There was an eighth son of an eighth son. He was, quite naturally, a wizard. And there it should have ended. However (for reasons we'd better not go into), he had seven sons. And then he had an eighth son...a wizard squared...a source of magic...a Sourcerer. SOURCERY SEES THE RETURN OF RINCEWIND AND THE LUGGAGE AS THE DISCWORLD FACES ITS GREATEST-AND FUNNIEST-CHALLENGE YET.

And yes, I did get an OFMD depression robe. Nothing has ever made me happier.

This is my least favorite Discworld book of the 9 or 10 I've read so far. It was simultaneously drawn out and unfinished.

Not my fave Discworld book and definitely not a memorable addition to the series. Lots of trademark Pratchett humour but it lacked a lot of the satirical insights of his other books. Also, Rincewind is just not one of my favorite characters. However, it‘s really cool to see Pratchett develop as a writer through this series, and I love seeing the Discworld evolve and grow into the fantastic series I‘ve enjoyed for years.

Book 33

Absolute power corrupts absolutely, especially in the hands of a child.

I like this book the 8th son of an 8th son is no mere wizard.

This whole mindset makes me wonder if there's any truth to the magic in the sphere world around the 7th son of a 7th son. My husband is the 7th child and a son (though he has 3 brothers and 3 step sisters so it probably doesn't count) not that it would matter anyway since we only have 3 daughters.

I think a prolonged break from Rincewind is in order...this book got quite a few chuckles out of me but I think it went a bit too off the rails even by usual Discworld standards. a shame, since I rather liked Conina and some of the stuff with Al Khali, but it didn't feel like this book knew where it was going.

I feel like Pratchett took a hodgepodge of ideas and scenes from his previous 4 books and smooshed them together to make this book. It's not bad but it doesn't really bring anything new to the series. But even if it's not Pratchett's best it was still amusing and I liked the characters.

Finished up Sourcery on the way back from Olympic today, and even my good mood from all the mountains and hiking couldn't make me enjoy it. The book started out beautifully, lots of humor, an interesting antagonist, but the middle went downhill. Two- dimensional supporting characters, predictable plot, and one of those "forget it ever happened" endings. Ugh! I gave it a so-so because the first half really was funny.

I had yesterday off which would have been great for reading but I couldn‘t focus well so I got a lot of little chores and errands done. Which was great actually. julesG Okay. I'll start. 😁. I quite liked this. Not my favourite, but I liked re/reading it, for the first time in English. Did anyone think JK Rowling might have got a few ideas from this book? Elite school/university just for magicians, a great hall, enchanted building, a talking hat,... To name only a few things that I remember off the top of my head. 4y
dariazeoli I am just not very fond of Rincewind, so after a couple of 4 stars I was back to “meh” on this one. @julesG I definitely thought of Rowling when we were first introduced to the university a couple of books ago. Now I‘m convinced she‘s a Discworld fan! 4y
julesG @dariazeoli I forgot to jump into the old discussion, so I thought of bringing it up now. Since we're talking of JKR, maybe Rincewind was the blueprint for Filch? 4y
DGRachel @julesG @dariazeoli This sent me into a Google rabbit hole. The Discworld books are not one of the influences that JKR acknowledges, so if she was influenced by his books, it was either unconscious or something she is in denial about. 4y
julesG @DGRachel I never even thought to Google it. Thanks. 4y
dariazeoli @julesG @DGRachel There‘s some interesting hits down that Google hole! 4y
Soubhiville I agree with @dariazeoli , this was a weaker story for me after the last couple books. I did enjoy the deeper look into how Discworld‘s magic works, and I always love the librarian. 4y
DGRachel @dariazeoli Yes, there are definitely some interesting threads to follow with that particular Google search. I find it interesting how the media tends to create “feuds” where none exist. 4y
Laura317 I thought it was so-so. I didn‘t enjoy the story. Maybe I was tired of Rincewind? I always love the Librarian (Oook!). @julesG I think that Rowling must be a DIscWorld fan, even after reading @DGRachel ‘s googling. It just seems too coincidental. Happy to see Death toward the end. I kinda hoped he‘d put Rincewind out of (my?) misery. 😂 4y
julesG @Laura317 Agree to all of this. I think JKR drew inspiration from Discworld. Rincewind 🙈 4y
gossamerchild This is so funny, because I actually found myself looking Rincewind so much more in this book. In general, though, I agree. He is super annoying. His neuroses must be growing on me 😂😂 4y
Aimeesue Rincewind's just made that way. He's supposed to be annoying, which he is exceedingly good at. I'm not his biggest fan either, but I ADORE The Luggage! And the Librarian, of course. 4y
Aimeesue @julesG To be fair, boarding schools are kind of a thing in Great Britain, right? With a long and storied history. They show up in Skippy Dies, A Little Princess, Miss Pym Disposes, Nicholas Nickleby, Never Let Me Go, Old Filth, Brideshead Revisited and on and on and on. Given that and your basic British, Scottish, and Celtic mythology - Aurthurian legend, wizards, witches, druids, etc., it's kind of surprising that the two haven't merged before. 4y
khooliha I love Rincewind and found a lot of his personal stuff very relatable on this reread. The goofy parody stuff around him? I could have done without that. This book mostly felt unbalanced, with neither half of the story feeling especially fleshed out. Oh, and welcome to the party Vetinari! 4y
Chrys @khoiliha thank you for putting how I felt in words. Rincewind personally was fun to read, but the stories needed more details to feel complete 4y
hgrimes I was very into this book at the beginning and then it went in a direction that failed to hold my attention. There were still a lot of funny bits though. I‘m intrigued by the Luggage and hope we learn more about him later. tbh, Unseen University doesn‘t really remind me of Hogwarts outside of being a wizard school. Terry Pratchett is such a rockstar fantasy author though that it would surprise me if JKR wasn‘t in some ways influenced by him. (edited) 4y

DGRachel @Riveted_Reader_Melissa No worries. I was just posting this a favor to the original hostess, but I haven‘t read the book either. I tried Mort and bailed. I think Pratchett is either not for me or not for me at this time. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @DGRachel that‘s true with everything I think. I usually like his, but I have to be in the mood for it too. Lately I‘ve just overbooked myself so I‘m about two behind here...Mort and Sorcery now. Hopefully later this month I can carve out some time. 4y
julesG @DGRachel Are you suggesting that Pratchett is a "Marmite-Author"? https://youtu.be/JFLHialhZ8c 4y
DGRachel @julesG OMG!! That video! I‘m dying! I absolutely was not equating Sir Terry with Marmite. I‘m sure there‘s a middle ground with his work, but I think I‘m just not in the right frame of mind right now to appreciate his sense of humor. 4y
Laura317 @DGRachel I found that listening to them is more entertaining- especially those that feature The Watch and Death. If you have a library card, check out the audio sometime. Maybe then you will find them more to your taste? 4y
DGRachel @laura317 I may try that once I get through The Stand. Thanks for the recommendation! 4y
Chrys I am just at so-so for the book overall, but I believe I actually like Rincewind now. Like others I am finding that my mood plays a large part in how I feel about these books. So far Equal Rites has definitely been my favorite. 4y
julesG @Laura317 @DGRachel - agree, the audiobooks are very entertaining, even Rincewind is mildly funny on audio. 😵 4y

It was fun to return to Discworld and Rincewind, especially in a story I haven't read before, but I found parts of it a bit draggy. And while I know Rincewind is not exactly a hero in any of the stories, a lot of the story felt more obviously like it was happening around him rather than actually involving him (at least until the end). Still, I really enjoyed all the characters and humor as usual, and of course I'll continue reading.

For once I'm ahead of the #OokBOokClub game! Figured this would be a good book to start my vacation with.

I am shocked at how flippantly Rincewind is treated in these opening pages. I get that this is a comedy and joke is that he's bad at stuff, but the man's survival instinct is unparalleled and if he told me something was wrong I would listen and leave.
