For #readingtheamericas2023 I chose this title to represent Brazil. I'm giving it a pick not because I loved the story...but because of how it's sticking with me. This one isn't going to be for everyone. It's a difficult story to describe in such a short amount of words. Very thought provoking. And the ending...sigh! @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

Resolving in 2023 to read at least a little bit every day, a habit which I abandoned for much of the last year or more. This bizarre novella was my first foray into Lispector and while I think my younger self would‘ve fallen in love with its seemingly intentional complexity and opacity & struggle with unanswerable questions, I still found much to enjoy here.

I cannot tell you the number of times I returned to and re-read the opening lines of this slim volume.

Like several others, I read The Hour of the Star for Brazil #FoodAndLit. Such a weird, thought-provoking little story... it made me sad a lot, made me laugh a little, and then that ending! My first Lispector, but I definitely want to read more. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #1001books

Then I made Galinhada and Pão de Queijo for dinner tonight. The cheese bread is awesome!

I‘d heard of Clarice Lispector before but never read anything by her. I was blown away by this short book: original, poetic, moving and ironic. It tells the story of Macabea, young woman “incompetent for life.” I‘ll be looking for more by Lispector, and hope you do too! #foodandlit #Brazil

An erratic, philosophical look of a woman who is very awkward in life. It was a quick read. I felt for Macabea. I have been in situations where I just didn't know how to act. But the ending. The translator‘s afterword to this novella includes the statement that “no matter how odd Clarice Lispector‘s prose sounds in translation, it sounds just as unusual in the original.” It was odd, and I don‘t know quite know how to describe it, but it was intriguing.

Supper tonight was delicious spicy Brazilian coconut chicken with rice and vegetables and brigadeiros.

I got a snow day today, so I moved up some of my weekend plans. I‘ve been prepping a couple Brazilian recipes and started this book. I‘m planning to continue later this evening.

Returned two books to the library this morning in the rain, this short novella being the first which while slight in bulk has, in the character of macabea, bewitched me as she appeared to have done with the narrator rodrigo. Definitely playing with the form of the novel i felt a little bit like the author was toying with my emotions. Definitely a book i will look to buy so i can reread and explore more of the authors work.

Meanwhile the clouds are white and the sky is all blue. Why so much God. Why not a little for men.

Clarice Lispector‘s prose is like nothing else! So much respect for her translators idk how they even try it... this is one of those books where I wasn‘t always completely sure what I was reading, but I got so immersed in her sentences and the ideas I didn‘t care about plot much at all! Lispector and Woolf are the only people who redeem modernism for me.

Reading The Hour of the Star right now & loving it 🖤

This is a strange one. I might need to have a fever to properly understand it. I‘m about a quarter of the way through and really curious to see where it‘s going.

May‘s #TBR #readingresolutions • Well into the tagged book and 🧡 it. The two Anita Brookner novels I pulled off the shelves at home and was surprised to find I got halfway through both - must‘ve been years ago. The Doris Lessing has been on my list for a while, while Lisa See has only recently come to my attention and I thought Snow Flower would be the perfect first read. Eileen Chang‘s also been sitting on the shelf too long 😊 #photochallenge

Rainy day vibes. More coffee brewing. In love with this book. Writing style reminds me of Marguerite Duras a bit.

...and as I write I‘m a bit surprised because I discover I have a destiny. Who hasn‘t ever wondered: am I a monster or is this what it means to be a person?

I'm far from well-versed in Brazilian literature, but I hear that Clarice Lispector is one best things about it 😊 I love this book but perhaps predictably where my favourites are concerned, it's not a feel-good or cheerful read 😆

Reading this novella made me feel like I was in a dream state, not because of the particular story told, but how Lispector chose to tell it. It reminded me more of poetry than prose- only 77 pages, but not a single sentence was wasted. How I obtained it is fitting: I had to climb a ladder, and even then struggled to reach it. For me, those experiences add to the mystique..I could wax on and get really corny, but I'll stop there... Just read it 😋

So, I've had to extend my stay in Russia a little longer since I chose The Idiot as my first book for #LitWorld2018GB challenge. But with this Strand #bookhaul , my itinerary is a little clearer- I'll be visiting Brazil, Nigeria, Japan and Italy for these. This book was more of a prose poem than a novel and if it had been a long book I probably would've gotten extremely frustrated with it. But everything in it was very sharp, and I can't help feeling curious about Lispector's other work.

Wanted to read a shorter book to gain ground with my "blog reading" but it backfired. I've been stalled at the last few pages of this book because I know I won't have time to review it when I've finished reading it. Gah.

Before this typist showed up in my life, I was a man who was even a bit contented, despite my meager success in literature. Things were somehow so good that they could go very bad because fully mature things rot.

I love characters reading books in novels and always try and hunt them down. One crime novel by val macdermid had a hero looking at his deceased dads bookshelf and the subsequent reads i found were great. This was mentioned in the sara baume book i was lauding yesterday and it looks really interesting but its not in library and at 96 pages i think ill be trying to find a 2nd hand version - anyone read it and is it worth the hunt!!!

The narrator, Rodrigo S. M., is the supposed author of this work. The central character of Rodrigo's tale is an eccentric impoverished typist named Macabea. Full of contradictions & concerns that mark this as postmodern & romantic (capital R). It is the emotional range & passages of sheer beauty that really makes this an astonishing work. I am hard-pressed to think of many other novellas that display such a range. An experimental character study.

So let those who read me get punched in the stomach to see if it's good. Life is a punch in the stomach.
