Beartown
Beartown: A Novel | Fredrik Backman
From the New York Times bestselling author of A Man Called Ove, My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You Shes Sorry, and Britt-Marie Was Here, comes a poignant, charming novel about a forgotten town fractured by scandal, and the amateur hockey team that might just change everything. Winning a junior ice hockey championship might not mean a lot to the average person, but it means everything to the residents of Beartown, a community slowly being eaten alive by unemployment and the surrounding wilderness. A victory like this would draw national attention to the ailing town: it could attract government funding and an influx of talented athletes who would choose Beartown over the big nearby cities. A victory like this would certainly mean everything to Amat, a short, scrawny teenager who is treated like an outcast everywhere but on the ice; to Kevin, a star player just on the cusp of securing his golden future in the NHL; and to Peter, their dedicated general manager whose own professional hockey career ended in tragedy. At first, it seems like the team might have a shot at fulfilling the dreams of their entire town. But one night at a drunken celebration following a key win, something happens between Kevin and the general managers daughterand the next day everything seems to have changed. Accusations are made and, like ripples on a pond, they travel through all of Beartown, leaving no resident unaffected. With so much riding on the success of the team, the line between loyalty and betrayal becomes difficult to discern. At last, it falls to one young man to find the courage to speak the truth that it seems no one else wants to hear. Fredrik Backman knows that we are forever shaped by the places we call home, and in this emotionally powerful, sweetly insightful story, he explores what can happen when we carry the heavy weight of other people's dreams on our shoulders.

Though I have read/listened to most of Backman‘s other books, the hockey focus here always turned me off- but when the publisher invited me to read the third book in this trilogy AND my book club picked it to discuss, I knew I had to first read the first two books first. And I ended up being totally enraptured by the story of this whole town! The large cast size does slow things down in the beginning, but by the end, I couldn‘t put it down!

cassareada I loooooove Beartown. Benji is definitely my favorite. And Ramona. 2d
TheBookgeekFrau I felt the same way about the whole hockey vibe until a friend said "Trust me, you'll love it." She was SO right! The other two books don't interest me, and I'm probably being stubbornly ignorant, but I just feel like the story was so perfectly told that anything more will ruin it (like the whole Me Before You fiasco). 2d
rwmg I abandoned it after the first 30 pages or so, not interested in hockey, but maybe I should give it another go 1d

TorieStorieS @cassareada I totally agree!! Both are total scene-stealers!! I also love Amat and Bobo! 1d
TorieStorieS @TheBookgeekFrau I‘m about a quarter of the way through the second one and it really just picks up not long after the ending- there‘s some initial redundancy but it‘s probably not as noticeable if you don‘t read them so consecutively. It‘s nice not having to say goodbye to them all just yet! 1d
TorieStorieS @rwmg I was tempted to do the same in the beginning- the large cast size and the hockey focus made it slow-going at first, but then I just fell in love with so many of the characters! Maybe give it another 30 pages or so and see if you feel any differently! 1d
cassareada @rwmg @TheBookgeekFrau i say stick it through. By the time I finished The Winners, I was sobbing like a baby (like snot and tears caked to my face) at 9 different parts. And one of the times was on a plane. I love this trilogy so much. It's so much more than the hockey. 1d
cassareada @TorieStorieS yes!! Bobo and Amat are just sweeties. That is a pure friendship. 1d
TheBookgeekFrau @cassareada @TorieStorieS You guys are giving my stubbornness a run for its money 😂 1d
cassareada @TheBookgeekFrau 😂😂😂 I'm sorry!! 1d
TorieStorieS @TheBookgeekFrau You will definitely have to keep us updated on what you decide to do!! 1d
TheBookgeekFrau @TorieStorieS Of course!! I might have even stopped by the Friends of the Library bookstore on my way home from work with those two books in mind 😬🤣🤣 23h

I am so sad that I waited so long to read this. I wish I would have listened more closely when people said it‘s about a hockey town, and not heard it‘s about hockey. Because it‘s about high schoolers and relationships and betrayal and parents and trust and belief. Please do check TW and even though it crosses into painful places, ultimately this book is beautifully about human beings and the hurt we cause but also the healing.

Beartown is hanging its last hope for survival on the junior hockey team: if they win, the town stands a chance of not quietly disappearing into the forest. The second half of the book was worth getting through the somewhat sluggish beginning and is a discussion-worthy look at several social issues, including herd mentality: “And when enough people are quiet for long enough, a handful of voices can give the impression that everyone is screaming.”

This is an amazing and devastating book. Sometimes it was a little too real, I found myself anxious as I read, which just shows how realistic and engaging the writing was.

I would recommend this but it was an intense read. I read it on one sitting as I wasn't sure I could come back if I stopped.

Andrew65 Loved this book and it‘s follow-up. Waiting now to read the third one that has recently been published. 2mo

It‘s only a game. It only resolves tiny, insignificant things. Such as who gets validation. Who gets listened to. It allocates power and draws boundaries and turns some people into stars and others into spectators. That‘s all.

Just an unbelievable book. Backman is an absolute genius. There are so many controversies in this book that are dealt with head on and in a manner that is not glossed over.
It deals with a town‘s acceptance of group think and it‘s complicity in purging individuality. It poses the question of how far would you go to win and/or to fit in? Support a crime? Blame the victim? It is a fitting read after finishing A Man named Ove. Pure genius.

This is my second book from Backman and it‘s another great one. At first his style wasn‘t to my liking, but the more I read the more I found myself falling in love. The way he puts the best and worst of humanity on display is captivating. This back cover blurb describes this one so much more eloquently than I could. This was my #doublespin for July (I think…)

Prairiegirl_reading The first 100 pages are tough but then I couldn‘t put it down. The next in the series is better in my opinion. 💙 6mo

This book made me think about the way people are often depersonalized in particular situations. I suppose that‘s one of the objectives in team sports though, so is it a bad thing to do or is it appropriate in these situations? In the book you always know the truth but that‘s not always the case in reality. Anyway, it‘s interesting and I recommend it.

Never thought I‘d read a book about ice hockey but heard this was great so I read it. The story of the players, parents, coaches, politicians in a small town that lived for high school hockey. Questions or morality, love, friendship, loyalty and justice are explored in this novel. Great characters that I can picture in my mind. Will start watching the mini series on HBO tonight.
