Forget Me Not: A Novel | Stacy Willingham

A pulse-pounding new Southern thriller from the author of the runaway bestseller A Flicker in the Dark. Twenty-two years ago, Claire Campbells older sister, Natalie, disappeared shortly after her eighteenth birthday. Days later, her blood was found in a car, a man was arrested, and the case was swiftly closed. In the decades since, Claire has attempted to forget her traumatic past by moving to the city and climbing the ranks as an investigative journalist... until an unexpected call from her father forces her to come back home and face it all anew. With the entire summer now looming aheada summer spent with nothing to do in her childhood home, with her estranged motherClaire decides on a whim to accept a seasonal job at Galloway Farm, a muscadine vineyard in coastal South Carolina less than an hour away from where she grew up. At first glance, Galloway is an idyllic escape for Claire. A scenic retreat full of slow-paced nostalgia, as well as a place where her sister seemed truly happy in that last summer before she vanished, it feels like the perfect plan to pass the time. However, as soon as Claire starts to settle in, she stumbles across an old diary written by one of the vineyard's owners, and what at first seems like a story of young rebellion and love turns into something much more sinister as it begins to describe details of various unsolved crimes. As the days stretch on, Claire finds herself becoming more and more secluded as she starts to obsess over the diary's contents... as well as the lingering feeling that her own sister's disappearance may be somehow tied to it all. Galloway was supposed to be a place to help her move forward, but instead, Claire quickly finds herself immersed in her own dark and dangerous past.

Willingham‘s writing is consistently engaging & entertaining— this latest one is no exception! Claire returns to SC, thinking of her older sister who disappeared 22 years earlier. When looking through photos, she ends up following her sister‘s last summer plan & getting a job at the winery where she last worked. The discovery of Marcia‘s journal from the 1980s reveals secrets lurking beneath the surface. The dual timelines are great— a pageturner!

TorieStorieS @ShelleyBooksie Thanks!! My mother-in-law has such a green thumb and every year has the best planters full of thriving plants— it‘s too bad her son didn‘t inherit this affinity for plants! But it does make reading in their yard extra fun! 3mo

This was fine. I lost a bit of interest in the depth of the deception, but I blame my mood for that. It does have me pondering the process loved ones move through to accept closure for a death when no body is found.

This was a decently entertaining thriller, marred only slightly by an overly complicated plot and a few plot points that strained credibility. It is told in 2 time periods, present day by the main character Claire and through the readings of a diary written years ago by another young woman named Marcia. There were some unexpected plot twists that I enjoyed, and the isolated setting was suitably foreboding. Thanks to Edelweiss+ for the ARC. 3.75/5

Lsmoore43 I gave it the same 3.75 stars. I was a bit disappointed in it. 3mo
Mpcacher @Lsmoore43 It didn't quite measure up, did it? I don't regret reading it though. 3mo
Lsmoore43 @Mpcacher I feel exactly the same. I'm glad I read it but it didn't measure up.

I've read an enjoyed all of this author's previous books. I enjoyed this one. The best in my opinion was her very first book, A FLICKER IN THE DARK... It was so good.

This book is about a young woman whose sister went missing. Natalie was the oldest of the two sisters. When she went out the window to meet up with someone it was the last time she was seen.

3.75 stars

Claire Campbell quit her job, came home, and started to relive the year her sister was murdered.

A slow start but worth the wait.

When you find out the secrets, your jaw will drop and you won‘t be able to stop reading.

It is a good one, Stacy Willingham fans. 4/5

Thank you to the publisher for a copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Stacy Wliilngham is an auto-buy for me. This newest novel is a perfect example of why. Two sisters, separated by so much unknown history, have similar harrowing experiences decades apart. Secrets, a hidden diary, isolation, family, kidnapping, murder, and, of course, dysfunctional characters. Cut off from everything, Claire tries to resolve her feelings about her missing sister and uncovers so much more than she bargained for. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“Avoiding the thing you‘re afraid of only gives it more power.”

Smooth phrasing and descriptions, started out with nice flow and character introductions; but later on plot details became incongruous. So far my 2 favorite Willinghams are Flicker in the Dark and All the Dangerous Things.

This author is totally new to me but boy, is she on my radar now!

Steady propulsion but things really get cooking in the back half, especially the final quarter moving at NASCAR level speeds. A solid thriller. I can definitely see it being a Netflix popcorn film.

#BOTM had it early, it‘s on shelves next week I think.

Diplomatic review: This novel wasn't really for me, and I should have known that ahead of time based on my experience with two other Willingham books. I don't find the main character believable, and the twists feel forced and the emotionality overwrought rather than organic. However, it's successful at what novels like this are supposed to do, and the narration is great.

Spoiler rant in comments.

This is an ARC from StoryGraph/Macmillan Audio.

ImperfectCJ My not-diplomatic review: Good grief, how long does it take this woman to read a diary (a completely unrealistic diary)? While she's not believable as a crime journalist, she's so believable as an *unsuccessful* crime journalist. She is so annoying, and trauma doesn't excuse it. And she and her mom just leave a crime scene to go for coffee and a little road trip? And anything that the author can't explain is, like, "I guess we'll never know"? 4mo
