Beartown
Beartown: A Novel | Fredrik Backman
From the New York Times bestselling author of A Man Called Ove, My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You Shes Sorry, and Britt-Marie Was Here, comes a poignant, charming novel about a forgotten town fractured by scandal, and the amateur hockey team that might just change everything. Winning a junior ice hockey championship might not mean a lot to the average person, but it means everything to the residents of Beartown, a community slowly being eaten alive by unemployment and the surrounding wilderness. A victory like this would draw national attention to the ailing town: it could attract government funding and an influx of talented athletes who would choose Beartown over the big nearby cities. A victory like this would certainly mean everything to Amat, a short, scrawny teenager who is treated like an outcast everywhere but on the ice; to Kevin, a star player just on the cusp of securing his golden future in the NHL; and to Peter, their dedicated general manager whose own professional hockey career ended in tragedy. At first, it seems like the team might have a shot at fulfilling the dreams of their entire town. But one night at a drunken celebration following a key win, something happens between Kevin and the general managers daughterand the next day everything seems to have changed. Accusations are made and, like ripples on a pond, they travel through all of Beartown, leaving no resident unaffected. With so much riding on the success of the team, the line between loyalty and betrayal becomes difficult to discern. At last, it falls to one young man to find the courage to speak the truth that it seems no one else wants to hear. Fredrik Backman knows that we are forever shaped by the places we call home, and in this emotionally powerful, sweetly insightful story, he explores what can happen when we carry the heavy weight of other people's dreams on our shoulders.

Normally I love Fredrik Backman, but I got about a hundred pages into this and I'd already had more than enough ice hockey talk. Did not care and DNF'ed it.

Never thought I‘d read a book about ice hockey but heard this was great so I read it. The story of the players, parents, coaches, politicians in a small town that lived for high school hockey. Questions or morality, love, friendship, loyalty and justice are explored in this novel. Great characters that I can picture in my mind. Will start watching the mini series on HBO tonight.

A powerful, stop-and-make-you-think story about what the culture of a club or place is, and the effect this can have on its individuals.

Hockey isn‘t just a sport for the people of Beartown, it‘s a way of life.
Through heartache, joy, rebellion and loyalty Backman leaves you wanting more. Thus was a difficult story to tell, but one that needs to be told.

I finished the last 270 pages of this one in one go. Now I'm sitting here with my eyes all red and puffy after sobbing through the final 20 pages. This is my 3rd Backman, and I think my favorite. He really knows how to rip my heart out, that's for sure.

This was ok for me I liked it but didn‘t love it the narrative made it seem slow and monotonous at times, yet thrown in we‘re bits and pieces that kept you interested enough to keep reading. This was a atmospheric and character driven story that wound and unwound, and had a satisfying ending.

Another good one from Mr. Backman. I liked some of the repeating phrases throughout. I liked the puzzle pieces you had to fit together. I liked that it's a story about a town that loves hockey, but it's still so much more than that. I would have liked more about Benji, I think he was my favourite character.
Anyway, I'll read Us Against You next.
I know there's a 3rd book being released, so something to look forward to in the future.

Unpopular opinion, but I thought this book was overly sentimental and saccharine. The perspectives/actions of the boys were also much more well-developed and believable than the perspectives/actions of the girls, which I did not appreciate.

It's Friday Night Lights, but with hockey, except not really. It's about adults putting all their hopes and happiness on the kids of their small town sports team...but sort of not exactly. It's about what it means to be a girl in this small town...or anywhere. I don't want to give anything from the twisty, dark, cold novel away. But it was remarkable and I loved it.

4.5 stars! For the first 150 pages or so it didn't feel like much was happening "It's a hockey town, alright, we get it", but then I realized @backmansk is laying out the characters and the setting for what's to come. And that was well worth the wait! Beautiful, heart wrenching and throughly engrossing story that had me in tears on several occasions. Being a parent of a teenage girl definitely had something to do with that!

Wow. Devastating read. Backman does an incredible job fleshing out an extensive cast of characters that belong to a struggling-to-thrive community. Beartown is a hockey town, but to what extent? This book is definitely the most heartbreaking book I've read in a while; I cried a few times! @TheAromaofBooks #BookSpinBingo April read ✔

TheAromaofBooks Great progress!! I was really impressed with this one when I read it. Backman does such a great job of not excusing the actions of certain characters, yet still making it possible to see their perspective, so the whole story becomes much more thoughtful, going beyond the simplicity of “bad guy/good guy“ to show how, in many ways, everyone was complicit in what happened. 8mo

I have mixed feelings about this book, and do not doubt it gave me lots of feelings. Most of those feelings are tied up in how much people suck, but not Benji. Benji is the best and needs to be protected at all costs. I loved the heck out of this complicated, but incredibly loyal teen.
I think what was written about and how people handled it is incredibly true to form👇👇

IhoardBOOKS I don‘t know if it‘s the author‘s writing style, how it was translated, or both but there was something about the style of the book that wasn‘t quite working for me. I felt removed a lot of it and then it felt like it was trying to draw me in only to put me back on the outside again before I was truly drawn in. 9mo

This book broke my heart. From young kids killing themselves for parental approval or team acceptance to the parents who are aching w/the realization that they can‘t protect their children, there was so much to process. It has been a long time since a book made me cry.

Backman is so good at creating people who dance in the gray area. You make assumptions & then on the next page you empathizing w/them. It‘s not an easy book, but it will stay w/me.

AvidReader25 Love these quotes:

“Life as a teenager seems to have acted like sand paper on Dana. She‘s getting smoother and smoother, smaller and smaller.”

“Being a parent makes you feel like a blanket that‘s always too small. No matter how hard you try to cover everyone, there‘s always someone who‘s freezing.”

A novel that deals with important issues but on a mainstream level (reminded me a bit of Jodi Picoult books). I loved the beginning, the slow build up and getting to know the characters but the latter half didn‘t have the same impact on me. I was definitely just rushing through, & the end was too neatly wrapped up and put together for my taste. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
