Chocolat
Chocolat | Joanne Harris
Even before it was adapted into the Oscar-nominated film starring Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp, Joanne Harris'New York Timesbestsellingnovel,Chocolatentranced readers with its mix of hedonism, whimsy, and, of course, chocolate. In tiny Lansquenet, where nothing much has changed in a hundred years, beautiful newcomer Vianne Rocher and her exquisite chocolate shop arrive and instantly begin to play havoc with Lenten vows. Each box of luscious bonbons comes with a free gift: Vianne's uncanny perception of its buyer's private discontents and a clever, caring cure for them. Is she a witch? Soon the parish no longer cares, as it abandons itself to temptation, happiness, and a dramatic face-off between Easter solemnity and the pagan gaiety of a chocolate festival. Chocolat's every page offers a description of chocolate to melt in the mouths of chocoholics, francophiles, armchair gourmets, cookbook readers, and lovers of passion everywhere. It's a must for anyone who craves an escapist read, and is a bewitching gift for any holiday.

#Winterwonderland #BloweNorthernWinde I haven‘t read the book but I remember that the North wind has a lot to do with when the mother and daughter move around in the movie. Also, I remember this part because in the background of Vianne telling her daughter about her grandfather, the song playing in the background is Eric Satie‘s Gnosiennes No.1. I‘m a sucker for a good score.

Loved this book. So many great themes. I actually watched the movie a couple years ago before reading the book...but the book‘s way better 😉 Vianne‘s skepticism toward Christianity resonated with me, and the more in-depth witchy themes were interesting. Only thing that annoyed me was her sleeping with Roux on Armande‘s last night and then getting pregnant at the very end when Josephine was officially with him then. So unnecessary.

A little bit of magic, good people, bad people, gypsies, little songs in French, an imaginary friend, love, loss, mystery and more chocolate drink than I could have imagined; this is a fascinating book.
The story alternates between the first person narratives of Vianne and Père Reynaud.

An aspect I really loved about this book was that the minor characters and the sub-plots were as 3-dimensional as the major ones

Just in time I finished my last #booktubeathon challenge, #3! I thought the two seconds of romance at the end was unnecessary, & the constant switching between past & present tense was distracting. Otherwise I loved everything about this book. 4.5⭐. I had seen the movie years ago & loved it, but now much of the movie seems like a watered-down failure in comparison to the book. There were several excellent aspects though. #projectTBR #projectnew
