Time's Convert
Time's Convert | Deborah Harkness
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Discovery of Witches, a novel about what it takes to become a vampire. Set in contemporary Paris and London, and the American colonies during the upheaval and unrest that exploded into the Revolutionary War, a sweeping story that braids together the past and present. On the battlefields of the American Revolution, Matthew de Clermont meets Marcus MacNeil, a young surgeon from Massachusetts, during a moment of political awakening when it seems that the world is on the brink of a brighter future. When Matthew offers him a chance at immortality and a new life, free from the restraints of his puritanical upbringing, Marcus seizes the opportunity to become a vampire. But his transformation is not an easy one and the ancient traditions and responsibilities of the de Clermont family clash with Marcus's deeply-held beliefs in liberty, equality, and brotherhood. Fast forward to contemporary London, where Marcus has fallen for Phoebe Taylor, a young employee at Sotheby's. She decides to become a vampire, too, and though the process at first seems uncomplicated, the couple discovers that the challenges facing a human who wishes to be a vampire are no less formidable in the modern world than they were in the 18th century. The shadows that Marcus believed he'd escaped centuries ago may return to haunt them both--forever. A passionate love story and a fascinating exploration of the power of tradition and the possibilities for change, Time's Convert will delight fans of the All Souls trilogy and all readers of magic, the supernatural, and romance.

So, I am not going to DNF this one, not yet, but I am going to just take it off my actively reading list and .. maybe retry it later? I just can't and I feel like it's just hanging there. I have 8 hours left!? ugh! I should just DNF but... I am wishy-washy about it

#DogsOfLitsy -- just because, I like having a pic :)

SRWCF Looks like doggo might feel the same way about the book as you do! 🐶🤣 4mo

LibrarianRyan Baby - I bought Time's Convert too. And the thing is, I liked discovery of witches, but it was such a chore getting to the end, that I never read any of the others. And I felt pressured to buy time's convert. I get it if you DNF. 4mo
sprainedbrain I thought this one was so disappointing after the trilogy. 😬 4mo
ElizaMarie @LibrarianRyan I liked the discover of witches trilogy too. And I am enjoying the show. this one is just so hard to get into. It's a thing... ugh. But yeah, not fully giving it up, just shelving it for now. 4mo

I am having such a hard time getting through this. Its just not like the others. I am super tempted to DNF it but I have it as a background #AudioCommute. I did catch up on Season 3 Episode 3 of the show though.

TrishB I only gave this one a so-so, but loved the trilogy. 4mo
ElizaMarie @TrishB So I really liked the first 3 books. This one is so close to a DNF, like I just can't get through it. But I keep it on the back burner for now. 4mo

Bk20 of #LittensDressedInBlood & Bk1 of October is finally done! I‘m sorry I‘ve been MIA but my baby girl was struggling a bit so I‘ve been staying with her longer than expected. I did manage to get in some spooky TV which will be in other post. This book I finished mostly by audio as it was easier. And I got a few hrs of another book done too before dnfing it for now. This one is a companion book to the All Souls trilogy. #Scarathlon2021 3,056pts👇

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! Hopefully your daughter is feeling better!!! Is this the one who just had the baby? 7mo
Lizpixie @TheAromaofBooks yes, I‘m pretty sure he has a bit of colic so he‘s fussing a lot, especially at night. She‘s not the type to deal well with no sleep plus seeing your newborn in pain is so stressful, I‘m happy to spend as much time as possible with them both and help her be the wonderful mother I know she is. 7mo
TheAromaofBooks Oh yes, my niece was a very colicky baby and it felt like no one got any sleep for three months!! I'm glad you're able to give her some extra support - I know for a while you couldn't get out to see family. :-/ Hopefully the baby feels better soon. In the meantime, it's always nice to have an “excuse“ for more baby-bonding time!! 7mo

1. The tagged book, because a portion of it takes place during the Revolutionary War in Bethlehem, PA. It talks about a hospital for wounded soldiers. That was our music department study room while I was in college. I felt like I was there 😄
2. It doesn‘t really matter, but I find myself reading more books set in England or continental Europe than anywhere else.

The main part of the book was devoted to telling Marcus‘ history which I enjoyed. It also covered Pheobe‘s early days as a vampire and her struggles as she adjusted.
I felt like the parts focusing on Diana and Matthew didn‘t quite fit. Like those could have been a separate book leaving this one devoted to Marcus and Phoebe.

#SpookySaturday @TheNeverendingTBR
1. Tagged book is a book I hugely enjoyed, set across the American Civil War and the French Revolution.
2. I really liked What we do in the shadows! The TV show got boring very quickly though, the gags really don't land after a while.
3. I would recommend the tagged book, and Deborah Harkness' Discovery of witches series.
The photo is me outside Bram Stoker's house in Chelsea, pretending to be terrified!!

TheNeverendingTBR Well there's a few here I've never heard of, so I'll need to look into those ones if they're decent; nice picture you'd posted alongside the tag too..good job and thanks for playing along! 👌 1y

While I did enjoy this one, I didn't enjoy it as much as the trilogy.

I was happy to learn more about Marcus, but for me it was the magic and the science bits that I loved in the first books, and this was lacking in this new addition.

Another book marked off for #BookSpinBingo! @TheAromaofBooks

Phoebe wants to be changed into a vampire but the 90 day wait to get back to Marcus is challenging. I still like vampires that glitter gold in the sun but these books are fun. Good historical story mixed in. It‘s vampire reading season!🧛‍♂️🧛‍♀️

For fans of the All Souls trilogy, this continues the story of Matthew & Diana & Phoebe. It‘s really about Marcus, his history, & his struggle with regrets & past choices. I liked this story, but not much happens, & it‘s not as good as the trilogy.

Ms Harkness puts her considerable talents to use in this, the 4th book in her All Souls series. She gives us Marcus McNeil‘s back story taking place, largely, during the American and French Revolutions. Marcus, the vampiric son of Matthew Clairmont, is a healer. Fun story.

I missed Diana Bishop, who does not play a central, although the twins are coming into their powers in interesting ways. Not as great as the early books, but worth a read.

Alright. So. I liked this one a lot more than Book of Life, mostly because I love Marcus. I have lots of issues with it though, mainly the telling-not-showing writing fails, the sheer amount of characters, and the sometimes out-of-character actions of longtime staples, but I liked it. It was a different perspective from the other three books (finally!) and had the past-narrative that I loved about the second book. A solid 3/5

#quaranreads

mollyrotondo Uhh I hated Book of Life too! 2y
MsRadioSilence @mollyrotondo i think my biggest problem with it was Diana and Matthew. I hated their characters! That and it was just really boring for how long the book was 🥱 2y
mollyrotondo @MsRadioSilence it was horribly boring, I agree. Nothing happened for the majority of that book. There was no reason to continue to follow Diana and Matthew at that point 2y

This is the story of Marcus and of Phoebe‘s transformation into a vampire. I enjoyed Marcus‘s backstory of the American and French Revolution, but found both Marcus and Phoebe obnoxious during her transformation. The remaining story (which wasn‘t much) was just blah. They also had a new narrator, who was not on par with Jennifer Ikeda, who did the All Souls Trilogy.
