Haunting of Hill House
Haunting of Hill House | Shirley Jackson
The classic supernatural thriller by an author who helped define the genre First published in 1959, Shirley Jackson's "The Haunting of Hill House" has been hailed as a perfect work of unnerving terror. It is the story of four seekers who arrive at a notoriously unfriendly pile called Hill House: Dr. Montague, an occult scholar looking for solid evidence of a "haunting"; Theodora, his lighthearted assistant; Eleanor, a friendless, fragile young woman well acquainted with poltergeists; and Luke, the future heir of Hill House. At first, their stay seems destined to be merely a spooky encounter with inexplicable phenomena. But Hill House is gathering its powers and soon it will choose one of them to make its own. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust theseries to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-datetranslations by award-winning translators."

Book 16: Jackson's writing is sophisticated and intelligent. This book however is mixed for me. First of all, it only faintly resembles the show. Even without that, though, the book started strong then got muddled as it progressed. The end felt especially abrupt, but the entire second half of the book was like she was either rushed to finish or completely gave up on the original premise.

Patchshank I didn't like the book much either. It started off fine then just got weird, but not is a good way. 1d

I really enjoyed this book. I didn't anticipate how much I'd grow to like the characters by the end of the book. One of those books I was a little sad to get to the end of.

Apparently Jackson lived in Vermont and wrote a number of books here. I really appreciated this 4-minute video made by a local reporter about Jackson. Her son provides some interesting tidbits. This book wasn't what I expected. It was atmospheric as fuck, and the ending was simultaneously depressing and horrifying. Unlike the Netflix series this book leaves you wondering if anyone can ever really "go home".

Ultimately it didn't turn out to be what I hoped. I loved Jackson's short story the lottery and wanted this to be just as eerie, but it fell short. At least for my modern day sensibilities it did. Perhaps it's creepier for others. It's fine to read for a look at classic horror, but I wouldn't want to revisit it. ⭐⭐⭐

Started the #audiobook for haunting of hill house for #halfbloodbingo with @jmtrivera and friends for the category a book that's been adapted for the screen. I loved the Netflix series so I wanted to read the source material. Interesting so far, but I must confess at this point in my reading, I liked the show better. Ugh I hate to say it but I didn‘t love this book as much as I was hoping I would. Maybe it was too much hype or maybe my expectations were just too high. It wasn‘t bad but I also didn‘t find it very memorable. The ending felt rushed and I never felt like I bonded with the characters. I adored We Have Always Lived in the Castle and was thinking I would love this one as well.

Jee_HookedOnBookz Awww so sorry you didn't enjoy this! I loved 'Castle' too, probably just a little bit more than 'Haunting' :) 4mo
Kimberlone I just finished this and really didn‘t care for it. I didn‘t like Castle either but I wanted to give Jackson another shot before I gave up on her because she is a very beloved author by many. I had a hard time finding anything to connect with in her characters. I guess she‘s just not for me 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4mo

I finished this book earlier this month to get into the Halloween spirit and I feel like I picked a good one. I‘ve seen The Haunting when it came out and have been wanting to read it ever since. The Haunting was pretty dead on to the book and it took another turn about halfway through but I can understand why. The book ending probably wouldn‘t translate well to film but I thought it was a great finish to the book. In true Shirley Jackson fashion.

Sooo I'm still on the fence about how I feel about this book. It def didnt scare me but I had a hard time focusing on it too. I did like the end of it which I think is what helped me to give it a thumbs up. I finished the show last week and I'm still having nightmares of that. I'd like to hear people's thoughts on the book for sure.

mdm139 I loved this book. I actually screamed at one point. 4mo
Chrissyreadit I thought it was a good story and liked it but it was unusual for me to like a book with so many dislikable characters. 4mo
PSreads73 I just purchased the book and the show on blu ray. I will be reading the book first. There have also been 2 movies made about the book. The movies are both titled The Haunting. One I think is from the 60”s the other is 1999. The movies aren‘t rated very high though. 4mo
Callemarie @PSreads73 the show is LOOOOOOOSELY based on the book. I say that because you could watch the show and nothing would be spoiled in the book. The show was great I thought 4mo

😐 I dunno. These people were vapid and their conversations were often nonsensical. The ending was good, though holy moly why would you let her do that, but I was expecting more terror and more build up. As was, felt a bit sprung on me, but maybe that was just me?
