The Lord of the Rings
The Lord of the Rings: One Volume | J.R.R. Tolkien
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind themIn ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and Sauron, the Dark Lord, forged the One Ring, filling it with his own power so that he could rule all others. But the One Ring was taken from him, and though he sought it throughout Middle-earth, it remained lost to him. After many ages it fell by chance into the hands of the hobbit Bilbo Baggins. From Sauron's fastness in the Dark Tower of Mordor, his power spread far and wide. Sauron gathered all the Great Rings to him, but always he searched for the One Ring that would complete his dominion. When Bilbo reached his eleventy-first birthday he disappeared, bequeathing to his young cousin Frodo the Ruling Ring and a perilous quest: to journey across Middle-earth, deep into the shadow of the Dark Lord, and destroy the Ring by casting it into the Cracks of Doom. The Lord of the Rings tells of the great quest undertaken by Frodo and the Fellowship of the Ring: Gandalf the Wizard; the hobbits Merry, Pippin, and Sam; Gimli the Dwarf; Legolas the Elf; Boromir of Gondor; and a tall, mysterious stranger called Strider. This new edition includes the fiftieth-anniversary fully corrected text setting and, for the first time, an extensive new index.J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973), beloved throughout the world as the creator of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion, was a professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford, a fellow of Pembroke College, and a fellow of Merton College until his retirement in 1959. His chief interest was the linguistic aspects of the early English written tradition, but while he studied classic works of the past, he was creating a set of his own.

The Lord of the Rings, reread after 10 years. Savored this book over the month of January and didn‘t want it to end. It was a much more emotional read for me this time, all around.

My “big book” for 2023 with my mom is Tolkien‘s trilogy, which I‘ve never read. I loved The Hobbit, which we read together a few years ago. It‘s such a cultural touchstone and I‘m late, but finally coming to the party, by way of this decrepit set my library gave away.

RamsFan1963 I love this edition of The Fellowship of the Ring. It is the one a found in my high school library, I didn't know who Tolkien was, I didn't know it was a trilogy (or that they didn't have the other two books 😖), but the cover really caught my eye. 4w
Michael_Gee @RamsFan1963 Aw, nice! The library had all three still in the cardboard sleeve, so I‘m going to be spending the year with all of them. The covers are all beautiful. 4w
Reggie I read these after the movies and they are real close. I enjoyed them. Although I kinda think they should have turned that last movie into 2 movies and I think you‘ll see why. 4w

23rd Dec #WinterReadathon #WinterReadathonDailyChallenge

Today it‘s National Christmas Movie Marathon Day. So for today‘s Daily Challenge post any combination of your Favourite Christmas Movie, your favourite book to movie or the book(s) that should be made into movies.

For me it still takes a lot to beat It‘s A Wonderful Life 😢😭, loved the Lord of the Rings Films, and think the Ben Hope Series by Scott Mariani would be great films.

MaGoose @Andrew65 Absolutely. I like George C. Scott as Scrooge, but the rest of the cast sucks in that version. 1mo

1. Paperback; hardbacks are nice but I find paperbacks easier to carry about
2. LotR
3. Physical copies (although kindle still = a real book!)
4. Ideally buy because I love owning books but my bank account thanks libraries
5. In bed - lush!!
6. Hmm tricky; both have pros and cons for me!
7. See my answer for 4
8. Fiction
9. Print! Can't for the life of me follow along w an audio book
10. Either!

#thisorthat I love these!

1. Hardback is more romantic but my disability makes them very hard to read so I guess paper if I‘m being practical :/
2. Tolkien 1000% forever
3. Both all at once! All are real books!
4. Tbh buy because I‘m so impulsive Library wait times never work for me
5. Both but chair in coffee shop is elite
6. Both!
7. Both! But tbh bookstore more
8. Hmm both but fiction has my heart
9. Both all on the same day.

Emilymdxn 10. New copies of old books? Love both tho. @indiaro and @moll you wanna join in? 4mo

We're on a short break to North Yorkshire, and staying in the shadow of Ingleborough, a hill which puts me in mind of Weathertop from the Lord of the Rings movies.
Co-incidentally, the person who stayed here before us has left their A****n account active, so (🤫 don't tell Jeff) I've just binged The Rings of Power! Once I stopped trying to align it with the actual history of Middle-earth, I began to enjoy it as pastiche rather than adaptation.

Graywacke Cool pictures! (I enjoyed those movies the 1st around. Can‘t stand them long now, though.) 4mo
Bookwomble @Graywacke Thanks ? I still love the three LotR movies, had to force myself to watch The Hobbit movies and haven't rewatched since (despite having them on DVD), and having adjusted my expectations for TRoP, found myself liking it despite my inner critic repeating, "That's wrong, that's wrong, that's wrong..." ? Despite the slating, I'm loving the Harfoot halflings ???? 4mo
Johanna414 I've been watching it with the mentality that it's fanfiction, and thoroughly enjoying it that way! 4mo
See All 11 Comments
vivastory I'm thoroughlyly enjoying it. The only Tolkien I have read is LoTr & the Hobbit & TRoP to me feels like a loose adaptation of the appendices for the works prior. From what I gather the Tolkien estate still retains rights to Silmarillion & I recall when the show was first being discussed that the estate was going to have total veto power (IMO a horrible idea). I don't know if this changed anything or not in the final direction of the show... 4mo
vivastory And I'm with you on the Harfoots! 👏 👏 4mo
Ann_Reads I didn't care for The Hobbit movies either, though I liked the LOTR movies (and still do). The first episode of TRoP was difficult to get through and I almost gave up on it. The second episode was better. Khazad-dûm was actually lovely during this time of relative peace.

Enjoy your short getaway. 🙂
4mo
jitteryjane724 How lovely! There is a wonderful freedom in being able to enjoy things as well. 4mo
Bookwomble @Johanna414 Yes, exactly! 😊 4mo
Bookwomble @vivastory I listened to an interview with Ann Cleeves, author of the Vera Stanhope detective series, who when asked if she retained control over the TV adaptations said, "Oh, no! I don't know anything about writing for television." I understand the estates trepidation, but adapting The Silmarillion as published would be more like a historical documentary. JRR's grandson & member of the estate, Simon Tolkien, is named as an advisor to the series. 4mo
Bookwomble @Ann_Reads The foreshadowing of the uncovering of the Balrog was a good bit 🙂 4mo
Bookwomble @jitteryjane724 Agreed. If I didn't like it, is say so and pass on. I'm not sure why people waste energy in constantly attacking something they don't like 🤷🏻‍♂️ 4mo

Feeling exhausted after my first week back at school and my coivd booster yesterday. On the bright side, I finally don‘t have a migraine, so I can maybe pick up my library holds today and walk the dog. Starting slow with the Fellowship audiobook and some Stardew Valley. I‘ve just made it to Bree and I‘m really enjoying the hobbit antics, especially all of his friends being on to Frodo‘s plan because of his sadboy comments everywhere they went 😂

One of my favourite parts about spending ~608 minutes in a movie theatre to watch a trilogy that I‘ve seen multiple times is knowing that we were all repressing the urge to whisper to the person next to us “you know he broke some toes when he kicked that helmet?” & instead just settled on laughing simultaneously at what was meant to be a moment of anguish when Aragon thinks Merry & Pippin are dead.

♥️ that for us. Keeping it normal since 2002.

julesG That's a titbit I didn't know. I only saw/heard about the broken front tooth. 6mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @julesG, interestingly I didn‘t know about that one 😂 but yes, it‘s even the take that‘s used in the film… feel free to mention it to the person next to you, if you find yourself watching the two towers at some point in the future 6mo
