And Then There Were None
And Then There Were None | Agatha Christie
First there were ten--a curious assortment of strangers summoned as weekend guests to a private island off the coast of Devon. Their host, an eccentric millionaire unkonwn to all of them, is nowhere to be found. All that the guests have in common is a wicked past they're unwilling to reveal--and a secret that will seal their fate. For each has been marked for murder. One by one they fall prey. Before the weekend is out, there will be none. And only the dead are above suspicion.

A group of people are invited to a get together at a secluded island resort. Then the guests start getting murdered one by one. Pretty lousy party if you ask me!

CrowCAH A girl sees a guy at a dance party. He‘s awfully boring-no dancer. They meet again at his aunt‘s small house, only a piano for entertainment. An intimidating marriage proposal happens; the lady refuses. Third time they run into each other in the woods; they have a long discourse on the merits of Pride and Prejudice. 🤣 3d

Christie's style is so character based, with all information delivered to the reader primarily delivered through dialogue. She did an amazing job of keeping all options open, and causing doubt everytime you think you've solved it. Leading to a satisfying conclusion that makes sense, to me at least. A classic closed room who dun it, done right! #catsoflitsy #mystery #botm

#ReadAlikeThatGotAway
This is a brilliant question posed by the wonderful @monalyisha Is there a book that made such an impact, you wish you could read it again for the first time? For me, it‘s “And Then There Were None”. As a kid, I loved children‘s mysteries like the Hardy Boys, but nothing prepared me for the first time I tried Agatha Christie. Haunting, spellbinding and mind boggling, this book set me on a course to be a bibliophile for life!

Hestapleton This book made me the thriller junkie I am! 2mo
DaveGreen7777 @Hestapleton I can totally understand why, this book is unforgettable! 😱 2mo
RainyDayReading I have been trying to find a book that captures the feel of And Then There Were None for years!! I‘ve found books with pieces, but not fully what I‘ve been hunting for. But anything compared to And Then There Were None I will read in a heartbeat. 2mo

BibliOphelia I loved this book from my teen years on. And I still do, as a classic mystery, but in honor of Black History Month, did you know this book was originally titled Ten Little N*ggers, based on the children's rhyme of the same name? It was then polished into Ten Little Indians before reaching the title most people know it by. I mention it as I believe it's always important to realize how pervasive and toxic racism can be. (edited) 3mo

The Dame is so plot-driven that reading her is often unnecessary when good screen adaptations exist. This one is worth the read. AllAboutAgatha the podcast gives the best review of this psychological thriller. My favourite passage (Christie shines suspicion on everyone in turn): "Carefully, Justice Wargrave removed his false teeth and dropped them into a glass of water. The shrunken lips fell in. It was a cruel mouth now, cruel and predatory."

My second book for #24in48 is done! I'm behind pace, but I have nothing to do tomorrow except read, so I'm still hopeful I can finish!

This was a creepily delicious, psychologically fraught murder mystery, and so different from all the other Christie books I've read! Until the epilogue, where the murderer explains in detail how everything went down and why. I honestly wish they had left the identity of the murderer up in the air, but oh well.

My first Agatha Christie book, and it was very disappointing . The fact that the book needs an epitaph to reveal the real killer didn‘t mean it was clever - it was too far fetched and impossible. There is also some anti-Semitic language in the beginning and given that this book was published in 1940 you‘d think the author or publisher might have recognized how problematic that is and edited. The author note claims this was her favorite book. Bleh

I just read the Wikipedia page of Agatha Christie and jumped this one on the top of my to read list.
I read its translation as a teenager but learned since that said translation was modified to be more politically correct, or whatever looked like that in France in the 80s (the French title used to include the N word after all...)
Anyway original version as written by Lady A :)

And Then There Were None | Agatha Christie

Pickpick

Finished my first book of the new year and can knock off the letter A in my #LitsyAtoZ challenge!
At first I was confused with so many characters and situations being mentioned, but halfway through I found myself sucked into wanting to find out "whodunit" and didn't care about some continued confusion along the way. A really fun, quick read! I'll be on the lookout for more Agatha Christie mysteries!

Yes. Of course, you're very young... you haven't got to that yet. But it does come! The blessed relief when you know that you've done with it all--that you haven't got to carry the burden any longer. You'll feel that too, someday...
