Shadow of Night
Shadow of Night: A Novel | Deborah Harkness
The #1 New York Times–bestselling sequel to A Discovery of Witches—“as enchanting, engrossing, and impossible to put down as its predecessor” (Miami Herald)J. K. Rowling, Stephenie Meyer, Anne Rice—only a few writers capture the imagination the way that Deborah Harkness has with her New York Times–bestselling All Souls trilogy. A Discovery of Witches introduces reluctant witch Diana Bishop, vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont, and the battle for a lost, enchanted manuscript known as Ashmole 782.Picking up from A Discovery of Witches’ cliffhanger ending, Shadow of Night takes Diana and Matthew on a trip through time to Elizabethan London, where they are plunged into a world of spies, magic, and a coterie of Matthew’s old friends, the School of Night. As the search for Ashmole 782 deepens and Diana seeks out a witch to tutor her in magic, the net of Matthew’s past tightens around them, and they embark on a very different—and vastly more dangerous—journey. The Book of Life, the much-anticipated conclusion to the All Souls trilogy, will be published by Viking in July 2014.

This is long and complicated. There are hundreds of characters, many of whom are very briefly in the story. So much of the travel seems unnecessary. There wasn‘t enough about the magic and way too much about the politics of the time. It just didn‘t work for me. Will I still read the final one? Yes. Will I ever re-read this? No.

DivineDiana Hundreds of characters! 😲 3mo
Mrs_B @DivineDiana yes. It‘s really odd. Some are in the story for about 3 chapters at most. Some even less. I suspect some at the beginning were being set up for the final book but it‘s still odd. And some were quite clearly just an “aside†but there were plenty others who you expected to become an integral part of the story and then you just never heard from again. So weird. 3mo
Mrs_B @DivineDiana the more I think about this the more it‘s annoying me. 😂 3mo
DivineDiana I get it! 🤣 3mo
Mrs_B @DivineDiana I have started the third one because I want to know what happens and after nearly 3 weeks of reading I feel I have to. But there are MORE RANDOM CHARACTERS. 3mo

I thought this book was really clever. I loved the historical references (especially the School of Night. Lit nerd heaven!) and the juxtaposition of the story between 1590‘s Europe and the modern timeline. There are brand new characters and you meet some that were previously referenced. I wound up really loving a couple of characters that I didn‘t expect to like at all. I may have even liked this book more than the first one.

Scochrane26 I think this is my favorite of the 3, but I loved them all. And the tv show. 4mo
Ericalambbrown @Scochrane26 I started the tv show when we picked up AMC+ this fall. Then I stopped to read the books when I liked the show so much. Now I just want Gallowglass to get his own book. 4mo

I chose to read this as a real-time reading - the book opened on November 1st, and I have been following the real-time schedule (reading the chapter on the day it occurred) since then. A fun way to read, but there were very long stretches between chapters, and I quite honestly didn‘t quite remember everything!

Harkness has created a plausible world of creatures, and their interactions with historical figures from the 16th century..:⬇ï¸â¬‡ï¸â¬‡ï¸

Librarybelle 🔼🔼🔼…are quite fascinating. Admittedly, there are parts of the narrative that dragged, making me wonder why certain scenes were drawn out. Diana would also irritate me at times. But, I liked reading this. I‘m looking forward to reading the next one on my own terms (not following a real-time schedule). 9mo

Although I liked it a little bit less than the first part, I almost couldn't put away this book. There was just a bit too much blabber between Matthews friends. Matthew himself was also not always the nicest guy around. But Diana's part was obviously very nice to read. It must have been so cool to live in the 16th century for some time! I'm also quite jealous of her magic dragon and I adored Jack and Annie!

For me this is a typical case of book two in a trilogy syndrome. Pure filler, a lack of direction and an abundance of waffling.

There were parts in this that felt of value to the overall plot but on the whole this was a slog and all thats happening is your watching the author flex her historical knowledge in a drab fashion. This could have been magical, a previous century brought to life but it fell flat, sigh.

I liked the first in the series more, this one was definitely way more historical. I enjoyed all the literature references too, and having Kit Marlowe be a demon 😂

This follow up seemed to be losing touch with the story by throwing dozens of characters in, and having the main couple repeat the same relationship problems again and again. I hope the last book wraps everything up!

The history and time spent in Elizabethan England was quite fun. But Diana and Matthew seem to have lost ALL sense of urgency when they time walked to the past! I just couldn‘t deal with this series any more. The romance is so toxic and stupid that it made it impossible to read. And since this one takes place in Elizabethan England, it gave Matthew the excuse to be even more sexist, possessive, and controlling towards Diana. I‘m not a fan of promoting unhealthy relationships. This series is just dark academia Twilight. And that‘s not a compliment.

I am really enjoying this trilogy. I love all the history and details. It makes me appreciate being a woman in this century though. The freedoms we have compared to then for example. It also really makes you feel human mortality. I have gasped out loud, laughed and cried while reading this. That alone is a sign of a truly engaging story. It is a grand adventure and I can't wait to see how it ends.

DogMomIrene I read the first book when it came out and didn‘t follow up with the series. I need to revisit this world because I do remember living that first book, and I‘m not a fan of vampires so that‘s saying something😂 2y

It may be my mood lately, but I didn‘t enjoy this reread as much as I did in 2015. I gave it 5 stars then. Today I might give it 3.5. Diana and Matthew both irritate me and I don‘t care for the audiobook narrator. There are some fun elements to the time travel, but it‘s the secondary characters that make the book worth reading. Gallowglass is the one I was most looking forward to seeing again, and I will miss Jack very much.

Palimpsest I loved this one more than the first one, but i did feel that their relationship was too dependent and wrapped up in each other where it seems unhealthy. I never read the third book after I accidentally returned my copy to a library when I moved and didn‘t realize it, then tried to read an actual library copy and just couldn‘t get into it. I‘m loving the tv series. I was thinking of trying The Book of Life again. Third time is a charm, right? 2y
