The Enchanted April
The Enchanted April | Elizabeth Von Arnim
Elizabeth von Arnim's novel tells the story of four dissimilar women in 1920s England who leave their damp and rainy environs to go on a holiday to a secluded coastal castle in Italy. Mrs. Arbuthnot and Mrs. Wilkins, who belong to the same ladies' club but have never spoken, become acquainted after reading an advertisement for villas for rent in a newspaper. They find some common ground in that both are struggling to make the best of unhappy marriages. Having decided to seek other ladies to help share expenses, they reluctantly take on the waspish, elderly Mrs. Fisher and the stunning, but aloof, Lady Caroline Dester. The four women come together at the castle and find rejuvenation in the tranquil beauty of their surroundings, rediscovering hope and love.

‘A gentle and romantic comedy of manners set against the backdrop of a country still reeling from WW1.‘ Four frustrated Hampstead women set off on a #holiday, a journey of self-discovery to Italy. ‘Together under the Mediterranean sun, the women clash and then begin to bond and bloom, until men once again upset the balance.‘ The novel has been adapted to various films and Broadway.
I have stacked that pretty edition. 💙

“Those who appreciate wisteria and sunshine” so reads the newspaper advertisement that begins this 1920s story of friendship and love. A little misunderstanding, a little farce and the beautiful background of a Medieval Italian castle.

Even though I didn't devote the time to this book that I felt like it deserved, I loved it!! Arnim's novel definitely caught me off guard with it's awkward moments. This is definitely a book that needs to be read on a vacation or during the summer, without distractions.

Although the writing is lovely, I have concluded that I am not a fan of classic literature. The Austen-like writing isn‘t my jam but I do appreciate the art and beauty of it. The story begins when two women decide to take a month‘s holiday at a quaint castle to spice up their life. They answer an ad and two more women join them on the journey. I thought the plot was slow and for a book so short it took me a long time to finish this one.

If you‘re looking for lots of exciting action, skip it. Most of the “action” takes place in the characters themselves. The author shows us how their thinking changes, and we get a sneak peek into everyone‘s heads. The interesting thing about this is that some characters‘ motives are not what everyone else thinks they are. ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 #doubledip

A classic novel originally published in 1923 has totally captured my admiration almost 100 years later. I absolutely adore these four unrelated, British woman who decide to spend the month of April in an old Italian hillside castle for four weeks of rest and relaxation. Each comes to the adventure from different social backgrounds and each walks away with different insights and perspectives whether they wanted to or not. Delightful!

Such a lovely gentle read, which has ignited a passion to spend a month in Italy. I was surprised how the characters grew on me and I became horridly defensive of their hope and dreams, wishing that they came true.

Whilst the scenic descriptions did not delight me like those nature passages by L. M. Montgomery, I was still transported by the floral drenched aromas and sparkling sea vistas of San Salvatore.

CocoReads @RealLifeReading I know it's no pressure--I have a lot of fun with it so I hate that life has intruded into my fun time lately. If I truly felt pressured, I'd be bombarding you with all the March posts I've missed! 3y
MayJasper What does you have to do? @realifereading 3y
RealLifeReading @Mayjasper post a photo each day (E.g. April 1 is prompt number 1). And you can interpret the prompt any way you like. Also use the hashtag #aprilbookshowers and check out what everyone else is up to. And tag me so I can come by and say hi 3y
