Royal Assassin (the Illustrated Edition)
Royal Assassin (the Illustrated Edition) | Robin Hobb
136 posts | 191 read | 8 reading | 82 to read
In hardcover for the first time ever! A richly illustrated anniversary edition from the beloved Farseer Trilogy, hailed by George R. R. Martin as "fantasy as it ought to be written," and Lin-Manuel Miranda as "an incredible series." FitzChivalry Farseer and the Fool are back again in book two of the beloved saga, full of adventure, magic, and sinister plots. A quarter-century after the original publication of the Farseer Trilogy, these special editions present Robin Hobb's modern classics as never before: in gorgeous hardcover editions, with ten beautiful full-color illustrations by Magali Villeneuve. As Royal Assassin begins, Fitz has survived his first hazardous mission as king's assassin, but is left little more than a cripple. Battered and bitter, he vows to abandon his oath to King Shrewd and to remain in the distant mountains. But love and events of terrible urgency draw him back to the court at Buckkeep, and into the deadly intrigues of the royal family. Renewing their vicious attacks on the coast, the Red-Ship Raiders leave burned-out villages and demented victims in their wake. The kingdom is also under assault from within, as treachery threatens the throne of the ailing king. In this time of great danger, the fate of the kingdom may rest in Fitz's hands--and his role in its salvation may require the ultimate sacrifice.

🌟🌟🌟🌟.5

More like 4.5 🌟

This was way better than book one! The world building and characters are well drawn out, a bit more clarity with the magic system in this second installment. I think i am beginning to understand it better. I learned nothing more about the red ships.

With all that said, I love love love Nighteyes, the wolf and his character has upped the whole story for me. The last 150 pages also were incredible.

I read the Mad Ship trilogy a few years back and found them brilliant... Also enjoyed the rain wild chronicles. I guess this trilogy didn't quite meet my expectations... Although really good in terms of the world created and connecting with all of the characters, I felt it quite drawn out and it took me really long to finish. Glad I read them though!

What an amazing story. Although it took me a month to read this book, due to lack of time but I thoroughly enjoyed every page when I took out time to read it. Ending was super. We get to see Fitz grow up to be a big built man here 💪 and his anger episodes were very satisfying. Some action from him was what I was waiting for 😜. Love his relationship with Nighteyes and looking forward to more of their adventures together in the next book.

That was so intense! Edge of the seat, couldn‘t look away, finger nail bitting stuff.

Book 2 in the series and the characters have developed beautifully: The villains are absolutely despicable and I hate some of them with a violent passion! The heroes are flawed and realistic, but extremely likeable - totally cheering for them every step of the way.
The plot is intricate and intriguing.

Can‘t wait to dive into the third book of the series.

There are a lot of herbs, teas and tinctures in this book - so here‘s my Vitality Tea with Rooibos.

This is a great instalment in the Farseer trilogy - but man was it stressful being in the midst of Buckkeep during all the political intrigue, warfare and villainy. I feel exhausted! The characters are SO good though and the two types of magic are fascinating. 🌟🌟🌟🌟⬇️

Centique I like a fantasy where the “chosen one” doesn‘t get some godlike power gifted on a plate but has to struggle as hard as anyone else - and, by god, Fitz surely struggles. Will be excited to get to the final one - but I need to recover first 2y

The middle book of a trilogy is, for me, the make or break instalment. This had a few wobbly moments but on the whole it basically made sure the hook of the first book was firmly embedded! It was a little slow to get up to speed, had a fair bit of recap & the action is pretty much confined to a single location but it was soon back to the familiar convoluted intrigues of the Farseer family. Love the Fool - such a fascinating character ... cont. ⬇️

readingjedi ...and I was absolutely delighted by the relationship between Fitz & Nighteyes. Love that it isn't just magic, elves, wizards and dragons type fantasy though of course there are elements of those traditional tropes. The Skill, the Wit & the inscrutable Red Ship Raiders are all well thought out, subtle & thought provoking. 3y

The Farseer Trilogy | Robin Hobb

This summer I have been mostly reading Robin Hobb's Farseer trilogy. Not exaggeration - I feel like it took the entire season to get through it!

But now I've finished it & I feel that, after being so immersed in & absorbed by the world of the Six Duchies, I've been unceremoniously dumped back in the real world and with an unpleasant void in my reading life to boot.

TrishB It‘s a great series. 3y

Back from Kos - where I read for approximately zero minutes as going on holiday with a 5 year old is hard work & not really at all relaxing. Gone are the days of reading 6 books a week while sat in a leafy taverna sipping ouzo. Cue 14 days of wrestling with a bottle of sunscreen & a recalcitrant child.

So am finally on to volume 2 of this trilogy. Which I'm enjoying & is helping to reduce my stress level.

SamanthaMarie Hahaha this is all too real. Just replace 5 year old with 4 year old 🤦🏼‍♀️ these kiddos 😅 3y
saresmoore What an excellent synopsis of traveling with young children! 😆 3y
Lucy_Anywhere Hahaha! I'm on holiday with a 15 month old - trying to stop him eating sand, changing nappies in all sorts of awkward places, and bribing him with sweet potato chips whenever we want to sit down with a pint 😂 3y
Smrloomis 😂 hope you get a little ouzo and relaxation in there somewhere - but it‘s pretty tough. I don‘t know how people do it with - especially with three or more 🤔😱🤷🏻‍♀️ (edited) 3y

Second in her Farseer Trilogy sees our young hero Fitz growing up, falling in love, bonding with a wolf (well, we've all done it) and getting ever more mired in the nasty doings at court as his erstwhile protectors the King and Prince Verity are being out-manouevered by evil Prince Regal (boo, hiss). Slow-moving, maybe, but strangely compelling.
