Genius lasts longer than beauty
Just finished listening to this one. I typically listen to podcasts on the way to work, but thought I‘d give an audiobook that I haven‘t previously read a try. I spaced out at a lot of different points so I missed a good chunk of dialogue and description and whatnot, but I got the basic gist of the story and the main plot points. I like the movie adaptation from a few years ago better.🤷🏻♀️ #booked2019 public domain entry, too
This week‘s covers come from the sale shelves. I love these small pocket sized editions which are easy to take along anywhere. That being said, I did somehow manage to resist buying these since I already own multiple copies of each...Do you have a favorite?
I have two more weekends on the excavation and two more sets of covers. Then I‘ll be home and catching up on ALL the reading. Can‘t wait!
This was a gift from my cousins! It‘s a scratch-off poster that has 100 books on it (a mix of classics and some more modern selections as well) and you scratch them off as you read them.
I just got it all scratched off and hung....my total on this list right now is only 24 😱
Tagged book is in progress, it‘s just been on the back burner to prioritize book clubs and such!
'How sad it is! I shall grow old, and horrible, and dreadful. But this picture will remain always young... If it were only the other way!'
Nothing matters more than beauty and youth to Dorian and Lord Henry, they live their life in the exaltation of art and beauty in all their forms.. but everything they are able to reach is the corruption of everyone around them.
I finished this at the end of Day1 for #24B4Monday, definitely a good start!
I went with a bit of pithy, oh-so-English sarcasm for my #publicdomain. And with that I‘m all done for #Booked2019 🤗 (although I‘ll still post my season selections at the end of each quarter throughout the year).
I‘ve so loved this challenge - thanks to you fabulous ladies for hosting it😘😘😘
I started this book quite a while back and realized I had never finished it. So today I sat down and finished it. I am sad that I didn‘t really enjoy it. I wanted to love it, since I really like Wilde as a historical figure. But it falls kind of...flat for me. Kind of man versus self in the most boring way. I mostly don‘t like explorations of vanity. But I did at least like how the story ended.
Interesting characters, ingaging storyline and deep meaning
The studio was filled with the rich odour of roses, and when the light summer wind stirred amidst the trees of the garden, there came through the open door the heavy scent of the lilac, or the more delicate perfume of the pink-flowering thorn. 🌹🎨

“It is only shallow people who require years to get rid of an emotion. A man who is master of himself can end a sorrow as easily as he can invent a pleasure. I don't want to be at the mercy of my emotions. I want to use them, to enjoy them, and to dominate them.”
This is the early stages where Dorian has started to change under Lord Henry's influences..
“I am jealous of everything whose beauty does not die. I am jealous of the portrait you have painted of me. Every moment that passes takes something from me and gives something to it. Oh, if it were only the other way! If the picture could change, and I could be always what I am now! It will mock me some day - mock me horribly!”

“Those who find beautiful meanings in beautiful things are the cultivated. For these there is hope.” ~ Oscar Wilde. This is one of my favorite books of all time, not only for the plot and the meaning, but also for the beautiful writing that is a joy to read. #oscarwilde #doriangray #tea
#StackAttack2019 This was THAT book for me. I‘ve wanted to read it since I was 14 years old.... it absolutely did not disappoint. Brilliantly written, with a unique story. Gotta admit I love reading about dandy‘s. ☺️ and love the banter in this book plus the surprise ending.
2) Racially biased descriptions (not as much as the misogyny but still there)

Does anyone ever turn to a book when you‘re feeling stressed/anxious? I try to use reading as a way to help me calm down in certain situations. Immersing myself in someone else‘s story has always been my happy place ✨
The first classic I bailed on this year and it's for a pet peeve of mine that I just couldn't overlook. I could get behind the characters and the plot, but the writing itself frustrated me to no end. Literally every time someone spoke, they said the listener's name, even if no one else was in the room. If I could edit those names out of the dialogues somehow, I would go back and finish the book. As it is, I can't take it.
Reading Irish authors for March book club.
Be careful what you wish for might be an old saying, but old sayings stick around for a reason, don‘t they?
Dorian Gray is saddened when his portrait is painted and he realizes he will never again be this young or handsome. He then wishes to remain young forever. Now, every time he sins, that once beautiful portrait seems to be gaining an unbecoming mark.
Oscar Wilde‘s writing style is nothing short of breathtaking, and I enjoyed every page.
Lets be clear when I say that I hate being forced to read. With a fiery passion. So as you can imagine, when I actually read a book I am forced to read, and end up actually LIKING IT, it must be good. The Picture of Dorian Gray was quite possibly one of the best books I‘ve ever read, if not THE best. The plot was engaging, the characters were interesting, it was witty, and there seemed to be... *read full review on my goodreads*
This wasn't the book that I was expecting. I'd heard so much about this book, even used it as a metaphor, but never actually read it. It's much more complex and deeper than I'd anticipated. (After all, "The Importance of Being Earnest" it's just a beautiful piece of fluff).
I'm not entirely sure what I feel. The book is brilliant and the prose is lovely. I'll want to read it again some year.
