Bookish and the Beast | Ashley Poston
34 posts | 34 read | 35 to read
A tale as old as time is made new in Ashley Poston's fresh, geeky retelling of Beauty and the Beast. Rosie Thorne is feeling stuckon her college application essays, in her small town, and on that mysterious General Sond cosplayer she met at ExcelsiCon. Most of all, shes stuck in her grief over her mothers death. Her only solace was her late mothers library of rare Starfield novels, but even that disappeared when they sold it to pay off hospital bills. On the other hand, Vance Reigns has been Hollywood royalty for as long as he can rememberwith all the privilege and scrutiny that entails. When a tabloid scandal catches up to him, he's forced to hide out somewhere the paparazzi would never expect to find him: Small Town USA. At least theres a library in the house. Too bad he doesnt read. When Rosie and Vances paths collide and a rare book is accidentally destroyed, Rosie finds herself working to repay the debt. And while most Starfield superfans would jump at the chance to work in close proximity to the Vance Reigns, Rosie has discovered something about Vance: hes a jerk, and she cant stand him. The feeling is mutual. But as Vance and Rosie begrudgingly get to know each other, their careful masks come offand they may just find that theres more risk in shutting each other out than in opening their hearts.

Once again, we are taken look into the life of a Starfield loving, book loving girl. When Rosie accidentally ruins a book, she ends up paying it off by organizing the massive library. Supposed to be helping her is Vance, who just happens to play the villain in the Starfield movies. He's also the mystery guy from a convention a few months back. Will they get along and find love?? This is a Beauty and the Beast retelling and I enjoyed it.

I‘m too cynical, too middle-aged for teen rom-coms. Even though most HEAs are on the cheesy side, this one felt unrealistic because they‘re 17/18 years old. Also, there‘s a lot of filler in this book—scenes from the fictional Starfield books, which I think I would‘ve preferred to read.

#roaringwolf me first (because I do normally like romance)
+ self-care because I also reread one of my faves from last year, The Happy Ever After Playlist

Just finished Bookish and the Beast! It was cute. Loved Rosie. She‘s so spunky and real. Setting this fairytale in a contemporary place & time is refreshing. #10 (9 were audiobooks - I have to read more print books!) #BookSpin #4 #BFC22 #ReadMyRoom #FAIRYTALECHALLENGE #SERIES2022 (finished this one) #Buzzwordathon July #READYOURSHELFCHALLENGE June #Pantone2022ColourChallenge CoralRose #WintersRespite #TheRoyalReadathon Thomas O‘Malley

Once Upon a Con does such a wonderful job portraying how fandom brings people together and helps them through life‘s hardest times. But there were some moments in this book that left me unsettled. Especially when one of the boys refused to take no for an answer from Rosie and continued to pester her throughout the book. #youngadult #LGBTQ

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Installment three in the #OnceUponaCon series. I haven‘t read book 2 yet (oops), but I enjoyed Geekerella. Anyway, this is a YA Beauty and the Beast retelling set amidst the Starfield fandom. It‘s a fun enough story, though the characters are a tad one-dimensional. High cheese factor, but a decent palette cleanser nonetheless.

Such a cute Beauty & the Beast “retelling”, and such a creative take, too. I loved the parts that got a little meta, and even the inventive takes on “Gaston” and such. Vance is friggin‘ adorable.

You know, I just really love these books. The first 2 were fabulous but this one, oh wow it was full of disney beauty and the beast references and canon novel cameos. As a huge fan of canon fiction, the idea of a library full of old trade paperbacks was just thrilling. So cute, so light, so fun. Just what I needed. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I finally got to the last book in the once upon a con series. I love how relatable the characters are and how they are tied to the excelsiCon. This book is obviously predictable, they all are but they are so sweet. This one takes a long time to get to the complication but I still loved it.

I wasn't a big fan of this one. On paper it sounded like something I'd love, but I found myself uninterested in the characters.

I did like the geekiness of the sci-fi movies and books that were used as part of the backstory.

I love rom coms, and when you apply a fairytale twist and then set them into a convention/nerd fandom theme? Perfection!

It was so fun to read Vance and Rosie‘s story, although so far, Mo and Ethan‘s is my favorite. I‘m hoping there will be more installments in this series!

I didn't jive with this book at all. Maybe it was that Geekerella was just so good it's hard to live up to. Maybe it was the fact that the convention was basically an afterthought. Maybe it's that modern Beauty and the Beast retellings are hard to do without making the Beast so awful you hate him. Maybe it's that I found this book utterly unforgettable.

Poston doesn‘t get nearly enough love. Her ability to take nerd culture and fairy tale themes and make fun, romantic, relatable characters enthralls me.

Miladygrimm @Chelleo the whole series is great. Nerdy culture and sweet romance. Way more diversity than romance novels usually get. 2y

THANK YOU. Why do so many ppl seem to put the apostrophe in the wrong place?! My biggest pet peeve is when specific decades are spelled as, for example, "the 90's."

'90s!! Yes!! This was so validating ?

MsMelissa Wow, I had no idea about this one! I‘ve taken several editing courses (I‘m not an editor, but do a lot of it in my job), and this has never come up. I‘m mentally filing this away for future reference. 2y
Ruthiella I did that for AGES before I knew it was wrong. 😱 2y
ShyBookOwl @Ruthiella @Book_Fiend_Melissa honestly, so many ppl do this that I was starting to think that I was living in the upside down world lol I'd even sometimes think I was missing some obscure grammar rule that only applies to decades lol I was like, "90's?? Why would the '90s be possessive?! Ahhh!" Lol that's why this was so validating 2y

Oof. I liked the rest of this series but this one was so far off the mark for me. None of the characters feel three dimensional and as a result the supposed chemistry between Vance and Rosie suffers. Having both their narrative POVs is not a substitution for actual character development and good dialogue on the page. Also, the prose is packed with even more geeky references than the first two which was distracting and sure to age this one fast.

The pop culture references blur the actual story. There is little to no back story. Who needs a back story when we've got a hot sexy villain, right? And the female MC has no sense of self-preservation. Also, the dog may destroy the rose bushes and whatnot, but a book (don't get me wrong, I treasure books) - a book - is the lever to get this Beauty and the Beast retelling rolling?
