Shadow of Night: A Novel | Deborah Harkness
The #1 New York Timesbestselling sequel to A Discovery of Witchesas enchanting, engrossing, and impossible to put down as its predecessor (Miami Herald)J. K. Rowling, Stephenie Meyer, Anne Riceonly a few writers capture the imagination the way that Deborah Harkness has with her New York Timesbestselling All Souls trilogy. A Discovery of Witches introduces reluctant witch Diana Bishop, vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont, and the battle for a lost, enchanted manuscript known as Ashmole 782.Picking up from A Discovery of Witches cliffhanger ending, Shadow of Night takes Diana and Matthew on a trip through time to Elizabethan London, where they are plunged into a world of spies, magic, and a coterie of Matthews old friends, the School of Night. As the search for Ashmole 782 deepens and Diana seeks out a witch to tutor her in magic, the net of Matthews past tightens around them, and they embark on a very differentand vastly more dangerousjourney. The Book of Life, the much-anticipated conclusion to the All Souls trilogy, will be published by Viking in July 2014.

What an adventure I really enjoyed it.
The story was time consuming with rich writing, and many characters so it took me a little longer but it was worth it.
I plan on reading the third book in the series 🧛🏻‍♂️🧙🏻‍♀️

megzlynn I started this book back last spring then went into a book slump. I am thinking about giving it another shot. 2d
Areader2 @megzlynn you should it was a little time consuming because there are so many characters to keep track of and details but worth it, now I can‘t wait to the second season! 16h

This had a very slow start. You can tell the author enjoyed immersing herself in the 16th century Europe, but I honestly couldn't care less. But halfway through (or something like that) things finally started to happen, and once again I was impressed with how much detail this world was created. Interesting 2nd half didn't manage to turn this on pick side, but I still plan on finishing this series because I really want to know what happens! 📚

HOTPock3tt I wholeheartedly agree with everything you said about this book. I felt the same way 1mo

If you loved Matthew and Diana's story in A Discovery of Witches, then you definitely need to find out the other half in Shadow of Night!! Diana learning more about herself, get powers, and her family in this book brought many new things and questions to light! The ever elusive book could possibly be within reach, but at what price? This book answered many questions but had left me on the edge to find out what happens next!!

⭐️⭐️⭐️ 💫3.5 Stars | This is the second book of the All Souls trilogy, and it definitely felt like the middle of a story rather than a book on its own. It had its moments, but didn‘t pack the same punch as the first book. I‘m hopeful the third (and final) book will be better. The writing was still superb (don‘t get me wrong), and I enjoyed it...but I don‘t feel like enough happened.

sebrittainclark I felt the exact same way! 4mo
baes @sebrittain Did you like book 3 more? 4mo

Diane and Matthew travel back in time as Diane begins to understand a bit more about her magic. In the past, Diane struggles to find a tutor to hone her magic and Matthew struggles with the past he left long ago. I was truly invested in these characters and this didn't disappoint.

I love the historical details and Deborah Harkness excels at bringing everyday Tudor life alive. The introduction of recognisable personalities of the time such as William Shakespeare and Kit Marlow were interesting, but it was the witches which fascinated me. The pace is slower in This book not as page turning as A Discovery of Witches but it is still a strong book. The characters and twists keep the plot moving forward.

This has been an incredibly busy week, and I am exhausted 😴 As predicted, the final weeks of school combined with my spring skating show have left me with zero energy and zero time to relax. Hoping to turn that around, starting tonight! This book has taken me quite a while to read because of so many interruptions, but I am down to about 200 pages left 🎉

My reading buddy has been very happy about some recent spring days - which means reading outside ☀️ while she pulls me around the yard, of course. The rest of the week has lots of rain and my spring skating show ⛸ so I don‘t think I‘ll get much more reading done. Savoring some time tonight with Shadow of Night - I‘m halfway through! This series is taking a lot longer to read than recent Shadowhunters books, but it‘s so worth it.

When I fall deeply in love with a series, I tend to blow through the chapters just to find out what happens as quickly as possible. I don‘t worry about missing details—that is what a second read is for! Today I continued my second read of the All Souls Trilogy. Hidden on the first page was this quote, which couldn‘t have come at a better moment. Reading is THE best therapy. If you‘re in the market for a great series—please check these out!

@LibrarianRyan I know you have given great recommendations in the past! He reads voraciously...I can‘t keep up!

MicrobeMom How about the Earth Children Series? (edited) 9mo
TrishB Has he read the James Patterson Maximum Ride series? My daughter loved these. 9mo
LibrarianRyan I‘m reading the disasters now and loving it. Jay Kristoff teen books. The adult books may be too adult. Same for his writing partner Amie Kaufman. Have you tried Levin Thumps or Erec Rex yet? Coming of dragons. I agree with maximum ride. Love that series. Also uglies, skinned, and unwind. 9mo
See All 25 Comments
Chrissyreadit @MicrobeMom yes- good series- different from his typical and totally worth him trying! 9mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Nora Robert‘s Morrigan‘s Cross trilogy 9mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Kevin Hearne‘s Iron Druid series 9mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Normally I‘d say older teen for those two, but if he liked the Discovery of Witches Trilogy he‘d like them. 9mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Has he tried Terry Pratchett‘s Discworld 9mo
Chrissyreadit @LibrarianRyan he and I were just discussing that- he is unrestricted and has read books that he tells me he probably shouldn‘t... and I told him YA did not exist when I was a teen and many of my books had sex as part of the story- it‘s funny how different books are now! He‘s really good about discerning and likes teen romance the best. 9mo
BookNAround My youngest absolutely inhaled 9mo
BookNAround Also, old books but I remember devouring Anne McCaffery‘s books starting with 9mo
MeganAnn The All Souls Trilogy is one of my favorites as well. I just finished reading a new book I‘d never heard of but absolutely loved which had similar vibes called Prophecy of Three. There are two more books in the series which I hope to read soon as well. 9mo
LibrarianRyan @Chrissyreadit then give Kristiff a try. Start with Illuminae. They are s I fi but also a love story. 9mo
Chrissyreadit Thank you!!!! He has copied everyone‘s suggestions that he has not yet read- you are the best! @MicrobeMom @TrishB @LibrarianRyan @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BookNAround @MeganAnn 9mo
BarbaraJean Ender‘s Game and its sequels if he hasn‘t already read them! He also might give the Wheel of Time series a try—plenty there to keep him occupied! Also Brandon Sanderson‘s The Rithmatist—so good! 9mo
CarolynM No fantasy in this one (and very little sex) but it's a great teen romance 9mo
Lizpixie If he likes SciFi that has a touch of absurd, try 9mo
Lizpixie Another oldie but goodie is this series from Anne McCaffrey 9mo
Lizpixie My first big fantasy novel that made a huge impression on me at 15 is 9mo
Lizpixie Finally, I can‘t recommend this high fantasy series enough, I started the first book at 18, but if it had been published when I was your sons age I would‘ve devoured it then 9mo
TheLudicReader Not sure how old your son is but Michael Grant‘s Gone series is popular with boys I teach. The Monument 14 series by Emmy Laybourne is great (some mature content) and if he hasn‘t already read it, I can highly recommend Patrick Ness‘s Chaos Walking series. Sooooo good. 9mo
GirlNamedJesse I can not recommend Skulduggery enough!! More action, adventure and magic than romance, but the humor and twists more than offset it. 💀 9mo
ReadingRover The 5th Wave by Rick Yancy is a good series. Also Steelheart series by Brandon Sanderson is awesome(dystopian & superheroes). The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater is great series which has magic & romance and The Scorpio Races is my favorite book by her. 9mo
