HELP!
HELP!: How to Become Slightly Happier and Get a Bit More Done | Oliver Burkeman
13 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
How do you solve the problem of human happiness? Its a subject that has occupied some of the greatest philosophers of all time, from Aristotle to Paul McKenna but how do we sort the good ideas from the terrible ones? Over the past few years, Oliver Burkeman has travelled to some of the strangest outposts of the happiness industry in an attempt to find out. In Help!, the first collection of his popular Guardian columns, Burkeman presents his findings. Its a witty and thought-provoking exploration that punctures many of self-helps most common myths, while also offering clear-headed, practical and of ten counter-intuitive advice on a range of topics from stress, procrastination and insomnia to wealth, laughter, time management and creativity. It doesnt claim to have solved the problem of human happiness. But it might just bring us one step closer.

So ... successfully kicked my Amazon/Kindle book buying habit! Yay me!

Replaced it with a NetGalley/book requesting habit! Nay me 😐

I'm no better off at all - well, except financially ☺ - as my TBR is growing just as fast!

Seriously, how is a reader to resist? I'm the proverbial kid in the candy store. Zero willpower.

I know that, in common with most bookworms, I will never conquer Mount TBR, but it's just out of control 😲

Jen_Reads Netgalley is awful just for having so many requests. It‘s addicting. 6y
Copwithabook I just made a post about my book buying addiction lol. You are not alone 6y

Dear Aunty Litsy,

Does anyone have any useful advice/books/resources that can actually help with procrastination/time management/ getting your act together?

I went freelance last year, and while I love the work, I'm making a right old hash of working to deadlines while being in my house. If I don't sort myself out, I'm going to have to go back and work for the man again. Urgh.

Yours in desperation,
Rachel

CrowCAH Rachel, first off, congrats on freelancing! While I don‘t have a book suggestion, to-do lists and blocking time for each project will ensure you get it done and on time! Good luck 🍀 6y

BookishMe I may need to check out that book myself... I wish I knew what to suggest, having been a freelancer for more than a decade. As an incorrigible procrastinatinator, last minute remains my productivity trigger ;o like right now, I should be handling a small pile of work but... 😒☹️😕 6y
merelybookish I wish! While writing my diss I read every book I could find (arguably another form of procrastination. 🤔) and I still struggle. In a way, I've tried to make peace with it, which has helped me be more realistic about how long things will take and to identify the parts of a project I can get done before panic hits. 6y
rockpools @tournevis Do you know, That's probably the single one of these things I've never read. I'll find a copy. Ta. 6y
rockpools @CrowCAH Thanks! Maybe I need to be stricter with my time blocking. 6y
rockpools @BkClubCare Cheers. Will take a look. 6y
rockpools @BookishMe Incorrigible procrastination is very much the thing. I can put together the most beautiful and realistic plan, but actually *doing* it! I'm really bugging me now. ☹️ 6y
knittedgnome I have good luck upping my productivity by using a bullet journal. Helps keep me accountable and remember all the little things. 6y
rockpools @merelybookish I seem to be pretty useless until the panic hits, and I *so* need to get out of that pattern. I've even tried setting myself fake deadlines - no joy! Personality transplant - only option! 6y
rockpools @knittedgnome ...tell me more? 6y
BookishMe @RachelO execution is a bummer! I came across this idea for 'Done' list instead of a To do list. It helped somewhat to see that I got some things done, than not. Maybe that could help you? 6y
BookishMe @merelybookish agree about making peace, at least I don't beat myself up too much nowadays... I too used to underestimate the time required (and overestimate myself :o) but somehow still not giving tasks proper priority 6y
knittedgnome I keep my pretty basic but also like to make trackers for some things. I use two pages for a week on the left I break into a grid for each day. On the right I list my tasks broken down into chunks if possible. Then I fill in the days from my calendar if there are any commitments. Next I look at my to do list and assign things days. I do add more to my list as the week goes on and assign those as needed. 6y
knittedgnome http://bulletjournal.com/ is a great place to look around for ideas to get started. 6y
CouronneDhiver Get a simple timer! One hour of actual work = five minute break. You might surprise yourself. 😊 6y
Redwritinghood I don‘t have a book recommendation, but as someone who works at home I can tell you two things that have worked for me. 1) have a dedicated work space so that when you go there it‘s just like going to the office 2) to-do lists with due dates - I use Microsoft Outlook for that. Good luck! 6y
Jess7 I do not off the top of my head, but I‘m going to add a hashtag #procrastination to find this post later bc I‘m interested to see which books are recommended. Good luck! 6y
EvieBee I heard about this one on a Podcast and I liked it! Then I got a bullet journal instead of spending lots of money on a time slot planner and it‘s helped me a lot to track what I feel is important. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan I‘m going to second what‘s been said here and add that rewarding myself helped - if I got what needed to be done accomplished then I could do something fun. The reverse is true too, though. If I‘m not getting work done, then I get regular breaks but not as much fun time. Also, try breaking things down so you don‘t burn out on a project. A little every day goes a long way and sometimes it‘s easier to see progress when it‘s not all at once. 6y
TheWordJar I can relate to everything you are going through! Also a freelancer who can‘t get motivated until the last minute. Unfortunately, I have no helpful advice. In fact, it feels like it‘s getting worse the older I get. So, I guess thank you for posting this, and a big thanks to everyone who‘s offered advice! 6y
LauraBeth I am the world‘s BIGGEST procrastinator! I read this book about 7 years ago and still apply the methods that I learned. It really helped me. 6y
rockpools @BookishMe Right! Trying the Done list today! 6y
rockpools @knittedgnome Thank you! I'll have a browse through that, and give it a go. 6y
rockpools @CouronneDhiver Good plan! I do use my phone timer, but the distraction potential there is a problem... on the shopping list. 6y
rockpools @Redwritinghood You've nailed one of the major problems. My 'office' is a corner of the bedroom and frankly that doesn't help. Still trying to solve this one. Thank you! 😊 6y
rockpools @Jess7 👍Thanks! 6y
rockpools @EvieBee Interesting- thanks! I'll see if I can find a copy. 6y
rockpools @jpmcwisemorgan Thank you. This is something I haven't managed to build in to my life yet - I'll have a think on this one. 6y
rockpools @TheWordJar Sob! I think the difference as I've got older is I refuse to give up my sleep, so last minute is that bit shorter than it was. Will let you know how it goes! 6y
rockpools @LauraBeth Right! Buying this one right now. Been aware of it for years, but somehow haven't ever read it. Thank you 😘 6y

I‘m new to BOTM, I received the email that my box had been shipped but according to the tracking it hasn‘t gone anywhere yet... other people have already gotten their boxes! Is this normal? Please let me know! #botm

mrozzz Sometimes normal... depends on what day you confirmed your box. 6y
Rachellynnwright @mrozzz hmm I confirmed it right away on the 1st... maybe it‘s because I added extra books? 6y
mrozzz That shouldn‘t be the case. Might be worth sending an email to their support team. 6y

TheBookStacker Sometimes the shipping doesn‘t update because yesterday my tracking said it was still in PA and then I checked this morning and it‘s out for delivery. 6y
VinceReads Yeah I gave up tracking mine. It was never updated until it was out for delivery or I already received it. 6y
Rachellynnwright @mrozzz @Eggs @TheBookStacker @VinceReads thank you for the insight! I‘m an obsessive tracker, so I guess I‘ll have to trust that my box will come eventually. Or maybe I‘ll email support just for fun ;) 6y

I‘m really not enjoying my library right now, it‘s literally overflowing into the hallway. The thought of emptying the shelves to move into another room just to fill them back up again, isn‘t appealing right now. I sincerely wish my husband would move his fucking office instead and give me more room

Bookish.Heart It looks wonderful to me! But I understand, it‘s so nice to have everything neatly organized 😀 6y
Rachellynnwright You have enough books to make a lovely rainbow bookshelf! Or not, but there‘s a lot of bookshelf inspiration on Pinterest. You could do just one section a day? 6y

DeborahSmall @Rachellynnwright I know it doesn‘t look like it but I have a system 😂. Signed books together, then YA, then by genre or nationality;I have my Scottish and Irish authors together, unless of course I own a signed copy.... I need a few more bookcases and then I can move around within stepping on piles of books ❤️ 6y
LeahBergen This made me laugh! I SO need more bookshelves. 😂😂 6y
Scurvygirl 😹😜 I get it. 6y
brilliantglow You need those Ikea Billy corner shelves to help carry your books around the room 6y

TrishB Always more bookshelves. If my hubby didn‘t collect records there would be space for 3 more book cases!! 6y
DeborahSmall @TrishB the same space now taking up my books used to hold my DVD collection. Sam has never forgiven me for getting rid of them but I needed the space and we rarely watched dvds because of sky cinema.... there were some classics I do regret parting with x 6y
TrishB No way Hubby‘s getting rid of his records 😁 6y

Help, please! My Mom‘s husband was placed on a vent in ICU last night, and I‘m going to go stay up there with her on my days off. I‘m taking my kindle, but of course need something else to go with me. Aside from Fireman & Ghostly (don‘t want to start those yet) which one from the first 3 cubbies would you take?!

ErinC The Serpent King is awesome. 6y
Alicia Phasma! Just because I have it on hold from the library! I hope that everything is okay with your family. 💕 6y

Help increase my #TBR. 🤦🏼‍♀️ #audio #audiobooks #truecrime

CaraLiane True crime isn‘t my genre but I listen to a lot of podcasts while I work and I‘ve noticed that there are quite a few true crime podcasts with strong followings. Plus, they are free. 🙂 6y
TommieMarie74 I recommend Devil in the White City by Erik Larson or Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt. Also, not an audio book but I highly recommend the podcast Small Town Murders. 😊 6y
britt_brooke @CaraLiane I‘ve never listened to a podcast, but I really need to try it sometime. I‘ve heard there are a lot of true crime ones, too. Thanks for the reminder! 6y

readordierachel I really liked this one 6y
MidnightBookGirl My Favorite Murder is my fav true crime podcast! For audiobooks, anything by Ann Rule. 6y
swishandflick Can't vouch for the audio specifically, but Helter Skelter is always the first true crime to come to mind. I've also heard good things about Columbine, which i very much want to read soon! 6y
TheWordJar I can‘t vouch for the audio of Columbine, but it is definitely worth a read in some format. 6y
ghosthost I can‘t vouch for the narrator since I read it in print, but I enjoyed 6y
Skyler One of Us: The Story of Anders Breivik and the Massacre in Norway was incredible. Absolutely devastating, but terrifically written. Can't speak for the audiobook version though, because I read the print edition. 6y
shanebeth In my tbr stack is Mindhunter, the basis of the Netflix series with the same name. The audio seems to be well-reviewed. 6y
JenReadsAlot I haven't done these on audio but really liked Devil in the White City, Mindhunter, Helter Skelter, the Iceman and In Cold Blood. I'm a fan of true crime! My Favorite Murder is a great Podcast! 6y
TricksyTails I listen to a ton of True Crime podcasts. Crimetown is awesome. Serial, My Favorite Murder, The Last Podcast on the Left are a few faves. Plus, they're free and always available! 6y
Juli @britt_brooke Have you read The Fact of a Body? I listened to it on audio and it was so good and totally wrecked me! 6y
Librarylady False Report: A True Story of Rape in America comes out in February. I really enjoyed it. 6y
ptkpepe98 I can definitely recommend Columbine, Killers of the Flower Moon, and if you can take getting really angry, Missoula. 6y
britt_brooke @ptkpepe98 I just finished Missoula today! 6y
AshleyHoss820 If you want to try podcasts, then I'd go with My Favorite Murder and Serial. 😊 6y
EmilyM I second Fact of a Body! 6y
ptkpepe98 @britt_brooke: I saw your post. I really like Krakauer's style, whether I read it or listen to it. It's not true crime, but if you like his writing, you might want to listen to Where Men Win Glory. It was really good. Sebastian Junger is also a really good writer. The first of his I read was The Perfect Storm. 6y
britt_brooke @ptkpepe98 That Krakauer was really good. I‘ve read all of his books except Eiger Dreams. He‘s amazing. 👍🏻 I haven‘t read any Junger, though, thanks! 6y
britt_brooke @TommieMarie74 Thanks! I‘ve read the Erik Larson, but Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is on my #TBR, but I forgot about it. Thanks for the reminder! 6y
britt_brooke @MidnightBookGirl Thank you! I‘ve never read any Ann Rule. 6y
britt_brooke @swishandflick I loved Helter Skelter (is that weird?)! I haven‘t read Columbine but I‘ve heard it good. I can‘t read school shooting books unfortunately. Gives me nightmares. (edited) 6y
britt_brooke @TheWordJar I‘ve heard Columbine is really good, but I just can‘t read school shooting books. I‘d like to, but they give me nightmares unfortunately. There was a shooting at my school when I was 16. Just hits too close. 😕 6y
britt_brooke @JenReadsAlot I haven‘t read Mindhunter or The Iceman - Thanks! 6y
britt_brooke @TricksyTails Thanks!! I haven‘t tried a podcast yet, but maybe soon. 👍🏻👍🏻 6y
britt_brooke @Juli @EmilyM Thanks, I‘m stacking Fact of a Body! 6y
britt_brooke @Librarylady Stacking, thank you! 6y
AshleyHoss820 My sister-in-law read Anne Rule's book about Ted Bundy. She loved it! 😊 6y
britt_brooke @Mdargusch Stacked all three - thanks! 6y
britt_brooke @AshleyHoss820 Stacked it - thank you! 6y
ptkpepe98 @Britt_brooke Antything Ann Rule writes is well researched, so if you like Krakauer, you should like her. I just remembered one I read that was really tough, but also good. The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace. Another good one is The Other Wes Moore. Happy Reading (listening). 6y
britt_brooke @ptkpepe98 Thank so much. I‘m looking forward to checking out her writing! (edited) 6y
BarbaraBB You will probably have read In Cold Blood but if not, then you should 😘 6y
britt_brooke @BarbaraBB I read it last year and it was so good. 👍🏻👍🏻 (edited) 6y
BarbaraBB I thought so too, that‘s why I had to mention it even though I was almost sure you would have read it! 6y
Carleneishere Midnight in the garden of good and evil! 6y

Because I‘m a weirdo who takes great pleasure spending time with my books, I decided to take a quick look at doing a #litsyatoz with the books already in my possession.
And as you can see above, I can do both Author & Title tracks without buying/borrowing anything but 3:
Author - X
Author - Y
Title - Z
That‘s where you all come in 😊
Recommendations???
Please and thank you! ❤️

tomes4gnomes @Sweettartlaura Ha! Yeah, that X author is especially challenging! 6y

Hey, lovely Litten friends! Just putting out some feelers. One of my Facebook friends started volunteering in a Muslim school‘s library in NM, and she discovered that their nonfiction books are all over thirty years old! There‘s no money in their budget to get new books for the library. So, this is my holiday season project this year: I‘m going to donate some books to this school. Would any of you be interested in contributing as well?

AThousandLives87 Of course!!! Just tell me what you need! 6y
LibrarianJen Hey I live in Abq! Check out the Laura Bush foundation for one, and there is also a scholastic warehouse. The public library has tons of resources, ebooks, online resources for kids/teens, call the main branch and ask for Veronica Lam, she does literacy outreach. Email me cartasporjen@Gmail.com if you want to chat further. 6y
readinginthedark @LibrarianJen Thanks! I know she‘s making an online resource list now, but I‘m not sure how accessible they are to the kids at school. I‘ll definitely talk to her about the literacy outreach and Bush foundation. Does the Scholastic warehouse do donations? 6y
See All 8 Comments
readinginthedark @AThousandLives87 Thank you! I‘m going to help her pursue some library and local options first, and then see what she still needs! I‘ll keep you posted! 6y
LibrarianJen I‘m not sure if they do donations. She would have to call and find out. I do know that they can host a scholastic bookfair and then they get an option of cash or scholastic dollars from the proceeds. Scholastic dollars would give them more money to go towards books. 6y
readinginthedark @LibrarianJen Good point; I don‘t know why I didn‘t think of that. Thanks! 6y
Jess_Read_This Count me in! How can I donate and what sort of books would they like? 6y
readinginthedark @Jess_Read_This Awesome, thank you! They need nonfiction for K-8th grade, I believe. I‘m going to wait until I get a little more info. on how she‘s proceeding, and then I‘ll give you guys some more details. 6y
