I read this on June 8th and gave it 3.5 ⭐️ on Good Reads. If anyone questions how we can form great friendships online with people we haven‘t met, refer them to this book. It‘s a collection of letters between Helene Hanff and the staff at a bookstore in London that starts in 1949 and lasts for 20 years.

Really enjoyed this witty and warm book, the correspondence between an American writer and the staff of Marks & Co, an antiquarian bookshop in London, spanning over two decades.

I‘m going to be in London next weekend for a show and I may have a bit of time to putter around Stratford on the Sunday.
Anything you littens can recommend I do if I do get the time?

Susannah Is it too late? In Stratford, I really recommend the house where Shakespeare was born on Henley Street, and the church where he and his family are buried, Church of the Holy Trinity. Have a wonderful time! (edited) 1mo
Weaponxgirl @Susannah that‘s perfect! Thankyou 😊 I go down tomorrow and hopefully I‘ll get some time on the Sunday to do this. 1mo
Susannah Wonderful! I did want to add that there is a charge for entry at both places. The house is associated with the Birthplace Trust, and the church is its own entity because it‘s an active parish. Both have websites if you want to look in advance. 1mo
Weaponxgirl I never mind a fee as long as they aren‘t excessive. It obviously takes time and money to preserve these places. Thankyou again 1mo

Some more #shelflove from my library, this time it‘s part of the front of my #MountTBRStacksOfDoom Since my health crashed awhile ago, it‘s been hard to keep my library organised. Our last child moved out almost 2 months ago so I‘m currently working on the hubby to let me put a corner bookcase in her old room for my TBR Overflow. The rate I read usually, I should have about 3yrs worth of books to get through, my problem is letting them go after!

A neat little volume of actual letters between American writer Helene Hanff and the employees of British bookshop between 1949 and 1969. Sometimes funny, sometimes heartening, sometimes sad. She didn't publish all the letters, so there are few gaps where previous letters are referenced that aren't included, but overall it was an interesting read

This was easily the funniest book that I‘ve read in quite some time! I found that, over the course of reading the letters in it, I came to feel like I knew each of the people writing them. If you enjoy epistolary books, put this one at the top of your reading list. Highly recommended!!

I did some #audiopaperwork this morning and finished listening to 84, Charing Cross Road! I loved the wittiness and somewhat irreverent tone of Hélène‘s letters and the replies she received from London. The fact that the whole situation revolves around books didn‘t hurt either. The ending was bittersweet, but it did not change my feelings about this correspondence. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Mehso-so

Unpopular opinion, but I found this book to be bland and predictable. A friendship that grew through ongoing correspondence, this is a collection of letters, full of obscure book requests and the quirky friendship that blossomed. I like that this is the type of book that can be appreciated by a book lover. I also appreciate how it was retold from a real life correspondence. I have a few friends that started as pen pals and see this as a dying art.

Zelma I adore this little book but I also love that readers can have so many different opinions. 6mo

I just adored this book, and can‘t believe I haven‘t read it before. The first part is a series of letters between Helene in NYC and the titular bookshop in London, spanning 20 years from the late 1940s, then in the early 1970s we hear Helene‘s account of her first ever visit to London, a place she has loved from afar. Maybe one of my favourites of the year....

PS Thanks to @jenniferw88 for the cute penguin card included in the picture.

What a cute book about a handful of people, who never met one another, that lived in the US and in England. They wrote cute, humorous, and bookish letters back and forth, which made me giggle and smile throughout the entire book 😊

Makes me wish I could‘ve been around during that time to visit the bookstore on 84, CCR.

I absolutely loved this. I hadn‘t realized it was nonfiction—a collection of actual letters exchanged between the writer Helene Hanff in New York, and the staff of a secondhand bookshop in London. I loved the interplay and growing friendship between Hanff and her book-providers, as well as the glimpses the letters give of post-WWII London. This is bookish and wonderful in every way, confirming my belief that bookish people are the best people.
