I grew up reading every Nancy Drew book my school had available. I was obsessed! I'd read them on the bus to and from school each day. I have so many fond memories of those books. It's never too late, and you're never too old to relive some of your favorites! My goal this summer is to read as many of the books in order as I can. #mystery
What are some of the books you fell in love with when you were younger that you'd like to re-read? Why?

Addison_Reads I loved the Nancy Drew, Trixie Belden, and any horse book I could get my hands on. I haven't reread any since I was a kid, but now I might have to change that. 3mo

Hooray for the return of outdoor festivals! Especially when you can get amazing scented candles, adorable coasters made from repurposed fabric, a giant helping of strawberry shortcake, and a book from a series you somehow never read in your youth. #secret #bigjunereadathon

Tamra This reminds me to read book 2 aloud with my daughter this summer. 😊 I didn‘t read the series in my childhood either. 4mo
BookBabe Wow, I remember reading this as a child…looking at this book brings back all the feels of summertime, childhood, the excitement of the story, the smell and feel of the book in my hands 😄💙 4mo

Got some fun mail today—new issue of Oh Reader! One of the articles is titled “Dining with Drew: My Experience Recording What Nancy Drew Ate, One Meal at a Time”. I loved reading Nancy Drew as a girl so that sounds delightful.

1. The Nancy Drew series; The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes

2. I love reading in all kinds of weather, but if I had to choose, it would be rain or snowy weather. Something about cuddling up with a good book, a throw, a beverage and a cat (if the cat cooperates!)

3. Having my mother in my life; today's her 91st birthday 🎂

This week's #WednesdayTradition features The Secret of the Old Clock by Carolyn Keene and an AriZona Hard Iced Tea.⁣

The last time I was on a cross Canada trip, it was one way from East to West, and I was 12. Now, more than two decades later, I decided to start a reread of the original 56 volumes on a road trip, across and back, with my wonderful partner.⁣

Man, Iced Tea is different from the last trip. 😉

PickettT Ah, I remember this was the second book I'd borrowed from my school library when we were finally allowed to take them home and given a week's time to complete them. It made me stay up late and finish it on the same day. The rest of the week was spent in anticipation of the next week's library hour. 😂 Good old days! 12mo

“That was great!” Lots of hand clapping.

My daughter loved the first Nancy Drew mystery, so onto the next one. I‘m a little surprised, I was concerned it would be too slow moving but it was suspenseful enough to keep the pages turning. Always a good idea in kids lit to have cliff hanger chapters.

We laughed at the sexist moments, which were fitting to the period. Like when the police officer offers to drive her own car. 😂

Johanna414 One of my 7th grade students has been reading her way through the Nancy Drew series this school year and loving them! 1y
Ruthiella Yay! Another Nancy Drew fan! 😀 1y

Nancy has a new color coordinated pal. 😄

We‘re at the cliffhanger chapter when Nancy gets locked in the closet by the thieves. I asked my daughter what she thinks Nancy will do and one thing she suggested was calling for help on her cell phone. Then the lightbulb went off when she realized there were no cells in the 30‘s. 😂

Cortg My teen yelled at the screen to use a cell phone. She was watching Stranger Things taking place in the 80‘s. She said she totally forgot about the no cell thing 😂 It‘s a weird concept for those who have only always used a cell phone. 1y

Tamra @megnews thank you! 1y
Tamra @AmyG I know it‘s a beloved favorite, which is why I‘m hoping she likes it. Our interest was piqued by the first chapter. 👏🏾 1y
Tamra @CoverToCoverGirl I hope we make good memories too! 1y
Tamra @Ruthiella 😄 I hope it is for her too. 1y
ravenlee My kiddo adores this series - in my opinion the first part of the set is the best. They get...harder to swallow as they go. (A plot against NASA involving exploding oranges? Nancy becoming a circus rider with almost no training? An SOS written on the inside of a plane‘s window, in lipstick, by a bound Nancy?) And there‘s some disturbing racism on occasion, too. Still, I loved reading them together and hope you do, too. 1y
GingerAntics I love that you‘re doing this together. 💙💙💙 What a fun family activity. 1y
Cathythoughts Gorgeous picture ❤️ 1y
LeahBergen Here‘s hoping you both like it! 🤞 1y
Gissy Yes, I hope you both like Nancy!🤗 1y
Tamra @ravenlee good to know. We only have the first 4 - it‘s a box set. We‘ll see how it goes. We were surprised Nancy is 18 - expected the character to be younger. 1y
Tamra @GingerAntics I hope it lasts! If not this one, we have many others. 1y
Tamra @Cathythoughts thank you! 😄 1y
Tamra @LeahBergen @Gissy 🤞🏾🤞🏾😁 1y
GingerAntics @Tamra wait, she‘s 18?! I always thought she was much younger than that, like 14 or 15 maybe. 1y
ravenlee @Tamra @GingerAntics yes, Nancy is perpetually 18 - it gives her a way not to be in school and the ability to drive and travel on her own, which are both essential to most of the stories. There are spin-off series with a younger Nancy, though. 1y
GingerAntics @ravenlee oh I guess that makes sense, and I suppose it opens the stories to a slightly wider audience. I‘ve never read any Nancy Drew. Perhaps I‘ll give her a go one of these days. 1y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I really wanted to read a Nancy Drew again this past week so that‘s what I did lol. I read this one as a kid and loved it but honestly didn‘t remember the specifics. I just remember loving Nancy Drew and thinking she was so brave. This book holds up after all these years. I‘m glad I revisited this book.

I used to read Nancy Drew in French when I was younger, so I was excited to dive back into the first book.
I enjoyed it, but that's it.
First, I noticed a plot inconsistency: The Turners say to Nancy that their phone is out of order, but the day after she phones them.
Then, something that annoyed me was the repetitions about how nice, good-hearted Nancy is... It was a little bit too cheesy.
Fun facts: in France she's called Alice ;)

Just bought this old version of this Nancy Drew book. I read several articles discussing that the pre-1959 versions of The Secret of the Old Clock were quite different. It says copyright 1930 but I believe this is a 1947 printing. I‘m looking forward to a less watered-down version of Nancy. Anyone read the old version?

I read this one aloud to the girls, and while the writing is a little clunky in a few spots (lots of repetitive adjectives), they loved the mystery, and I was impressed all over again at Nancy‘s smarts and skills — I mean, she changed a tire, and fixed a boat, and bravely tracked down thieves! I didn‘t read these as a kid (Bobbsey Twins and Cam Jansen were my speed), but I have really enjoyed reading these to my daughter. I read this on my own - we reread it together a few months ago - as number 2 for #nancydrewchallenge

Does it work as a modern story? Of course not. But it‘s a good intro to mysteries and doesn‘t get into bad language, misbehavior, or sophomoric humor. A plus in my book.

post image

It‘s been years since I last read a Nancy Drew book. I had never read the first book in the series, so I was excited to find a copy on Overdrive. Revolving around the search for a revised will that would benefit a deceased man‘s most destitute relatives, this book‘s mystery was engaging. My only critique would be that Nancy as a character seems much too good to be true. This was the ‘50‘s revised edition, & I‘d love to read the ‘30‘s original.

post image

Revisiting an old favorite is always a good idea. Nine year old me's greatest aspiration was to drive a blue convertible and solve mysteries. I can't say this story held up over the years, but it gave me the nostalgic feels I wanted. Laura Linney does a lovely job with the narration.

My mom sent me my surviving Nancy drew books a couple of years back and I'm so happy to have them. I read them all multiple times. These days I find them unbearable to read but they're still picks due to the happiness they gave me in childhood. Frock. Luncheon. Roadster.
Some of my favorite words from the older 1930s Nancy Drew texts.
Did you know that the texts have been revised? They cut out 5 chapters of the early books sometime in the 70s to save on printing costs.
I enjoyed rereading this story, this time from the 1950s tweed edition - it has the full text and some great illustrations (R) compared to the revised edition (BL).

In the latest episode of my podcast (out today!), fellow Brooklyn-based writer Kase Wickman and I dive into the first book in the Nancy Drew series, The Secret of the Old Clock. This was Kase‘s first experience reading Nancy Drew, and her reaction (to some!) might surprise you. Check out the link in my bio or search The SSR Podcast on iTunes, Stitcher, or Google Play to listen!

StephanieSays The Nancy Drew series is so important to me! Definitely going to check out the podcast. Have you ever played any of the Nancy Drew PC games? 4y
ahoffkosik @StephanieSays i don‘t think so! But that sounds like something that would be up my alley! 4y
StephanieSays @ahoffkosik just binged every episode of SSR, and it‘s so great! All of your guests are so interesting, and I love the concept of the show. In addition to that, I‘m also from suburban PA and spent every summer at the Jersey Shore and loved Sloppy Firsts in part because of that. 4y
StephanieSays @ahoffkosik Also, I just moved to NYC, and I‘m curious how you found your book club. I‘ve been trying to find one as a way to read more and make friends in this new city, but I haven‘t had any success finding one with people my age. 4y
ahoffkosik @StephanieSays sounds like we have so much in common! Thank you for listening to the show. It makes me so happy to hear you‘re loving it and finding it bingeworthy :) and welcome to NYC! We built the book club up from scratch out of a really small group of friends, and over time brought in another person every few months. If you find even one person at work or something you can connect with, i think that‘s a good place to start! 4y
