and Renee knew each other. Reading that book was fun! http://literatehousewife.com/2008/05/68-love-is-a-mix-tape/ 8y
Coleen @LitHousewife Such a small world sometimes. Fascinating to read that -- thank you. Sounds like that was probably his best book, so yes, I need to read it. And then I can say I knew the person who was married to the person who got Rob & Renee together. 😜 8y
