Was perplexed and devastated when I read this last night.

I LOVE the Wizard of OZ. Grew up loving the OZ. My mom (where my Indigenous American blood comes from) LOVES OZ!

How did we not know about this?!?

This morning I did some research. And this is based on truth...but I kept researching.

👇🏼

AnnCrystal It seems like OZ may have been an unofficial apology from the author, Baum??? OR at least a showing of how Baum had a change of opinion, possibly due to his mother-in-law who is said to have been a Native American advocate.

The family of the author has since made an official, public apology.

After puzzling through this issue, my personal feeling is...

While Baum's early articles can never be justified. The fact that he showed a possible change of mind to his prejudice, is an importance that shouldn't be ignored.

In our current, political climate, this history is hopeful. This shows that there is a true possibility of changing the prejudicial hatred of the people who seem hopelessly lost in their viewpoints.

🤨📚🤔✊🏼🥺👠💝.

7 Generations: A Plains Cree Saga | David Robertson, Scott B. Henderson
post image

I know this history. I am familiar with the tragedies and struggles highlighted in this book...yet, it was still a difficult read.

Read this last night, during a rainstorm. I fell right into the beautifully drawn pages. Nearly cried twice, but took brief pauses from the book to calm myself.

This is to the point. Nothing over done. No unnecessary details.

👇🏼

AnnCrystal
I love multi-generation stories. When it comes to stories from my own Native Country, I often hesitate with such stories because they usually have difficult topics weaved into the storyline.

This covered a whole bundle of difficult topics, especially involving suicide.

Yet I'm glad that I took a chance with this one. It was respectful to the characters and to the readers.

Very well done.

ImperfectCJ I asked my 16yo how he was doing in the wake of yesterday's violence in Utah and Colorado, and he said, "It's just the same old, same old, you know?" It about broke my heart. 2mo
DinoMom @ImperfectCJ what a horrible feeling it is as a parent to hear how today‘s children and youth recognize this as just “same old , same old”. My heart goes out to all the families but also to just all the youth that this has become the state of the world they live in 2mo

An earlier edition of this book sat on my parents' bookshelf for most of my life. I'm finally diving in. 😅

dabbe I can't wait to read what you think about it. I've read bit and pieces but never the whole. People at my high school tried to ban it. And this was before the #cheetosatan years. 😵‍💫 2mo
lil1inblue @dabbe I got through Chapter 1 last night. I have a feeling I'm going to be posting about this one a lot. And I am unsurprised, though saddened, that people have tried/are trying to ban it. It challenges our savior narrative. 😏 2mo

I am deeply alarmed by the state of the U.S. Many of you are, too. So, let‘s learn about fascism — a book club, perhaps. But, if nothing else, book suggestions. Let‘s start with WHAT WE KNEW: TERROR, MASS MURDER, AND EVERYDAY LIFE IN NAZI GERMANY.

Amiable Thank you for speaking out! And for the book suggestion—requesting it from the library right now. (edited) 3mo

I've been reading a lot of non-fiction about fascism, nazism and authoritarianism in the last couple of years, but not in English and not necessarily of direct interest to US readers, so I'll probably lurk rather than participate...

To Shape a Dragon's Breath | Moniquill Blackgoose

Pickpick

I wish this kind of read was available when I was a teenager!

As a book about a girl and her dragon, this book was splendid fun. As a book about an indigenous island girl and her endangered species dragon, this is the kind of book I've been waiting for...as an indigenous reader, this fantasy is a treasure 📚🐉💖.

I prefer books without battles, but some may find this a bit slow paced.

👇🏼

AnnCrystal This was like a journey log from the MC's POV, with plenty of drama mixed into the storyline.

I was trying to keep away from books that capture some of the darkness that is now our crazy, chaotic reality.

If this book would have been available before these dark times, I wouldn't have been as disturbed by the unjust society that Anequs and her dragon Kasaqua must journey through.

👇🏼
3mo
AnnCrystal Reading this now, during these dark times that we're all experiencing, I found this to be an unsettling read.

Unsettling, yet beautiful.

This world was well developed and incredibly detailed. All the characters were crafted with care and respect.

I would have liked more time on the island and learning more about the traditions there. Perhaps in the second book.

The MC Anequs held the resilience and dignity from real life Native Nations.

👇🏼
3mo
AnnCrystal I've read books with lesbian or gay characters. This is the first with a bisexual character (Anequs). I liked how this gave a unique chance with two possible love interests for Anequs...although, I don't believe I cared for the polyamorous. At this point, I'm not sure who I like better for Anequs. I like both Liberty and Theod...but I'd prefer for Anequs to truly fall for one or the other, not both at the same time (that's just me).

AnnCrystal The magic system was just beginning to be truly explored at the end of the book, so I'm hoping the next book shows more.

I am also hoping that we readers get to travel to the unconquered lands, meet the tribal people there, and learn more about the indigenous methods of working with Dragons.

This storyline is incredible.

There are 511 pages divided into 87 unmarked chapters.
