this is one of those books that is good in itself but could be great with a cleaner execution 📚 I appreciate that a good part of this book is a commentary on mental illness treatment and financial issues in obtaining it. the blog posts are awkward to read (and sort of unnecessary?) but I think Tremblay captures the mundane parts of daily life from a child's POV pretty well. also, I don't mind the ending but I see why people dislike it.

The Ballad of Black Tom | Victor LaValle

I effectively read this in two sittings but WOW Lavalle's writing is excellent for such a short story 🤯 he manages to capture the unsettling Lovecraftian terror while also telling a compelling narrative about racism, empowerment and revenge.

catching up on some manga and starting another #novella to kick off the week ✌️ I'm not familiar with the Lovecraft story Black Tom is based on but I enjoyed another of Lavalle's books earlier this year (The Changeling) so I'm eager to dive in 😊

I really wanted to enjoy this book more but I think the format of the narrative (told through interview transcripts and journal entries) really dampened the experience 😩 it's unfortunate since the base concept of the story is absolutely fascinating (discovery of alien tech in the form of a giant robot) but it was tough to care about the characters and a lot of the action-y segments are muddled as a result.

there are aspects to Yoshimoto's writing I enjoy (people coping after the death of a loved one, finding amusement in mundane things, forging unexpected relationships) but the 1st story killed off the only interesting character + focused on a forced romance with 0 chemistry and the 2nd story mostly plodded along 😩 on top of that, I felt the translation job for this book was pretty stilted and amateurish

squeezing in this #novella real quick at my partner's insistence 🤔 I read one of Yoshimoto's books last year (Amrita) and had a love/hate relationship with it, so not sure what to expect from this.

Men At Arms | Terry Pratchett

it was nice seeing familiar and new faces back at the Night Watch in a murder mystery 😊 although I felt parts of this book kind of dragged and Pratchett is unfortunately one of those authors who struggles writing coherent action scenes. The unexpected death of a certain character towards the end made me surprisingly sad 😭

since I'm trying to tackle some of the older books on my #tbr stack, I also started Pages of Pain, though I'm expecting it to be on the wayside as I work through my book club book. 📚Apparently this is a #dungeonsanddragons spin-off book from the 90's that takes place in the Plainscape which I'm not very familiar with given how off-the-rails my DM's campaign currently is 😅

a lovely, atmospheric read 🐎 I was interested in this book initially because it was a partial retelling of the Vasilisa the Beautiful folktale but the book also explores Russian house and nature spirits, which I really enjoyed. Arden's writing style is reminiscent of classical writing but in a way that is palatable, and she articulates a setting that is both cozy and unsettling.

bit of a slow burn but a moving book 🍷Towles does an excellent job of not only writing charming, memorable characters but he also paints a very vivid picture of 1920's-50's Russia and the quaint life within the Metropol. I wasn't terribly familiar with the historical context of the book's setting but Towles provided some footnotes and general information to keep the reader afloat. 😊

Paperbacks from Hell | Grady Hendrix

this was a quick but interesting read 😊 I really enjoyed Hendrix's analysis of various pulp-y paperbacks though I wish parts of the books were organized better (history of horror fiction vs specific themes/recurring topics) and I would also love to hear more of Hendrix's recommendations for specific titles. Still, I enjoyed the analysis of the various time periods and how they influenced many of the books.

aaaaand my next #nightstand book 📚 honestly I just want to marathon Hendrix's stuff asap but my tbr stack is getting out of control 😭 so far this book has been awesome, with Hendrix detailing different cultural aspects from the time period that influenced various authors and I'm especially enjoying his spotlights on the cover artists in addition to the authors.

Honestly, I'm only familiar with Izzard because of his appearance on the Hannibal TV series but his narration is pretty hilarious especially when he tries to discuss his footnotes 😁

gonna be honest and say I feel like I'd enjoy this book more if I'd read it in middle or early high school BUT that being said it has some strong points. I really enjoyed Adeyemi's worldbuilding, setting, magic system, and integration of real-world social issues into parts of the plot 👍 the romance is pretty blah though, and the book doesn't feel like it picks up until the 2nd half 🤔

holy smokes what a fun read 🤘 I'm so thankful for Hendrix creating a female protagonist who is a) middle-aged, b) a former metal guitarist and c) not awkwardly forced into a romantic relationship with her ex-bandmates 😊 I did feel the ending was a bit rushed and I wish the other band members were fleshed out more but this was a good time all around.

Pickpick

to be honest I was pretty 'meh' about this book until about 2/3rds of the way in when it picks up significantly. I really like Crouch's take on multiverse concepts but the beginning of the book is a bit too fast and feels rushed. I also wish Jason was a bit more fleshed out as a protagonist (I'm supposed to care about him, right?). 🤔 still, I liked the ultimate message of the book and the ending genuinely surprised me.

finally done 🌸 I enjoyed Kuang's take on a military fantasy with a setting and worldbuilding inspired by Chinese mythos and historical events. however, the book has pacing problems (certain parts really drag) and the three major divisions of the story transition awkwardly. Rin seems to be a divisive protagonist, but her flaws are deliberate and make sense for her age, backstory and circumstances.

In the Valley of the Sun | Andy Davidson
post image
Pickpick

finished my first book for my upcoming book club meeting ☀️ I was a bit hesitant on this based on the premise but it's a solid horror read. Davidson excels at developing an unsettling atmosphere in the isolated areas of Texas and his take on vampires is delightfully creepy and monstrous. I did feel the attempts at procedural crime fiction are interesting but could be in a different, separate book.
