I was unquestionably charmed by this book, but I got annoyed by Cassandra‘s melodrama near the end. I think I would have absolutely adored this book as a teenager when everything had *meaning* and was full of *possibility* and you thought nonstop about your first kiss. As it was, the love triangles pushed this a little off the rails for me, but the other plot points kept me very interested and entertained. So glad I finally read this gem!

Current reads: listening to H. Jon Benjamin‘s memoir (didn‘t know he wrote one until I found it while browsing Libby last night!) while I finish stitching this belated Christmas present for my grandma. Finally, finally, finally starting I Capture the Castle after many, many years on my TBR! #audiostitching #crossstitch

This book has been on my tbr shelf for probably 20 years and my reading radar for way longer than that. It is the charming, delightful story of 17-year-old Cassandra who lives in a crumbling castle with her eccentric father, stepmother, older sister and younger brother. Their lives change when the American grandsons of the castle‘s owner arrive. Loved it.

Why did I wait so long to read this book? It‘s a very nice story, I loved Cassandra. I had to look to see when this was written, it was hard to place a time period on the story at the beginning.

This is the copy you sent for my LFL @AmyG . I‘m so glad I read it before putting it out there. Now someone else in my neighborhood can enjoy it 🙂.

I'm really behind in posting reviews so I'm combining these two since I read them back-to-back and and they both have British rural life as the setting for the action. And both have naive narrators. “Self-consciously naive“ in the case of Cassandra and perhaps a bit self-deluded on the part of Leo. The Go-Between is set at the turn of the 19th century and I Capture the Castle is set in the 1930s.
#BookSpin @TheAromaofBooks #nyrbbookclub

DrexEdit Both books use 1st person narration so the only view we get on the story is from the main character, reliable or not. Both books look at issues of class and rural vs. urban living. The biggest difference between the two was that Cassandra is in love with living life. It's the most important thing to her and every little thing is a source of wonder to her. Even so, she is strong and resilient and can cope with a lot more than you think she can. ⬇ 6mo
DrexEdit Leo on the other hand seems to cut himself off from life, especially after his shock of discovering what Marian and Ted have involved him in. He almost stops living at the age of 12. I liked both books very much and the narrative voice for each was so enjoyable! I really enjoyed spending time with these characters! 6mo
BarbaraBB I loved both of them too. Great review, comparing them 🤍 6mo

How can it be July already? Here is my #BookSpin list. Getting even two books read will be a challenge given my long list of reading commitments and going back to in-office work. I find I'm really resentful of that commuting time! I know, first world problems! 😬

I haven't posted a #bookspin in over a year. The whole last year just threw off any plans or moods I might have had. But I'm back to try again! I've added in some random mood read choices and short stories that should fit my current reading aura better.

I did manage to read about half of my #bookspin original list. So this is a mostly new list and I'm looking forward to reading ANY of the titles on it! Let the spinning begin!

Okay: I'll admit it. I'm in a reading slump. I think I know the *kind* of thing I'd like to read...but I've been wrong before. 😅

Now seeking: I Capture the Castle read-alikes.

Charming & quietly eccentric characters, strong setting, bucolic. Something sort-of gentle & wandering & thoughtful.

Any suggestions for me?

Ruthiella I second Guard Your Daughters and O, the Brave Music @LeahBergen . O‘ The Brave is also a good read-alike for A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.😀 (edited) 11mo

A woman on the brink of finding herself & love lives in a ruined castle where splendor & failure abound and hope springs with every midsummer‘s eve ritual. Many stories are so gently told: the longing for a childhood place; sibling jealousy; the carousel of unrequited love; the tricky benevolence of rich people & the despair of the poor; & the loss of what was never yours. I found myself relating strongly to Cassandra: her love of history, nature, family, journaling, music, &, most of all, her desire to talk about & examine herself & her interests all felt familiar & friendly to me. Her family members are one absurdity after another &, since I don't have to live with them, I felt all the affection for them that she did. But the last third, while still enjoyable, ventured a little too much into farce for me. ⬇️

bookandbedandtea First, the dad became too much near the end. And nearly every character was in love with someone who loved someone else. I felt terrible for both Stephen and Simon. Still, I loved it and I long to live in a quiet country village. Preferably in the 1930s please. 😊 1y
TheAromaofBooks Great review!! I overall enjoyed this one, except for, as you said, the ending where everyone seems to be in love with the wrong person - it just didn't feel like it added much to the story to write it that way. 1y

I loved rereading this classic. Cassandra is a teen living in a rundown castle with her family. She records their experiences in her journal and life gets interesting when their paths cross with 2 wealthy American brothers. The characters are complicated & there is no simple happily ever after. Our zoom-held book club, Pandemic Pages, finished I Capture the Castle this week! A wonderful read, especially considering I had forgotten a majority of plot points since reading it in 2014! The charming narration by Cassandra through her coming-of-age tale is what I remembered most from the first read, but on my second read, I found I wanted to know more about the characters and felt for ones I‘d overlooked in the past.

So many of my favorite bookish characters have been posted already, (Elizabeth Bennett, Jo March, Hermione, Rory Gilmore) so I‘m going with Cassandra Mortmain from the tagged book.

This book contains some American characters who remark on things they find interesting/different about England. And yet as of 76% they haven't remarked on the thing I think I would have the hardest time with if I were transported back to 1930s England: pre-decimal currency.

A pound is 20 shillings and a guinea is 21 shillings and they just use both? I guess I would get better at mental arithmetic, or else just never know how much anything cost.

effani I'm aware there are historical reasons for it, but still, it didn't have to be like that. 2y

This book was remarkably heartwarming and funny. It was such a joy to read. I would describe it as Austen-esque with a dose of realism. I really dug it.

#7covers#7days #coverlove #covercrush Day 3

@monalyisha it‘s your fault I own this book so I felt obligated to tag you 😉 If you feel like playing along, post a book cover you love each day for 7 days with no explanation.

Also, I‘m really bad at the no explanation part.... 🤷‍♀️😆❤️

monalyisha Guilty & proud of it! 2y
erzascarletbookgasm I love this book and this edition is gorgeous! 2y

Thanks for tagging me, @sudi! 🥰
1. I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith (it's super on my list and yet 😶)
2. Harry Potter series, Pride and Prejudice
3. I don't have a concrete number but gosh, so many!
4. Scenes from a Writer's Life, by Ruskin Bond. Very good!
5. Anyone who hasn't participated yet! 👋

LeahBergen Aww. I Capture the Castle is a delight. I hope you enjoy it! 2y
sudi It's quite embarrassing but i've never read Ruskin Bond 🙈, i used to love reading his column in Times but never got a chance to read the books. But i'll definitely try reading it in the future 😊 2y

Tanisha_A @sudi No time is late to start a new author (I think we'll have to make peace here, the TBR 🤯). You have a bunch of stories to enjoy ahead. 💚 2y
Tanisha_A @Eggs Thank you for creating these fun questions. After this, i should definitely pick up 'I Capture the Castle'. 😊 2y

“When I read a book, I put in all the #imagination I can, so that it is almost like writing the book as well as reading it - or rather, it is like living it. It makes reading so much more exciting, but I don't suppose many people try to do it..”

I loved this book!
