Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald
Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald | Therese Anne Fowler
"When I saw that Amazon Prime was unveiling its original pilot for Z, a biographical series based on Therese Anne Fowler's novel about Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald, I raised a wary eyebrow. . . But I was wrong, oh me of little faith. . . [I]t's an enveloping period piece, perfectly cast, and I would like to see the pilot green-lighted into a series so that we can see this romance go up like a rocket with one loud champagne pop and strew debris across mansion lawns and luxury hotel lobbies in its transcontinental path." —Vanity Fair I wish I could tell everyone who thinks we're ruined, Look closer...and you'll see something extraordinary, mystifying, something real and true. We have never been what we seemed. When beautiful, reckless Southern belle Zelda Sayre meets F. Scott Fitzgerald at a country club dance in 1918, she is seventeen years old and he is a young army lieutenant stationed in Alabama. Before long, the "ungettable" Zelda has fallen for him despite his unsuitability: Scott isn't wealthy or prominent or even a Southerner, and keeps insisting, absurdly, that his writing will bring him both fortune and fame. Her father is deeply unimpressed. But after Scott sells his first novel, This Side of Paradise, to Scribner's, Zelda optimistically boards a train north, to marry him in the vestry of St. Patrick's Cathedral and take the rest as it comes. What comes, here at the dawn of the Jazz Age, is unimagined attention and success and celebrity that will make Scott and Zelda legends in their own time. Everyone wants to meet the dashing young author of the scandalous novel—and his witty, perhaps even more scandalous wife. Zelda bobs her hair, adopts daring new fashions, and revels in this wild new world. Each place they go becomes a playground: New York City, Long Island, Hollywood, Paris, and the French Riviera—where they join the endless party of the glamorous, sometimes doomed Lost Generation that includes Ernest Hemingway, Sara and Gerald Murphy, and Gertrude Stein.Everything seems new and possible. Troubles, at first, seem to fade like morning mist. But not even Jay Gatsby's parties go on forever. Who is Zelda, other than the wife of a famous—sometimes infamous—husband? How can she forge her own identity while fighting her demons and Scott's, too? With brilliant insight and imagination, Therese Anne Fowler brings us Zelda's irresistible story as she herself might have told it.

Oh man, this book got me in ways I didn‘t expect. Adoration for Zelda and her talents, anger for a society set against women, sadness for what we missed out on from all that Zelda wanted to do but was held back from doing. I thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated this audiobook.

It took me awhile to wade through the story of F Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, but a worthwhile investment. Their chaotic and driven lives nearly destroyed them both and Scott died of a heart attack In his early 40‘s. Despite all the trappings their successes and failures brought them they stayed together. While not a biography, the author does a fine job of creating a realistic, readable, and believable storyline.

Let‘s talk about another one of my local libraries having a Fill-A-Bag for $5 book sale this weekend. Of course I had to hit that one up, also. Pictures later!

This clips along with a brisk, engaging style but I struggled to raise much emotional investment in the characters, in much the same way I struggle with much of Fitzgerald's characters, in that they reflect so much of their writer. The self-centred, obsessed and yet feckless nature of Scott is vastly wearying. It's nice to see Zelda get more credit but I was still largely unmoved.

Very well-researched historical fiction about the relationship between F. Scott Fitzgerald and Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald. This story is told from Zelda‘s perspective and is therefore a more sympathetic portrayal of her character than I‘ve seen elsewhere. I loved getting her side of the story. And reading this right after The Paris Wife makes me feel entirely justified in never reading another book by Ernest Hemingway.

Rachbb3 This is one of my favorite books. 8mo

A well written book that im glad I read, though the constant laser focus on an abusive relationship in such a sexist society was incredibly difficult to read, not not-worth-reading, but not enjoyable. I really disagreed with the book‘s decision to end with Scott‘s words not Zelda‘s. Having said that, Zelda herself was so vivid and real and I could tell the writer loved her as much as I do. I‘m glad I read it.

Not a 100% flawless book so far but I‘m SO HERE FOR the take no prisoners depiction of F Scott Fitzgerald as every boring literary boy I met at university. I love some of his books a lot but a lot of biographies have confirmed him as a pretentious fragile little boy in real life.... I like a novel that‘s not ashamed to point out how ridiculous one of the greatest novelists of the twentieth century is.

LauraBeth I‘m so over all of the Fitzgerald and The Great Gatsby worship. 9mo
Emilymdxn @LauraBeth so with you, but I‘d still take him over Hemingway any day of the week and twice on Sundays 9mo

This one started off brilliantly , but I‘m almost half way & need to take a break ... “I‘ve come to wonder whether artists in particular seek out hard times the way flowers turn their faces toward the sun.”

I loved this fictionalized first-person account. Such a fascinating time period! I didn‘t know much about Zelda, or the Fitzgerald‘s relationship, going in. I quite liked the Zelda from this story. The Scott? Not so much. Though it does make me want to read something of his other than Gatsby (which I didn‘t really like).

I love the attention to the jazz age. How Zelda walks into a club and the jazz music was different than she expected and made her feel different. How Fitzgerald recognized that cultural shift and incorporated it into his work. How their lives circled around the music.

Did I mention I love the jazz age and secretly wish I was born in that time 😁

Also, I'm surprised no one saw the signs that she needed mental care in Zelda sooner.

Not sure how I feel about this one. If I could do something between a “pick” and a “so-so” I would. I listened to the audiobook, and while I liked the narrator overall and I liked Zelda, I couldn‘t stand Scott. His dialogue felt kind of stilted and forced and I‘m not sure if that‘s the fault of the narrator or the author. That said, it‘s still a fascinating book about love, alcoholism, mental illness, and a woman‘s place in the early 20th century.
