The little one is on summer break and is doing everything to refuse reading. Her and reading just don‘t get along right now and it frustrates her and makes her want to stay away from it. But Graphic Novels keep her attention, they are fun to read and look at. This is why I will ALWAYS advocate that graphic novels are BOOKS! If it gets her reading that‘s all I care about! Graphic Novels are Books!!

wanderinglynn Who says graphic novels or comic books don‘t count as books? It‘s in their titles: “novels” & “books”! 17h
Sweetkokoro @wanderinglynn I have actually seen a few people here on litsy who do not believe they count as books. And have encountered many others in person. I agree it‘s in their titles! What bugs me most is when these same people say Picture books are worthwhile books because of their targeted age range. Meanwhile believe GN are not even though they are basically the same thing!! 16h
LibrarianRyan Amen!! Has she tried Cucumber Kingdom yet? If she can do Hilda she can do Cucumber. 16h
See All 9 Comments
Sweetkokoro @LibrarianRyan No she has not done that one! I will see if my library has it and get it for her. She loves Hilda! 16h
LibrarianRyan @Sweetkokoro it‘s 2 or four books long. It‘s very cute and full of girl power even though the boy is disposed to be the “hero”. And so much tongue in cheek with names, play on words etc. love this series. 16h
Sweetkokoro @LibrarianRyan Ah it sounds so fun to read, I just checked and my library has 3 volumes of it, so once we are done with Hilda we will be checking it out! Thanks for the recommendation! 16h
LibrarianRyan @Sweetkokoro while I‘m at it because I can‘t seem to stop. Geeky fab five. It‘s a new series. Book 1 is out and book 2 is due any time. Also Cardboard Kingdom. Plus if you have any desire to start weening her onto others maybe try Baby Mouse or DragonBreath or Lunch Lady, or Squib. These are not really GN but close. They are a nice bridge between the two. 16h
Sweetkokoro @LibrarianRyan I will be checking my library for all of those as well. She has read Baby Mouse, and all of Diary of A Wimpy Kid, and Dork Diaries, she is currently working on Stick Dog and Stick Cat. I agree they are a good Bridge between the two. But right now she is just losing that will to want to read so GN are my go to, short and fun, not a lot of pressure but enough to keep her mind going. I appreciate this so much! 15h
LibrarianRyan @Sweetkokoro I so get it. Good luck. 🍀👍🏻 15h

I have been listening to this #audiobook for 3 hours non-stop now and it‘s amazing. I love how it switches back and forth between current timeline and past time line. It doesn‘t get messy at all, it‘s clean and seamless between the timelines. You learn about the present situation of the Robots and the Start of the Robots all at the same time but it never feels overwhelming! This is how you blend multiple timelines!

GrilledCheeseSamurai Good to hear. I have this book in my tbr pile but haven't gotten to it yet. 🤷‍♂️ 1d
Sweetkokoro @GrilledCheeseSamurai It‘s one I had been contemplating starting and decided to just dive into it and I‘m glad I did. It‘s very well written and so engrossing, the world building and storytelling is spectacular, but the seamless timeline jumps are what really help pull it together for me! Hopefully you will enjoy it when you get to it! 1d

Norse Mythology | Neil Gaiman

Day 23: “N”
I bring to you all a two-fer for the letter N, Neil Gaiman‘s Norse Mythology.
I have yet to read it but it features two of my favorite things. Gaiman and Norse Mythology haha. I‘m excited to see his spin on the tales. What is everyone else‘s take on this particular book? (and yes I own a Mjolnir keychain as I love Thor, granted it is MCU version and not old Norse version)

I love this feature about Libby, I‘m glad it gives me an estimate about how long it will be before I get this audio book. But 8 weeks is SOOOOOOO LONG. A small part of me hopes some will cancel their holds but I doubt it. Hopefully when it comes it will have been worth the wait. I love listening to Gaiman read his own stories. It just can‘t come soon enough.

LibrarianRyan These hold lists always go faster. It‘s a mathematical equation based on the number of holds and check out time. If the library has a limit on the number you can check out at once, most will turn it in the minute they are done to free up room for more. 2d
Louise Oh! Neverwhere is worth the wait! It‘s my favorite to listen to from Gaiman. I bought it in Audible so I could listen to it countless times. Libby is great, though. If it‘s any consolation, my wait for the new Maisie Dobbs Book is 15 weeks! 2d
Sweetkokoro @LibrarianRyan that‘s great info to know thanks, but it seems to be a slow process for my particular branch. I put the hold in two weeks ago and it said 10 weeks then. So it‘s not moving very fast haha. I overheard a few ladies at the library once say they hold on to their audiobooks for the whole duration to get the most out of it, even if they finished it. :/ which was weird to me haha. 2d
See All 10 Comments
Sweetkokoro @Louise ouch that‘s a very long wait time! I hope it moves quickly for you. So far The Graveyard Book is my absolute favorite to listen to by Gaiman, I‘m working my way through a lot but I noticed Neverwhere is pretty popular so I‘m so looking forward to it, that‘s why this is wait is killing me haha. 2d
Louise @Sweetkokoro The crazy thing is that I accidentally requested the e-book at first and waited 2 or 3 months for that. When I realized my mistake, I requested the audio, so the wait will have been almost half a year by the time I get it! Anticipation! I loved The Graveyard Book too. And The Ocean at the End of the Lane and others, but there‘s something truly special about Neverwhere. You‘ll love it! (edited) 2d
Sweetkokoro @Louise Omg that‘s insane, I don‘t think I have the patient for that kind of waiting haha, you are strong willed! I haven‘t listened to The Ocean at the End of the Lane but I did read it, it‘s another on my radar for audiobooks. You have me more excited now to listen to Neverwhere, I hope it comes quickly haha. 2d
Louise I think “patience” is aided by all the great books to read/listen to in the meantime! There‘s another story of Gaiman‘s that I adore. He wrote a story that is about Sherlock Holmes‘s last case, in which he travels the world in search of the “fountain of youth”. He figures out that he can create an elixir of youth with the help of special bees in the mountains of China. The story is brilliant and is included in Trigger Warning. Enjoy Neverwhere! 2d
LibrarianRyan @Sweetkokoro the us weird. 2d
Sweetkokoro @Louise ahh I haven‘t read Trigger Warning yet. But it‘s on my TBR, I will keep a listen out for that particular story. 2d
Louise 👍 Enjoy! 2d

Day 18: #uglycover
This was a little hard for me as I am going to admit im a cover person. I pick a lot of books based on covers, which I know I shouldn‘t but I can‘t help it. This book was actually recommended to me by an employee at B&N and frankly if I had ever seen it myself on the shelf I wouldn‘t have given it two seconds of my time. So suffice to say it‘s my ugliest cover haha.
#30junebooks

Eyelit That‘s a pretty awful cover for an awesome book! 7d
Sweetkokoro @Eyelit You have read this?!? This is first book I have ever bought off an employee recommendation and it sounds like a crazy trip, but fun at the same time. 7d
Eyelit I read it years ago and really enjoyed it. Be prepared for banana pants zaniness though. The sequel wasn‘t as good, but still a fun read. 6d
Sweetkokoro @Eyelit She also said the sequel wasn‘t good and to treat this like a standalone because of that reason haha. Sounds like I‘m in for a wild ride when I finally get around to starting it. 6d

Crenshaw | Katherine Applegate

Pickpick

This book gave me so many Totoro feels whenever Crenshaw was around. But it also could have used more Crenshaw. The amount of time we are given to get to know and understand Crenshaw was very small, but the overall story was great, you follow a young boy who‘s family is losing everything again. The boy is trying to deal with it but has a hard time expressing himself. It‘s a bittersweet story and written so well. I adore Applegate‘s storytelling.

This short story was a trip. Anarchist squatters who have taken over an abandoned town in some post war US, summon a 3 antlered deer spirit protector to solve their problem of some guy gaining to much power, but of course things go awry. The main girl wants answers to her friends sudden suicide and learns more then she probably wanted. There was also Lots of LGBT rep in this book which was very nice.

This was an interesting read for me. You follow a P.I who is hired by an 11 year old to kill his step dad. There are alien/monster creatures living in this world taking over humans. A very dark atmosphere and very compelling. Others compare it to H.P Lovecraft, I can‘t since I will be honest I have NEVER read Lovecraft. But if you have this might be right up your alley.

Alright so I got smart and decided to jump into Percy Jackson and oh I loved this way more than the Apollo Trials. The writing tone is completely different from this series to the latest series. This has a much more mature feel to it with no cringy jokes which I appreciate so much. The monsters were great, the story pacing perfect. I can‘t wait to read the rest of it. I did cry at one point and I appreciate a book that can make me cry.

So I just discovered the world of sci-fi/fantasy Novellas. Why did no one tell me when I was asking for short stories to look for these?!?!

I‘m not big into stories about Robots, I‘m still iffy on them, but this story was great. I loved Murderbot and his consistent annoyance with the humans. He is lazy and just wants to watch tv, let him watch his tv!! Also I loved when he started calling them “his humans” I can‘t wait to read the rest!

rretzler This was a good one, wasn‘t it? Love Murderbot! Have you checked out Tor.com? They have a lot of short spec fic to download for free and if you sign up (free) for the ebook club, you get a free ebook every month (really good, well-known authors) 3w
Sweetkokoro @rretzler It was so good! I just learned about Tor yesterday but I did not know about all of that. I will make sure to sign up for their e-book club. Thank you for the info! Hunting down short stories in the fantasy/ sci-fi genre has been so difficult. Tor might just be my answer! 3w
rretzler Also look at the Baen website. It is another spec fic publisher and also has short stories available and some books as well, although if I remember correctly you have to hunt a bit to find the books. 3w

Sweetkokoro @rretzler oh I have never heard of that site, thank you so much, I will make sure to look into it! I appreciate the help! 3w

They have lots and lots of lists, information and challenges and I think there are also links to free books. They‘re currently undergoing some changes in their hosting provider so they‘re down a little bit but be patient because it‘s a wonderful website! 3w
Sweetkokoro @rretzler oh another site I have never heard of! I will keep it on my radar to check out when they are done dealing with their changes. Sci-fi/fantasy is my favorite genre so this site is right up alley! Thank you again! 3w

My favorite character gets introduced in this one, he is a talking bird and that it is all I‘m saying on that! The art reverts back to the same style as the first volume in this one and from then on stays consistent. We start to get a bit more involved with her relationship with her mother and how Hilda is dealing with living in a town and not a forest anymore. Her relationship with her mother feels real (it‘s not always happiness), & I love that

The art starts to appear a little different in this volume but still holds that magical feeling. The story of the giants was so absolutely sweet, I loved it in the show and the book held the same feelings.

Hilda and the Troll | Luke Pearson

This was such an adorable children‘s graphic novel. Hilda is a sweet girl who is out to befriend every magical creature you could possibly think of. The is is the first volume, the story is pretty short but that‘s all right, the art is cute and the coloring really helps set the moods for panels. If you watched the Netflix show and loved it, I‘d hope you‘d love the books too. The show filled the story out more but didn‘t stray to far.

Book two done and once again im not fully impressed. I still like the self centered attitude Apollo has but I do like that he is realizing everything isn‘t about him. I loved Leo but cringed every time he said “mamacita” 😣I like that Calypso was brought in. And once again Meg annoyed the heck out of me. The story was mildly entertaining, but I do like how well Riordan knows his mythology, and that‘s what‘s keeping me going now.

Stopped by Half Priced Books today to seen if anything caught my attention for their sale. Picked up these three, i am familiar with McCaffreys world of Pern but haven‘t read this one yet, the other two just sounded interesting and were $1 each so I grabbed them.

I have been looking for standalone fantasy books for awhile, if any of you have recommendations for such please let me know!

Here I am once again reading Rick Riordans book completely out of order. I thought “hey this about Norse gods it won‘t connect to PJO”.. it connects lol. But not by a lot, at least for the first book. I actually enjoyed this so much, Norse God‘s are my fav and I enjoyed these versions of them. Also I was glad the parentage of Magnus wasn‘t predictable, the banter the characters had was actually funny. Only down side was Sam she annoyed me so bad.

Sweetkokoro Also I forgot to mention i am now 4 hours into #24b4monday let‘s see how far I get this time. Although my stopwatch on my phone reset, so I lost that initial 4 hour marker :( 1mo

Look what showed up in the mail today! I have never read The Wheel of Time series and I kept hearing so many great things about it here on litsy, so naturally I had to jump into it. While I do love the original covers, I really liked this one too. Plus I‘m not a huge fan of mass paperback, so I opted for this larger softback. I won‘t start it just yet but I am excited!

Call me silly but I probably should have read all the other series prior to this one haha. I have heard of Percy Jackson I never read his series & I didn‘t think they would constantly reference from Percy‘s series but it does. For its targeted age range I can see why it‘s popular, but for me there was just to many real world references that just got annoying. Apollo is well written though, Meg was flat & annoying for me. I‘ll keep reading though.

Shley9225 Wow, when I read this I didn‘t notice that it referenced PJO that much 😂 I actually thought it did a pretty good job of standing alone but that‘s just me apparently 1mo
Shley9225 And also 😱😱😱 you HAVEN‘T read PJO yet? *gasp* 1mo
Sweetkokoro @Shley9225 haha no I haven‘t you think I would have since I love tales around the gods haha. I did put in a hold for it at my library hopefully I‘ll have it soon. And yah it kept references people and events and I was like “ummmmm okay” haha. Maybe it felt more Stand alone for you since you read the prior works haha. 1mo
Shley9225 @Sweetkokoro Probably ? those books were my childhood, so it would be like referencing Pokémon—commonplace knowledge! And ahh I‘m so excited can‘t wait to hear what you think :D 1mo
Sweetkokoro @Shley9225 I was in my last year of high school when the first PJO was released so it missed my radar haha. But I‘m actually excited to read it, I‘ll definitely make sure to post my thoughts! 1mo

Wishtree | Katherine Applegate

Pickpick

”And if all you hear is the whisper of leaves, don‘t worry. most trees are introverts at heart.”

Katherine Applegate truly has a way with words. The story is seen through the eyes of a Tree, a Wishtree to be exact. And that right there was such a nice change from human or animal pov. She knows how to take complex conversations and make them simple for kids to understand. This a beautiful book about learning acceptance.

I decided to check on my reading goal that Alanni (my daughter for those who don‘t know, she is 10) set for me this year and I‘m glad Goodreads in kind enough to let me know I am behind schedule haha XD I got some serious reading to get to if I plan on making my goal. But the last time I did the math, I figured I would need to read about 17 books a month to hit this mark XD my child is ambitious to say the least.
#readingchallenge

Lady_Tigana_20 I do most of my reading at night because I can‘t get much reading done during day due to my three year old. My Goodreads Challenge has inched up over the years to 40. No way I could read 150 books unless I used his picture books. 😂 Good luck! Happy reading. 😄📚 1mo
rretzler @Lady_Tigana_20 A book is a book...I say count them all. 😁 1mo
Sweetkokoro @Lady_Tigana_20 I do most of my reading at night as well due to work. Alanni said she gave me this goal because she knows I read a lot of comics and I can get through about 10 a day or more if I really get sucked into a story haha. So she purposely aimed it higher to account for that. Smart thinking on her part, but I wanted this year to be more books and less comics haha. 1mo

This is my small collection of Anime Funkos, they are kind of hard to find at my local places. So we have Sailor Jupiter, Bulbasaur both small and big I love him to death! Colossal Titan and Armored Titan (I love them two and that‘s it haha) Dead Yamacha (he was a convention exclusive) and Ace D. Portgas from One Piece.

bullbunny Aww he is dead? I thought he was sleeping. They're all so cuute! Of the first 3 pokemon. Squirtle is my choice. But I only have a water bottle of him and his evolved. But definitely bulbasaur is adorable 1mo
Sweetkokoro @bullbunny yah it was a special Yamcha they made and the box even says Dead Yamcha on it. It‘s kind of funny if you familiar with DBZ and the fandom. Aww Squirtle is adorable too he would be my 2nd pick! I have always been a grass Pokémon lover though haha. 1mo
bullbunny @Sweetkokoro Yeah I know DBZ up till the point of of the dude stamping M's on people's heads. But I haven't continued since then 1mo

100 pages into book 3 of the Broken Empire Trilogy, so far only one chapter has been really boring but it‘s still living up to what I have been loving with the other two books. Time to find out if Jorg will get what is aiming for! And how everything else will unfold

Also so far my man Makin is still good, again I will rage if something happens to him.
