⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was the first book By Agatha Christie that I‘ve read, and it was a solid murder mystery. There were times that I wasn‘t a fan of the author‘s writing style and the abundant amount of times she said “queer” despite it being a normal word for her time period (she could have at least switched it out intermittently). Overall, this was a fast-paced book with an interesting plot that had me guessing until the very end.

If this is supposed to be some of her best work, it boggles my mind how she could be hailed as a great writer. The writing in my opinion is atrocious. She must have used the word queer over a hundred times. Considering how many words in the English language can be used descriptively, there really is no excuse for that. The story itself was pretty okay but I really had to force myself to look past the writing. #review #booked2020

Started my first Agatha Christie novel. 41 pages in and I just gotta ask...how many times does she need to say the word queer? Like honestly...I know this was written decades ago but it‘s ridiculous...I‘ll keep chuggin along for now but ...ugh

Does this get better?

#currentlyreading #booked2020 #readinggoals #readingresolutions #bookworm

shanaqui I can't remember noticing that! You gotta admit the circumstances the characters find themselves in *are* a bit weird, though. 😁 I don't think Christie ever tended to particularly flowery writing, so it's fairly likely she does keep repeating the same vocabulary. 1mo
magyklyXdelish I‘m definitely going to keep trying and pay more attention to the story than the writing. Repeating words or phrases unnecessarily is always something that annoyed me 😅 1mo
KBlackScan Interesting. I‘m not sure if I‘ve ever read one of her books or at least haven‘t recently. 1mo
4thhouseontheleft Some of the vocabulary in her books are very, very outdated, or annoying. Yet I still read her books. (edited) 1mo
magyklyXdelish I‘m enjoying the story but yes the vocabulary is bothersome. It‘s taking a while to look past it. 1mo

My first Agatha Christie book and I wasn‘t disappointed. I very much like books set in the current day so the fact that ‘And Then There Were None‘ was published in 1939 made me question whether it would be my cup of tea but I needn‘t have worried, it seems a good mystery stands the test of time! I can definitely see why, over 100 years on, Agatha Christie still holds the title of the Queen of Crime!

Bk3 of the #24B4Monday #24B42020 #readathon & Bk14 of the #WinterGames for #TeamNutcracker is done! One of my fave Dame Agathas, not the 1st but in my top 5,she purportedly was told by her editor to write the epilogue revealing the guilty party because no one could figure out who it was! A locked room mystery where an entire island is the room,10 people are invited to Soldiers Island where one by one they die. #ImpulseRead 11pts #PointsTotal-2,408

Lizpixie @Andrew65 the fires are a nightmare, Sydney is completely surrounded. There‘s a constant smoke haze in the air & we‘re getting ash fall here regularly. Our fireys are exhausted, they‘ve been fighting them since October and most of them are volunteer RFS with full time jobs they‘ve taken leave from. Without pay in most cases. They‘re true heroes, the lot of them. And they aren‘t even outfitted properly, most only have one uniform which are filthy👇 2mo
Lizpixie and are using inadequate masks or none at all, just holding their breath then running to get a gasp of air before going back! Theirs a woman on Facebook who‘s crowdfunding to buy them all masks, they‘re $90 each and so far she‘s managed to hand out over 1,000. She‘s phenomenal, she‘s under My Sisters Keeper on FB, check her out & donate if you want, god knows they need those masks to stop lung damage, the Pollies won‘t pay for them. Bastards. 2mo
Lizpixie @ljuliel @Eggbeater thank you so much for your well wishes, I‘m crossing everything I have to make sure he stays safe. 2mo
Andrew65 @Lizpixie That is beyond terrible! And whilst all that is going on Scott Morrison felt he was most needed sunning himself in Hawaii 😳 Leadership at its very best! 😡 All possible Resources should be being targeted at this by the government, it shouldn‘t need crowdfunding. Sending positive thoughts and I will check out the Facebook page. 2mo

The are crimes that can be punished by the law but what about the crimes in which the guilty walks free because of the circumstances? That's what the whole book is about. Ten complete strangers gather on an island responding to the summons of an unknown individual only to find themselves being killed off in accordance to a nursery rhyme. A brilliantly riveting book with a twist so wild and abrupt that you'll never see it coming. My review 5/5.

ljuliel Really good book ! 4mo
Judgemental_Biliophile @ljuliel I was absolutely blown away by this book 4mo
ljuliel I‘ve read only a handful of Christie‘s books, but I can‘t imagine any of them being better than this one. I never ever figure out mystery books til they tell at the end who the Bad Guy is. I would‘ve never gotten this one either. 4mo
Judgemental_Biliophile @ljuliel I know right. Even after the killer was revealed it took me sometime to believe it. It was so wild till the very end 4mo
ljuliel Yes, she definitely made this book a bit like following a maze with lots of dead ends. I kept thinking as the number of people were whittled down, it‘d get easier to guess. Nope, didn‘t help me a bit 😊 4mo

Hmm, I have mixed feelings about this #audiobook #mystery. On the one hand, it was deliciously creepy and dark, plus I loved the closed space of being set on an island. On the other hand, I feel like Christie broke the contract between mystery reader and author with the way that the mystery unfolds and the killer is revealed. You can't give the reader false information and then explain later how what was described didn't actually happen.

kgriffith I think there are two very distinct kinds of mysteries: ones where you‘re given enough information to at least have a hunch so you feel very smart if you‘re right when all is revealed, and ones where there‘s at least one piece you could never have thought up so you‘re guaranteed to be surprised by the ending. I‘m generally angry about the latter, but this one was just so damned good that I forgave her 😊 Now I want to re-read it! 6mo
