Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil | John Berendt
Read John Berendt's Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil in Large Print.* All Random House Large Print editions are published in a 16-point typefaceShots rang out in Savannah's grandest mansion in the misty, early morning hours of May 2, 1981.Was it murder or self-defense?For nearly a decade, the shooting and its aftermath reverberated throughout this hauntingly beautiful city of moss-hung oaks and shaded squares.John Berendt's sharply observed, suspenseful, and witty narrative reads like a thoroughly engrossing novel, and yet it is a work of nonfiction.Berendt skillfully interweaves a hugely entertaining first-person account of life in this isolated remnant of the Old South with the unpredictable twists and turns of a landmark murder case.It is a spellbinding story peopled by a gallery of remarkable characters: the well-bred society ladies of the Married Woman's Card Club; the turbulent young redneck gigolo; the hapless recluse who owns a bottle of poison so powerful it could kill every man, woman, and child in Savannah; the aging and profane Southern belle who is the "soul of pampered self-absorption"; the uproariously funny black drag queen; the acerbic and arrogant antiques dealer; the sweet-talking, piano-playing con artist; young blacks dancing the minuet at the black debutante ball; and Minerva, the voodoo priestess who works her magic in the graveyard at midnight. These and other Savannahians act as a Greek chorus, with Berendt revealing the alliances, hostilities, and intrigues that thrive in a town where everyone knows everyone else. Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil: A Savannah Story is a sublime and seductive reading experience.Brilliantly conceived and masterfully written, this enormously engaging portrait of a most beguiling Southern city is certain to become a modern classic. From the Trade Paperback edition.

I love reading about the history of Savannah and its society, community..the place sounds beautiful and enchanting. This is an excellent read and truly enjoyable, often very funny and reads like a novel. There‘s a crime, mystery, ...colourful, flawed, yet endearing characters..certainly kept me engaged and entertained. Thanks @Cinfhen , glad I joined the #MidnightParty read.

Cinfhen Great review!! Such a colorful cast of real life characters 😆 2w

Wrapped this up before continuing the Hallmark Holiday Odyssey. This book was so crazy that of course it has to be nonfiction. What a fun #buddyread Thanks @Cinfhen and @vivastory for the inspiration. #NFNov

This, my second true crime book this month has quite a bit in common with Preston's "Monster of Florence": a strong sense of place, the authors are a part of the story to a degree that is unusual for nonfiction, eccentric & flawed characters, dramatic conflict that is usually reserved for fiction. Both books had been on my TBR for years & both exceeded expectation! LFL copy from Mercer House, very cool!

vivastory Thanks for the buddy read @Cinfhen ! #MidnightParty 3w
Cinfhen Awesome review!!! What a priceless copy!!!! Thanks for giving me the push to read both books that I‘ve been wanting to read for years!!! Both were highly enjoyable and memorable. What should we read next???!!!? 3w

I didn't get much reading done over the weekend, so this is my combined #BookReport & #WeeklyForecast. I finally finished Salt Slow & Barracoon! Both really great and recommended for the right audience. Joining the #MidnightParty by starting the tagged today. My copy of The Lost Queen came in from Book Outlet so I'll finally get to finish it. Need to finish The Case Against Sugar for #NFNov, NOS4A2, & start The Last Hours #literarycrew #buddyread.

Savannah is somewhere I really want to visit now , .. because of this book. So rich & murky & the characters are truly “ characters “.
I did love the murder plot more than anything .. that‘s what I wanted to know more about. Quite an outcome in the end ...

The most entertaining true crime book I ever read. Savanna is a place where “eccentrics thrived” and “the ordinary became extraordinary.” The quirkiest group of southerners I‘ve ever encountered in fiction or nonfiction. #NonFictionNovember #MidnightParty Thanks, buddy-readers 🧡

vivastory I started it yesterday & should finish today. Great review! 4w
Cinfhen The crime itself is not even the story @vivastory it‘s the cast of characters who really propel this book. Each one is so unique and memorable 😁 4w

mom2bugnbee We honeymooned in Savannah on 1995, just one year after the book was published. I hadn't read it yet, but it was fun to feel the buzz around town (most locals were very excited) and to think back on the places we'd visited once I did read it. I need to reread this one. 4w
peaknit I‘m about halfway, I should wrap up by Saturday too, I need to stop cheating with Monster and commit!😂 3w

Meet Minerva Buzzard, Voodoo Witch Doctor. “ Now, you know how dead time works. Dead time lasts for one hour- from half an hour before midnight to half an hour after midnight. The half hour before midnight is for doin‘ good. The half hour after midnight is for doin‘ evil.” “Seems like we need a little of both tonight”, said Minerva. #NonfictionNovember #MidnightParty

Cinfhen This book is great for #ArmChairTravel but like you, @Cathythoughts I‘m curious about the murder....I purposely haven‘t read anything about it so I don‘t even know who was murdered and who was accused of murder @Balibee146 @mrp27 @lele1432 it reads pretty quickly so I‘m sure you‘ll catch up. @erzascarletbookgasm @vivastory haven‘t begun either so no worries. An ambitious week, but since I'm off work, why not?
I'm really looking forward to the Midnight buddy read. This is another true crime that's been on my TBR for years.
The final book in the Dark Tower is the largest, although not that much bigger than Wolves of Calla.
I've been meaning to read Horowitz's book since it was first published. I might swap out his book for a Christie, I've been jonesing for a Poirot lately.

When I was in Savannah, I didn‘t have time to see this statue. Next time, I‘ll go to the museum. When looking up #voodoo, this book was listed, & I remembered Minerva, the voodoo priestess. #chillingphotochallenge @Clwojick #scarathlon #teamslaughter

marleed I spent one weekend in Savannah years ago. I saw replicas of that statue in lots of little shops. I was compelled to buy the book. It,s by now well smashed in my TBR. I did watch the movie with Kevin Spacey playing creepy before he was, well, creepy! 2mo

Sitting at my hotel room in Myrtle Beach wishing I could travel to Savannah for a day before going home to freezing Illinois. 🙃🙃

JoyBlue I'm an Illinoisan, too! 💙 When we included Savannah in our road trip last year, our library's executive director told me to read this before we went. I did/DH didn't. He got so frustrated that I knew everything we were seeing while we were there that he decided to read it! We listened to it together on the rest of our trip home. 😂 OMG—was it ever hot when we were in Savannah (late March/early April). I thought we might melt! 4w

Don't mind me, just discussing spooky books and sharing a cuppa joe with my pal Grimm. I plan to read these (finally, they've been sitting on my shelf for over a year) this month in honor of Halloween. I got these when I lived just outside of Savannah, but kept reading other books on my TBR list. Any recommendations for other spooky books?

This was like watching a parade of entertainingly terrible people. Maybe "terrible" is a little strong. Endearingly unsympathetic might be better. It was also humorous at times, and really painted a beautiful picture of Savannah. Hard to believe it's nonfiction!

j9brown @Tamra It has so many crazy interesting characters, at least the first half so far has been like doing some really good people-watching. It's a slow read though, I wouldn't recommend picking it up until you're really in the mood. 3mo
Tamra @j9brown I put the audio on hold! I am tempted to watch the movie. 3mo

5*. Great book that I picked up in anticipation of my honeymoon in Savannah. Hurricane Dorian meant that wasn't to be but we will definitely be planning another trip. I thought this book was the true story of a murder but it was so much more - a look at some of the colorful characters living in Savannah.

Watching the movie before reading the book.

Lcsmcat I did it in that order and found the movie totally confusing. I‘m eager to hear how it works for you. 3mo

A mandatory evacuation means that our honeymoon in Savannah has been cancelled ☹ On the upside, the Ritz Carlton in Atlanta is taking good care of us, with a couple of complementary Dark and Stormy's!

LauraBeth Sorry to hear that your honeymoon got derailed but glad y‘all are making the best of it! 3mo

Off to Georgia for my honeymoon (together with hurricane Dorian!) and getting in the mood with this book. I thought it was about a murder but I'm over 100 pages in and there's been no mention of that so far!

I absolutely loved this book from beginning to end! The writing was impeccable and I just couldn't put it down. Now I have not yet seen the movie so this was fresh and brand new to me. Basically it was a cluster of stories centering around Savannah, GA. The writer meeting all the unique characters (Lady Chablis was my favorite) and the history of the city in detail. I love Savannah and this book just added my love for it even more. 5 stars.

Whimsical. Not so much true crime per say but the stories of the locals are so creative it just doesn‘t seem real.

Day 5 - #ElegantEvil #AugustABC

“Elegant and wicked…. Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil might be the first true-crime book that makes the reader want to book a bed and breakfast for an extended weekend at the scene of the crime.” —The New York Times Book Review

Shots rang out in Savannah‘s grandest mansion in the misty, early morning hours of May 2, 1981. Was it murder or self-defense? For nearly a decade, the shooting haunted the city.

Eggs 🤗👏🏻🤗 I have not read the book but I saw the movie 4mo
EadieB @Eggs The book is very good too! 4mo

I read this back in the 90s shortly after it was published. I think I could stand a reread! #garden #letstraveljuly

lynneamch A must-read before a trip to Savannah. There's also a cookbook 5mo
OriginalCyn620 @mydearwatson same! This one reads like a novel though, which is why I liked it so much at the time! 5mo
OriginalCyn620 @lynneamch I did not know there was a cookbook! 5mo
mydearwatson I‘ve heard the movie is pretty good, too. 5mo

I read this book 20 years ago...even found my receipt from where I bought that I used as a bookmark. At the end of the month we are taking a couple of days to go to Savannah so I do believe a reread is in order

This wasn‘t really what I expected. I thought it would focus more on the murder than it actually did. I enjoyed the parts about the murder and trial and some of the parts that weren‘t directly related to that were entertaining/interesting. But I did find myself losing interest and skimming at times, and honestly, I can‘t really say I cared about any of the people in this book. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Whew! I read this book probably 20 years ago and loved it. I‘m heading to Savannah for a Girl Scout trip this summer and decided to revisit this story. It‘s a true story, with eclectic characters and a rich description of Savannah, it‘s people, it‘s history and it‘s culture. ❤️

Tamra I really need to get this one read - for some reason it never jumps out at me. 7mo
Cortg @Tamra I totally get that! 👍🏼 7mo
