1️⃣Hmmm, I‘m trying to think of a character who lives in an adorable English cottage, and reads/drinks tea/potters in their garden all day and maybe makes jam and has a lot of animal companions. Any ideas? I basically want to live in Brambly Hedge or the Shire.
2️⃣Airplane, What About Bob?, The Sword in the Stone, Ghostbusters.
3️⃣Thunderstorms, dogs and cats, a new book, the BBC.

I‘ve been AWOL lately because I feel really stuck in my reading. I‘m 3/4 of the way done with Iron Gold and The Stranger Beside Me, but for whatever reason I‘m just not enjoying either book. And yet I can‘t seem to bail — I‘ve come so far! I‘m at about 450/600 pgs and I‘ve never abandoned a book that far in. But the remaining 150 pgs feel interminable. What do you do when you feel like “A Wedged Bear in Great Tightness” in your reading life?

Bourriquet76 Old favorite or something super light (cozy mystery or chick lit) 6y
tomes4gnomes @Bourriquet76 My current two are VERY heavy (in different ways) and something lighter, a world in which I can gleefully escape, does sound so much better right now. 6y
TricksyTails I usually switch to a graphic novel/comic. Get in some laughs. If that doesn‘t work, then I try a different medium like audiobooks or podcasts. Do you listen to any audio? 6y
See All 12 Comments
Andrew65 I tend to return to a favourite author or book, which is light and easy reading. 6y
tomes4gnomes @TricksyTails A graphic novel is a great idea. I‘ve been dabbling in audiobooks, but I struggle to finish them in the 2 wk loan period from my library. I‘m currently listening to All Things Bright and Beautiful and it‘s totally delightful, so maybe I should just spend more time with that. I think the real problem is that I have tons of books I‘d rather be reading than the 2 I‘m stuck on now, but can‘t seem to give myself permission to quit them. 6y
tomes4gnomes @Andrew65 Yes, it would definitely help to switch to something that will remind me I actually like reading, lol. ☺️ 6y
DGRachel You‘ve already been given the advice I had, but I will just add that if you‘re 450 pages into Iron Gold and you still aren‘t feeling it - BAIL NOW! The remaining 150 pages aren‘t going to be any better. I read it, and liked it, but it was definitely a slog. Pierce is practically building a whole new world and just setting up the rest of the new trilogy. Nothing gets resolved. Nothing. And Dark Age is going to hurt worse than Golden Son, I fear. 6y
tomes4gnomes @DGRachel Thanks for the advice re: Iron Gold. I‘m such a huge fan of the Red Rising trilogy and it‘s making me feel stubborn about this one — why don‘t I like it?! 😫 I was so excited to read it, but I‘m struggling with the shift to multiple POVs, my dislike of Ephraim and Lysander, and the fact that it now feels more like a political cage-fight between titans rather than the awesome rise of misfits and underdogs. ☹️ 6y
DGRachel I‘m right there with you. I struggled with the multiple POVs, HATE Lysander with the heat of a thousand dying suns, and have never wanted to slap Darrow more. I‘m a huge fan of the original trilogy, too, but you almost have to divorce the originals from Iron Gold. Good luck, whatever you decide. Maybe just set it aside for a while and come back closer to the Dark Age release or come back then the whole trilogy is out. 6y
Sharpeipup This is how I‘ve felt lately. Stuck in a reading rut. 6y
TricksyTails I‘m the same way. It pained me to give up on Strata and The Dark Side of the Sun but they were putting me into such a slump. I tell myself I‘m setting them aside for now and can always revisit them another time. At least that‘s what I *try* to convince myself to believe. 😆 Hope you find something that gets you out of this slump soon! 6y
tomes4gnomes @TricksyTails @DGRachel Thanks for your ideas! I‘ve “set aside” the true crime book (since I own it I can at least pretend I might go back to it eventually) and I‘m just trying to buckle down and finish Iron Gold since it‘s a library book. But I‘m gonna go to the library today so I can have an exciting new stack waiting in the wings. 📚😍🤤 6y

I've trudged through 60 pages about the early life (grandparents, parents, childhood) of Jim Jones and it's just not interesting to me. GR reviews indicate I've got 300 more pages before he even moves to Guyana. Oof. I'm realizing I don't actually want an excruciatingly detailed full-life biography of Jones so much as I want to read a detailed account of what happened at the Peoples Temple. I‘m bailing on this one. 🤷‍♀️

AlaMich I may or may not have already suggested this to you (I suggest it to everyone interested in the People‘s Temple), but Raven is an incredible book. It‘s all first person accounts by members, witnesses, family members, all kinds of people. It might be hard to find, but if you‘re really interested, it‘s worth it! 6y
tomes4gnomes @AlaMich Thank you so much for the recommendation! I haven‘t heard of it but will check it out ASAP. 👍 6y
Mdargusch This was a tough one for me too. But I slogged through and skimmed a little until he moved everybody to California. 6y
tomes4gnomes @Mdargusch I was really tempted to do just that! But with 3 library holds waiting for me, I feel pressed for time. Who knows, maybe I‘ll pick it up again in the future and just skip over the middle 😱. 6y
Suet624 I listened to the book on audio and loved it. Maybe audio would make it easier to get through. 6y

My expectations were for a kind of quirky, possibly heart-warming story aimed at book lovers — maybe something like A.J. Fikry or The Readers of Broken Wheel or Mr. Penumbra. This is not that. The overall feel of this story is . . . heavy. I'm not sure how else to describe it. I'm glad I read it, and the mystery at the heart of the story was certainly interesting, but be prepared for a rather gritty and sad tale. 3.5/5 ⭐️

Persuasion (Revised) | Jane Austen

Thanks for the generous giveaway, @GypsyKat — I love all things Jane Austen.

My favorite novel, character and relationship are all contained in one book: Persuasion. I relate to Anne Elliott more than any other Austen heroine, and her relationship with Captain Wentworth is, for me, the most serious, deep and bittersweet. I also loved the movie adaptation with Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds. ❤️

My favorite read so far this year. I felt such a kinship with Eleanor: the weight and the safety of her immense solitude; the way her speech patterns reflect classic novels more than modern slang; her difficulty with small talk and social norms; the spikiness of her emotional armor. Recommended for fans of A Man Called Ove. Dark subject matter at its heart, yet the story has a wonderful lightness and humor. 5/5 ⭐️

Believe the hype, it‘s a fantastic book. In a better world, it would be required reading in high school. And I'm not a YA fan. I avoid reading about teen romances/friendships, conversations via text, proms, sporting events, and don't even get me started on love triangles, but, while some of these elements are present here in small doses, the larger story is incredibly powerful and engaging. It's 5-star YA, and 4-star for me personally.

2BR02B I have a teacher friend trying to get it added to the curriculum, but there are objections to the "explicit language." It's pretty pathetic. 6y
tomes4gnomes @2BR02B As I read it I did think that all the swearing was going to provide a convenient excuse for those who want to keep it out of kids‘ hands — sad to hear that is indeed happening, but a big cheer for your teacher friend‘s efforts! 6y
Christine11 I really need to get to this one soon - everyone seems to love it ! @2BR02B That‘s so annoying for your teacher friend - I very much doubt there are many teenagers who have never heard explicit language - rubbish excuse! 6y

A very solid thriller that helped me to beat a reading slump. I managed to finish it in one day which is unusual for me and a testament to the page-turniness (ridiculous new word, you‘re welcome). Fair warning, there were a few details that were so disturbing they‘ve haunted me the last few days. I like the adrenaline of thrillers but I‘m also sensitive about certain subjects, so I really should have skipped those bits when I saw them coming.

I have three bookshelves, but two are in constant flux because they‘re full of TBRs. These are the first and last on my shelf of favorites. The Gnomes book was given to my grandparents in 1977 and I loved poring over its pages as I grew up. It‘s responsible for my gnome obsession. The Passage is my favorite dystopian novel.

Laura317 I had that same book. It was such fun to curl up on a chair and read. 6y

Magpie Murders | Anthony Horowitz

Mehso-so

As a Horowitz fan I had high expectations, and that probably set me up for disappointment. I wanted to start my year with a rip-roaring mystery, and the first chapter did indeed make me feel like I was in for a roller coaster ride. Instead, the next 300-400 (!) pages were more like a gentle, leisurely country drive. Not unpleasant if that's what you signed up for, but a bit frustrating when you have adrenaline at the ready. Cont. 👇

tomes4gnomes The book within a book structure was more intellectually clever than viscerally enjoyable and I found I didn't much care who committed the murders. I normally read a book in about 5-7 days, but this one took a trudging 3 weeks. I just wasn't compelled to keep those pages turning. Again, my own expectations may have been partially to blame. 6y
tomes4gnomes I enjoy Agatha Christie and a good cozy as much as the next mystery fan, but Magpie Murders was simply much longer, slower and more staid than I had hoped. Frankly, I'm relieved I'm finally finished so that I can move on to something more exciting. 6y

Time for #ConfessionsofaBookAddict: I over-indulged after the holidays, in a big way. This is the first #bookhaul of three, thanks to the Christmas generosity of friends and family. I could stare at this stack all day. 😍🤓📚🎁 #bookmail
P.S. Sleeping Giants and Stillhouse Lake are both #blameitonlitsy buys.

Clwojick ❤️️❤️️❤️️I love Heart and Brian &a Sarah Andersons books! ❤️️❤️️❤️️ 6y
tomes4gnomes @Clwojick I‘ve seen their comics all over online, but these are my first purchases of their books — very excited! 6y
EclecticBookLover Big Mushy Happy Lump is so good!! 😀 6y

WarpedSweetness Still house Lake was so good! It wasn't my typical reading, but I tried it because of Litsy and loved it. I've been eyeing up The Book of the Unnamed Midwife. 6y
tomes4gnomes @WarpedSweetness I‘m glad you recommend Stillhouse — I love a Good page-turner and I‘m hoping this will fit the bill, and the sequel sounds great, too. Unnamed Midwife was recommended to me the other day by a fellow Red Rising trilogy and dystopian fan. I‘ll review it here if I get to it any time soon (tooooo many books!). 6y
WarpedSweetness @tomes4gnomes Stillhouse Lake was a real page turner for me, and it was really thrilling. I've been hearing that sequel was just as good. I'll keep an eye out if you're able to review it! I love dystopian stories. 6y
Nute I like finding out about books that I hadn‘t heard of prior to someone‘s book haul. Definitely checking out Stillhouse Lake and The Book of the Unnamed Midwife. Already enjoyed Big Mushy Happy Lump, All the Single Ladies, A Wrinkle in Time and Sleeping Giants. I hope you enjoy all of your book discoveries. Nice selections! 6y
tomes4gnomes @Nute Thanks, I‘m glad you recommend 4 of these titles, I must be on the right track! 👌 6y

Thanks for doing a giveaway, @abbsinwonderland !
#AbbsGiveawayWonderland

I struggle with severe anxiety and depression, so my close relationships with my mom and younger brother are what motivate me to keep putting one foot in front of the other. I also find joy/inspiration in animals, books and my long term friendships.

Since I‘m new to Litsy, I‘ll just tag 3 Littens I‘ve interacted with in various comment threads.

Wbabdullah Aw @tomes4gnomes! You made me smile when I‘d probably otherwise be depressed! I have issues with anxiety but have learned how to control it so I don‘t rack up a whole bunch of hospital bills due to panic attacks 😂🤣. I can laugh now but a year ago, I wouldn‘t be laughing so much. Feeling special to be one of your fave Littens—tag me anytime for a virtual hug!! 🤗 6y
[DELETED] 3803335244 Family & Friends are wonderful ❤️ 6y
Librariana Aawww! @tomes4gnomes, I send you all the virtual hugs! 💖💛💜💖💛💜 ( 6y

tomes4gnomes @Wbabdullah @Librariana Well darn it, now my eyes are welling up from your sweet messages! I‘m trying to read here, and the tears aren‘t helping, lol! 😭But seriously, thank you both for such kind words of support, and likewise I am here for you, too, virtual hugs and actual empathy happily provided as needed. Bookish people are some of the very best people. Grateful! 6y
Wbabdullah ❤️😍😘 6y
TommieMarie74 @tomes4gnomes Thank you so much for tagging us and being so open with us. I also struggle with anxiety and depression. Knowing we are not alone and can rely on each other during those especially hard times is really wonderful. I‘m here if you ever need a friend. 💕💗💕💗💕💗 6y
tomes4gnomes @TommieMarie74 Oh, you are so incredibly kind! Isn‘t it amazing that when we let ourselves be a little bit vulnerable and share the things we struggle with, we find out we are far from alone and are in fact part of a large community of lovely people, facing similar trials, who would happily show up for one another? Thank you! (edited) 6y
TommieMarie74 @tomes4gnomes That is so true. So often I internalize, not saying a word, because “how could anyone else understand?” When we open up a little, wonderful things like this can happen. I‘m so glad you were willing to be vulnerable today and inspire us to be vulnerable too. 6y
abbsinwonderland Welcome to Litsy! I also suffer from the same and know how difficult it can be. I'm glad it sounds like you have a great support system! Thanks for entering! 💜 6y
WarpedSweetness A little late, but welcome to Litsy! I also struggle with severe anxiety. I'm glad you have a support system; that can be so important. Also, I love your username! Fun fact about me, my nickname in high school was 'Gnome'. 6y
tomes4gnomes @WarpedSweetness @abbsinwonderland Thank you so much for your kind and welcoming comments. I am beginning to see that there are so many of us struggling with anxiety, but part of that anxiety consists of the hard work we expend hiding our distress, trying to always seem “normal.” So it‘s a rather wonderful thing when we say “me, too” to each other and form a community. Thank you! 🙏 6y
tomes4gnomes @WarpedSweetness Oh, and I absolutely love that Gnome was your nickname. At some point I want to put together a post with pics of all my gnome stuff and the book that started it all, when I was a small child: 6y

Spinning Silver | Naomi Novik
post image

#HumpDayPost @MinDea
1️⃣ The paintings were done by my grandmother in the 60s. She passed in 1989 so I love having these to remember her by. I also collect decor with gnomes, deer & bookish themes.
2️⃣ 2018 Reading Goals: Read 60 books, POPSUGAR, MtTBR, use the library, bail without guilt.
3️⃣ Glasses. Can‘t touch my eyeballs *shudder*.
4️⃣ Oceans.
5️⃣ I‘m definitely on the Iron Gold bandwagon but also really looking forward to Spinning Silver.

Wbabdullah Wow! Your grandma was so talented! I‘m an art teacher turned homeschooling mom—totally feeling your grandma‘s vibe! 6y
tomes4gnomes @Wbabdullah Thank you! She was a painter for most of her life, lots of different phases (some not my cup of tea), but I really love these two. Photo doesn‘t do justice since they‘re both large, framed canvases that make a lot of impact. What kind of art do you create? What did you teach — general art classes, or a specific area of expertise? My mom is very artistic as well, but I think it skipped a generation in me, haha. 6y
Wbabdullah I taught general art to kids, but as far as my heart is concerned, though I‘m trained in a lot of different media, the slow-going art is my fave—watercolor, textiles (all of em—knitting, crochet, weaving, basketry), and pottery. I learned with anxiety that I‘m less anxious when I do what I love. So now I write, read and make art more to be happy. 6y
Wbabdullah Or at least in some sort of managed mood state, lol 6y
tomes4gnomes @Wbabdullah I would love to see pics of your artwork sometime, if you don‘t mind sharing. I am a rudimentary knitter (nothing but scarves) and want to learn to crochet so I can make amigurumi. Reading is my best tool for managing anxiety, but I‘m expanding to #audiocoloring with my adult coloring books since I adore working with vivid color and find the whole process completely meditative. Tangent: Are you on Goodreads? I‘m Shasta Halley over there. (edited) 6y

I can only add my voice to the chorus of praise. Immersed in this enchanting fairytale for grownups, I felt a warm tingling at the back of my skull, a flutter in the belly, and a childlike excitement. I wanted to inhabit this world, and it became so vivid for me that I know I need only close my eyes to return there. Wonderful mythical/folkloric beings and a rebellious heroine. A slow start, but by page 90 I was hooked. For fans of Uprooted.

minkyb Lovely review! 6y
[DELETED] 3803335244 I need to read Uprooted! I loved this book for the main character she is just awesome. Totally rebellious against rules of society at the time. I adored every Russian fairytale creature. Great review. Definitely one of my favorite books. I read the book & bought my daughter the audio. She loved it too. Audio was nice because I learned how to pronounce the Russian. 6y
tomes4gnomes @ForeverNerdy If you love this then I definitely think you‘ll enjoy Uprooted — highly recommend! I hadn‘t thought of checking this out on audio but I think I would very much like to curl up in front of a roaring fire and listen to this tale. Magical! 6y

@Cinfhen Congratulations on your Litsy milestone! Here is my #PickPanBailSoSo for 2017 (I bail a lot more often these days, but rarely pan, probably because I already bailed!):

Pick: The Crossing Places by Elly Griffiths
Pan: Ninth City Burning by J. Patrick Black
Bail: The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch
So-so: Before the Fall by Noah Hawley

Thanks for celebrating with a giveaway — so nice of you!

Cinfhen I also had very few pans, probably for the same reason❣️Although sometimes I‘ve gone back to a bail and it ends up becoming a five star read...that happened this year with 6y

The Mysteries | Lisa Tuttle

My Top 17 Read in 2017 (started by @Cinfhen I think?). Mysteries abound. This is why I‘m finally going to do a reading challenge next year — I really want to diversify. #17in2017

Cinfhen Sometimes a certain genre is just the perfect fit! Although I see u have a GN I've been wondering about 6y
britt_brooke Nice! 6y
tomes4gnomes @Cinfhen I love Roz Chast and this book is one I recommend to almost everyone. It is difficult subject matter — aging parents, death, grief — handled so well. 6y
See All 9 Comments
Andrew65 I love House of Silk and The Crossing Places. 6y
Tamra I‘ve been meaning to get to House of Silk for awhile now! 6y
Wbabdullah What challenges are you gonna do? 6y
tomes4gnomes @Wbabdullah This is my first year doing any reading challenges other than the standard Goodreads set-number-of-books-to-read goal. I‘m definitely doing Popsugar, but I‘m intrigued by so many others and I may be getting in over my head by adding Read Harder, Modern Mrs. Darcy, and Mount TBR. It all depends how many books I can manage to read this year since I‘m rather slow. What about you? 6y
Wbabdullah I‘m doing #dystopianblues as a swap (my first swap ever and probably last cuz Lord knows I don‘t need to be shopping for books right now) and #litsypassport where I‘m reading myself around the world based on the number of countries I selected and a random generator of countries by a fellow Litten! (Sorry, that was a mouthful!) I‘m eyeing that pop sugar though...I probably will join 6y
tomes4gnomes I love dystopian/post-apocalyptic. Let me know if you read some great ones from the swap. A friend just recommended a few new-to-me titles the other day: The Book of the Unnamed Midwife, and the Unwind series. Litsy passport sounds truly challenging and enlightening, a worthy goal! 6y

I‘m going to try:

🎄Christmas at Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons
🎅🏻Hot Zone by Steven Konkoly (page-turner, I hope)
🎁The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden

I‘ll also continue A Christmas Carol on the Serial Reader app, and the audiobook of Bossypants.

#HolidayReadingGoals

Being new to Litsy, I can scarcely comprehend how @erinreads has reached her #50kgiveaway — is she an ageless/eternal Litsy Elder? Quite possibly. At any rate, Born A Crime is on my must-read list for 2018 (and for #pop18), but I don‘t own a copy. I am also trying to read more graphic novels and My Favorite Thing is Monsters looks reeaaally good. Thanks, Erin!

3.5*: I enjoyed the 1st book in this mystery series where the intriguing heroine is a psychotherapist in London. It was a page-turner, and I do plan to continue the series. But I‘m a stickler, so points off since I guessed twists too far in advance of the characters (you know when you yell at them for not spotting the obvious?) and had to suspend disbelief since no real therapist would behave this way and cross these boundaries. Good, not great.
