The Bronze Horseman
The Bronze Horseman | Paullina Simons
The golden skies, the translucent twilight, the white nights, all hold the promise of youth, of love, of eternal renewal. The war has not yet touched this city of fallen grandeur, or the lives of two sisters, Tatiana and Dasha Metanova, who share a single room in a cramped apartment with their brother and parents. Their world is turned upside down when Hitler's armies attack Russia and begin their unstoppable blitz to Leningrad.Yet there is light in the darkness. Tatiana meets Alexander, a brave young officer in the Red Army. Strong and self-confident, yet guarding a mysterious and troubled past, he is drawn to Tatianaand she to him. Starvation, desperation, and fear soon grip their city during the terrible winter of the merciless German siege. Tatiana and Alexander's impossible love threatens to tear the Metanova family apart and expose the dangerous secret Alexander so carefully protectsa secret as devastating as the war itselfas the lovers are swept up in the brutal tides that will change the world and their lives forever.

I loved this. I love long books, historical fiction- especially the kind that I end up looking up for more info, love stories, war stories... For me, there wasn't a boring part in the book. This even had a surprising amount of intense romance. 😳 I get to stay in this alternate reality for a little while longer. I'm starting the 2nd book in the series immediately. I love to read a series when all the books are already released!

This book is such a wonderful love story. The love between Alexander and Tatiana was absolutely marvelous. There were a few spots in this book that were slow, redundant, or unnecessary. This book is around 800 pages, and some of those pages just kept exploring old topics that were already dealt with. Maybe I'll read the next one, who knows. But for now, the love between Alexander and Tatiana makes my heart sing.

I wanted to like this book. The storyline is wonderful. The circumstances surrounding the family and what they've endured is so good. The romance is complete rubbish. I was so mad about this yesterday I was wishing Tatiana was a real person so I could punch her. I am finally willing to set the book down and move on. My life doesn't need to be worse for reading this story.
I quit @ page 460. So much time wasted.
***More in the comments***

bg_reads I am so sad about DNFing because everything else about this story is amazing. I've never read any HF from the Russian perspective and I loved that about this book. The romance ruined it for me. It would have been so good, otherwise. 💔 8mo
Mamareader12 If you want to try another book with the HF perspective of Russia, I read Kristen Hannah‘s Winter Garden and really liked it! I can‘t compare it to this (Bronze Horseman is on my TBR list), but maybe it‘ll sit better? 🤞🏼 7mo

This book is so much longer than it needs to be. 900 pages. The author could has said just as much in 600 pages. I get that it was agonizing. I get that she's trying to portray that this agony may never end, and I feel that! I want to skip forward to something happening. I assume that since there are 2 other books in this series, that something changes. Things get better. I have to hold onto that.

This book is heartbreaking... The unfiltered chatterbox from the beginning has turned into a different type of unfiltered. There are no rose colored glasses. The drudgery of war. Lack of food. Bombs. Short tempers. Wasting away. Death.
I am simply speechless.

I feel as though by page 900 I won't be any happier with it than I am now, and I'm really unhappy with the way things are going. And I still have roughly 700 pages to read.

bg_reads @Zee3 the storyline is so interesting! The writing style took some time to get used to, for me. The beginning was torture... But since she "lost her childhood" it's gotten better. Not so unfiltered. I am now wondering why I decided to read such a long book... It's so long! I want to know what happens! I'm almost 300 pages in and not even 1/3 through! ? 8mo
Zee3 @cbwaug yes, I agree, the story completely drew me in. I do love WWII books, and I haven't read much about what was going on in Russia at the time. Sometimes I love big books because they don't end as quickly as the shorter ones!! 😂 8mo
bg_reads @Zee3 this is exactly how I'm feeling about this... I feel almost as if I'm experiencing it with them... I'm wanting the sadness, war, famine, bombs... To end! When will it end? Normally there's maybe 20 pages of suffering and then the book ends... This is a whole new experience for me! 8mo
bg_reads @Zee3 it's so good... So very good. 8mo

Thankfully the perspective changes and the writing style seems to have cleaned up as well. I understand that the beginning is about her innocence and how naive teenagers have a lot of thoughts going through their head about every little thing, but man, that was hard to read.
The storyline itself is amazing! I'm so interested in what will happen!

So far I can't STAND the protagonist. This book is so long winded! She has no sense of direction even on her own street, where she lives, and for some reason every slight thing a person could ever think is included. Where was the proofreader?! Get on with it! 🤦🏽‍♀️

I‘ve heard so many good things, and there‘s no doubt this was written with an outstanding amount of research, which is why I gave it 2/5. The main characters - Tatiana and Alexander - are two of the most infuriating, stubborn, obnoxious characters I‘ve ever read. I love a good antihero (Scarlett O‘Hara and Rhett Butler are my favorite), but these two were the worst. #thebronzehorseman #donotrecommend #badreads #bookisihated

I‘m not much for historical fiction to begin with and this one just lost my interest too many times. It felt a bit repetitive and I got lost at some points. There were some parts that got me super interested and then it would fall again. I like the perspective and that it is a WWII book set in Russia which I found very interesting.
