Dead Wednesday | Jerry Spinelli
post image
Mehso-so

A creepy idea that doesn‘t really hit that scare factor, but still interesting. Worm is celebrating Dead Wednesday where he has to “be dead” for a day and is ignored by everyone at school (weird tradition) only he gets the actual ghost of his assigned dead person attached to him. Main take away lessons are live life and don‘t wallow in self pity. A fast read with a Weird idea with some cute moments sprinkled in

3rd book in the Seven Swords novella series and it just keeps getting better! This is fast paced and full of action and the twist to the murder mystery left me impressed! Ryan‘s imagination really shines in this series and he found that sweet spot to make the novella feel like a full story without the length!

Fantastic this was full of heartbreak, fear, unknown secrets & world that is brimming full of fascinating & enchanting life. The end left me stunned & heartbroken & I need book 3 now! This series is amazing it‘s selfpub & deserves all the praise. There are anthropomorphic Birds! I love it. Also this has disability rep with Nella, who is deaf & Bruno worked with members of the community to make sure she was properly portrayed & she is darling!

A dark and creepy tale that set my heart pounding. It‘s 40 pages long and I think free on kindle but so worth it. It has a melancholy end with a bit hope sprinkled in but I enjoyed that as it shows not everything can be solved instantly.

A decent debut but unfortunately I was not blown away like other readers. It really lacked a lot of depth to the character relationships. It has elements that are intriguing and it‘s very well written, it just didn‘t have that extra edge to really make me fall in love. I will pick up book 2 & see how it goes when it releases

I‘m going to marry Hadrian.
I loved this. The simplicity of the story with the classic tropes & the banter between Hadrian & Royce makes it so enjoyable.
A great pick for those who want to move out of YA fantasy but are worried about difficult worldbuilding & heavy politics, this has both but it‘s not overwhelming, and it‘s fun!

This is full of some of the most enchanting creatures I have come across in sci-fi. Bruno‘s imagination is like no other. The world is beautiful, the creatures unique, and the story enthralling. Full of action and heartbreak, In the Orbit of Sirens is one my favorite reads this year!

An interesting tale of a detective trying to solve an old case, it flips back and fourth between present and past. The beginning is a little bit hard to understand due to the character designs of the the two mains looking way to similar but once you figure out how to see the differences it allows for better enjoyment. The fun was watching these harden men respect and care for the cats at the local bar!

It‘s not in the database but Karik‘s First Battle is a self published short story. Bleak lands, death at every corner & a dragon to take down. Karik‘s story is just beginning & this is a great start. Oliver gave just enough to the tale but left much more to learn about who Karik is and why he is a man no one ever speaks of. Full review on my blog

Taran Wanderer | Lloyd Alexander
post image
Pickpick

A whole book about Taran wandering Prydain trying to find out his parentage, but learning so much more along the way. This has a lot of growth for Taran, the lesson he learned that I loved most was that “even he is capable of horrible thoughts but how he acts after those thoughts are who he truly desires to be” it‘s presented & taught that it‘s human nature to think in both “good & evil” but how we act in response to them is the important aspect.

Sweetkokoro While this one may have been full of a ton of “side-quests” for Taran, I felt they were important as each one helped Taran learn and grow and understand who he wants to be . I was sad that it was the 2nd book in a row with no Eilonwy but I understand why she wasn‘t present as this is all about Taran and his growth. 7mo
Moonprismpower I haven‘t read his series or author. Is it a book I could read without having read the others? 7mo
Sweetkokoro @Moonprismpower Alexander himself in his author notes (in each book) says that he wrote Prydain as both self contained chronicles and a story in a larger pattern. So I would say it‘s safe to read it by itself. This is specifically focused on Taran and even with what you learn if you start there and go back I feel it would be fine, each book really does stand well on its own. 7mo

So far my least favorite of the series. I thought I was gonna get a nice story centered around Eilonwy and instead got Taran running around the forest for majority of the book and her being nonexistent in the whole story until the end when she does appear and her will is completely stripped of her, zero signs of that strong willed girl from the two earlier books. Just a let down to be honest.

imyril I enjoyed this one as a kid, but as an adult it's my least favourite too - it feels like lots of railroading characters to do things for plot convenience and sells Eilonwy short. That said: it brings back Achren - I'm always here for Achren :) 7mo
Sweetkokoro @imyril I can‘t get into liking Achren and it‘s probably due to there never been enough of her in the stories. This one really got sidetracked and focused way to much on Taran and his “lost in the woods and being angry with Prince Rhun” bit. Definitely the most disappointing so far for me. 7mo
imyril @Sweetkokoro fair. I‘ll be curious to see what you make of Taran Wanderer! 7mo

I actually enjoyed this one way more then the first book. The quest was enjoyable and there was so many new characters. The villain surprised me because I completely forgot about them since they are nonexistent most of the story haha. There was actual deaths, and the end with Islimach the horse left me shook, I was not expecting that.

imyril It feels much more grown up in some of its themes - I'm never getting over my crush on or grief for Adaon (or my delight in Orwen, Orgoch and Orddu). 7mo
Sweetkokoro @imyril oh my heart broke over Adaon. I was actually really invested in Ellidyr‘s downward spiral, he started out nasty but then over time you realized he was just desperate for recognition in a world we‘re he felt he had no chance. 7mo
imyril @Sweetkokoro oh gosh yes, Ellidyr is fascinating - I love how layered some of the characters are 7mo

This really could have benefited from being cut down from its 600 page mark. Nothing exciting happens until the last 20% of the book. Everything else was just stretched out politics and mindless squabbles between the characters. Oh and of course some random unnecessary romance. The cliffhanger though was shocking.

Another amazing installment in The Murderbot Diaries. Murderbot is back with their snarky inner dialogue, there is a murder that must be solved (and Murderbot is being petty and wants to solve it before the humans they have to work with) not a lot of action but the one fight scene more than makes up for it with how well it‘s done.

Hitting US stores tomorrow! but I had an ARC & while I struggled with the beginning & the middle the end was captivating. This is reminiscent of the first book as well. The one thing that bothered me most was every persons inability to answer Michaels questions, they are the reason he does stupid stuff. This is the sequel to The Kingdom of Liars but felt like a stand-alone due to the mystery style plot line & little connections to the first book.

Sweetkokoro It‘s either a book you will power through or will drop. It hovers around a 3.5-4 star for me but I‘m really invested in the moon plot line so I‘ll be sticking it out for the 3rd book (edited) 8mo

This is so far from my usual read. I got it as a gift from a friend and thought it was a supernatural ghost book...

It is not.

It‘s about a cult commune and it‘s absolutely horrid and abusive leader. It‘s spilt in 3 parts, part 1 was the most enthralling and kept me captivated. Part 2 was a slog and part 3 finally answered the question from the end of part 1. It was a little vague at times but I really enjoyed this.

Sweetkokoro My word might not be the best to go on though as this isn‘t my preferred genre so I have no others like it to compare it too but I really feel this was well written, it was dark, tense and very troubling at times to read. It has child abuse and serious brain washing, but I feel the story was well crafted and kept me in a state of horror. 8mo

If you want a more detailed reason as to why it‘s on my goodreads (link in bio) but basically it‘s slow, boring, I hated every character and all the women up to the point I had read to where treated like shit and I had this hangover feeling of a possible rape to happen at any moment which made it uncomfortable. My first ever Star Wars book and it wasn‘t bad at all, it wasn‘t amazing either but I did enjoy it and it was compelling enough to keep me reading. Karr was a fun character, talk about Jedi fanboy!! Ah my first dive into the star wars books. I have always been hesitant to read them, I have seen all the movies but I want to learn more and met other characters. I‘m about 5 chapters in so far and I am liking Karr, but the storytelling feels more middle grade and not YA like it‘s says it is. But we shall see as I continue. Any Star Wars books I should look for? I already own Light of the Jedi from the new High Republic line.
