The Enchanted April
The Enchanted April | Elizabeth Von Arnim
Elizabeth von Arnim's novel tells the story of four dissimilar women in 1920s England who leave their damp and rainy environs to go on a holiday to a secluded coastal castle in Italy. Mrs. Arbuthnot and Mrs. Wilkins, who belong to the same ladies' club but have never spoken, become acquainted after reading an advertisement for villas for rent in a newspaper. They find some common ground in that both are struggling to make the best of unhappy marriages. Having decided to seek other ladies to help share expenses, they reluctantly take on the waspish, elderly Mrs. Fisher and the stunning, but aloof, Lady Caroline Dester. The four women come together at the castle and find rejuvenation in the tranquil beauty of their surroundings, rediscovering hope and love.

Hilarious story. I really enjoyed the interaction of these four women while they stay in an Italian castle for a month. Different personalities and backgrounds, different motives to stay at the castle. I liked the sarcasm tone of those dialogues, absurd situations. Even the author‘s life was peculiar. This edition has an introduction part. Better to read it after the novel. 3.5/3.8⭐️ #BookSpinBingo May 2022 #DoubleSpin @TheAromaOfBooks

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! I frequently feel like introductions should be afterwords and vice versa. I read a nonfiction book lately and then the afterword was the author explaining how she was actually connected to the real-life people in the book... like that would have been extremely helpful/interesting at the beginning?? And then sometimes I read an introduction that literally tells the whole story of the book! Why?? 4w

Finished this last weekend with the #sundaybuddyread crew - it was so enjoyable! Definitely not what I expected but the descriptions of Italy in the spring were gorgeous and the characters were hilarious. I loved reading and discussing along with everyone @TheBookHippie ☺️

Enjoyable listen! I recommend the audio, great narration. Her writing style is eloquent and humorous. I listened to this while doing housework and it made the time fly. This is a photo of the actual castle inspired by this book, which she also wrote there. Perfect book for my first fiction read in 3 years! 🙌🏻

mdm139 This is the second time in one day someone has recommended this book to me. I will have to check it out. 2mo

My April #BookStats & recap. I‘m satisfied with 10 books finished in April considering what a busy month it was. Finished up North & South & Oceanography of the Moon & the others I started & finished. I really enjoyed everything I read with the exception of slogging through North and South at times. An American Sunrise, I read for a book discussion & then listened to it on audiobook & took part in Big Read Hawaii & completed the National Poetry ⬇️

DebinHawaii …Month Challenge through my library as well as joined in on 2 buddy reads & completed 2 book tour reviews. I also knocked out a couple of #ARC from my NetGalley #TBR All in all, a great reading month! 🎉📚🎉 2mo

💐 I‘m in SE Texas, so spring lasts about 15 minutes before we barrel at 90 mph into full-blown summer! I didn‘t choose the number 90 lightly—our temps are already up there. Then it will be 95 every single day until the end of October, so I stay inside in my AC. 🥵

I had my doubts about this classic (published in 1922) going in to #SundayBuddyRead but it turned out to be a lovely surprise that although 100 years old & about 4 women in 1920‘s England, still has relevance today. Charming, humorous & with scenery descriptions stirring enough to make me want to drop everything & head to Italy, it was an enjoyable & perfect for April. I watched the 1991 move last night after finishing & really enjoyed it too. ⬇️

DebinHawaii …Thanks to Christine @TheBookHippie for the always great hosting & discussion & for getting me to read things I might not otherwise on my own! 🤗 2mo

Well. We did it! An old classic novel! I have to say it was better than I anticipated- the descriptions of their surroundings was the best part for me. I did find the relationships interesting and it was fun to see what happened to them all, 100 years ago. Just wow.

Thank you for traveling with me in April to the enchanted April! I had fun! And I still don‘t like Melleresh 🤣 and I want to know the food bill!
Final thoughts?

AmyG Ha! The food bill. I enjoyed this, too. It read quickly for me. I just wanted to go there for a month with a suitcase full of books and read in all the little gardens. 2mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG me tooooo!!! 2mo
Karisa @AmyG Yes! 📚🌸🎉🍷 2mo

Karisa I still don‘t like Mellersh either. So pompous. A whole month in such a place would be amazing! I enjoyed this one too and kind of want to look back at the flowers mentioned for their symbolism (I saw acacia at the end means immortal soul). Hope your people are feeling better soon, @TheBookHippie 💗 2mo
AmyG I don‘t really like either of the husbands. @TheBookHippie @Karisa 2mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa I thought of a reread to catch all the symbolism I likely missed. I‘m still healthy! 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻 the rest 😩🤧🤧😝 2mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG No, me either. 😝 2mo
vlwelser The descriptions of the setting really sold this one for me. 2mo
DebinHawaii I enjoyed this a lot except for the endings for some. I do wonder about that food bill. Maybe Lady C can get Briggs to pay for it?! 🤣 It was a great pick that I don‘t think I ever would have picked up on my own so thank you @TheBookHippie for the pick & always great hosting! 🤗 (edited) 2mo
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii ♥️♥️♥️ I‘m with you the movie ending seemed better. 2mo
Karisa @AmyG Agreed. The husbands and Briggs are all awful! 2mo
peanutnine I enjoyed this so much! It read so easily, I fell into the story. I wished the ending took us back to dreary England to see how/if the changes stuck 2mo

Think they all stayed friends? Returned to the house? Who was really healed or changed or found their joy?

Is this book a romance ?
Can you see this as a play or a comedy?

AmyG I thought, towards the end, that they will all go back to their old lives....and wondered if the change they experienced will last. Who knows? None of them are very good at communication. 2mo
Karisa I can see this as a play. There‘s the first big scene change, but after that it is mostly house/garden. It‘d make a great play! Like @AmyG I wonder if their transformation will last too. Somehow, I see the Arbuthnots staying changed since her change was mostly about accepting her husband‘s job. Gosh, now I‘m remembering that he followed Caroline there—ew! (edited) 2mo
vlwelser Maybe it is a comedy. I'm tempted to watch the movie. 2mo
See All 6 Comments
DebinHawaii It‘s hard to know if they can sustain all pelt some of the changes. I hope the women will remain friends & at least some of the changes take hold back in their daily lives. I‘d like to think that Lotty‘s visions of them stay true, but those men—all of them, who knows?! I did enjoy the movie last night after I finished reading @vlwelser 2mo
peanutnine I definitely think that Lotty will stay friends with everyone 2mo

Is the setting and the house the main character you think? The necessity of beauty in everyday life and love, do we forget that sometimes?

Beauty made you love and love made you beautiful … is this the story summed up?

AmyG The flowers! The beautiful descriptions. It seemed as if they breathed love and beauty into the lives of these people. Yes, I felt the power of the house, the location. 2mo
Karisa Yes, San Salvatore seemed key. Would it have even been the same in a different season? Enjoy the beauty in the moment, I guess. How many don‘t have a chance for such escape or could they have had it by appreciating their real lives more too? 2mo
vlwelser @AmyG 💯 2mo
DebinHawaii Maybe not the main character, but one of them or a least strong supporting character. I think it did a lot for their psyches but could just getting away anywhere have done it? Maybe but not as fast or as well. It was so totally opposite from their daily lives & environment in England—so open, colorful & alive as opposed to being colorless, closed up & dreary, it showed them what the possibilities were. 2mo

Lotty. She who changes first and seems at peace but is it what needs to be so she can live with Mellerish?
Is her inner joy what was fixed?

AmyG I‘d be curious if any of them were “fixed”. They are going back to England. I wonder how they do when back home. 2mo
Karisa @AmyG Exactly! Once back in the rainy real-world, what happens to them? Do they all just need to move to Italy? 😂 2mo
vlwelser It seems like there was nothing wrong with this character anyway. Except maybe her husband not appreciating her. 2mo
DebinHawaii If anyone can sustain on the “outside” of the villa & Italy, it will be Lotty. I felt like she is able to more readily express her visions & tell her truths. Not confident her husband will continue to appreciate her—sadly maybe if her friendships with Lady C & Mrs.Fisher sustain. And again with his “endearing” ear pinching…what is that?! 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2mo
peanutnine I was doubtful going in, but I think she can sustain a happy relationship with Mellersh now that she is confident in herself. It seems like he didn't respect her before but now sees that she is capable and can appreciate her more when she doesn't back down 2mo

Scrap/Lady Caroline had come to get away from love. Think she ends up with Briggs?

Isn‘t love what she has in her deep new friendship with Lotty?

AmyG I think she loves tnat Lotty tells it like it is and doesn‘t know her as Lady C. The book alluded to her giving Mr Briggs a chance. 2mo
Karisa I think Caroline fell in love with the place. Since Briggs owns San Salvatore, he‘s given a chance (even though he was the ultimate “grabber”). I wonder with that type of guy if he‘d drop her for the next pretty woman that wanders in his path though? He‘s so flighty. 2mo
vlwelser I'm going to play this one out in my head as if she tells him off and goes on to do whatever the heck she wants. 2mo

DebinHawaii My hope for Caroline‘s love is as you said, her friendship with Lotty & I hope that sustains in the outside. Briggs in the other hand is a hard NO for me in the book. Movie Briggs made more sense. 2mo

Lady Caroline and Ferdinand Arundel
Which is ROSE HUSBAND?!
Who can‘t stop kissing his wife?
And is now in a pickle !!
Rose
Frederick
What do you think? Are they healed? Are they truly in love? More so than Lotty and Mellerish? Did she escape into her religion and he just let her and became his alter ego and now that‘ll end?
Rose - think she will go back to the church ?

AmyG I can only say...you have to communicate. They didn‘t as a couple. They each thought things about thhe other that were not true. Taking them out of England, I guess, let them see each other differently. 2mo
vlwelser This also seemed a little icky to me. And I felt bad for Mrs. A. But I guess if he can get his head out of his rear and they actually talk to each other it might work out. 2mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser I hope so! The rest I don‘t care about but this poor woman I hope he can be what she deserves. 2mo
DebinHawaii I hope that he can sustain it but it feels a bit unlikely. I agree @vlwelser that it has an “ick” to it. I hope that she can continue to let loose a little & not be so pious & enjoy life more when she goes back. 2mo

Mrs Fisher can be nice. Who knew?!
How very shocking.
We didn‘t gain too much knowledge of her, and she did seem to soften a bit, do you think she changed the least or that was all she could manage?

AmyG She seemed to change when she got some attention, when she felt appreciated. Reminds me of what my Mom always said...”you attract more bees with honey”. 2mo
Karisa It‘s like she was battling the place and Mrs. Wilkins and finally gave in. It was good to see Mrs. Fisher happy. 2mo

Telegram-for Rose from MR BRIGGS
WHO “fancies” ROSE?!
Well then.
Then he sees his ideal of absolute loveliness Lady Caroline…
And the struggle of Caroline seeing him as a grabber? For her outward beauty he is drawn. Which seems opposite of the whole story the inward making the outward beautiful. Why do you think that is?

AmyG Men are men...no matter where they are. But I got the sense, at the end, that just maybe Lady C might give him a chance? 2mo
Karisa That twist was a bit disheartening to me. It did feel so different than the rest of the message. The men are all disappointing in the book 😂 I watched the movie after finishing the book last week too. It was interesting how they solved the Briggs inconsistency 2mo
Karisa @AmyG It did seem like Caroline was giving in to Briggs. I couldn‘t tell if it was that she was so in love with the place, she‘d give him a chance. The book left it vague and I kind of liked that 2mo
See All 11 Comments
AmyG @Karisa I like the uncertainty, too. It did seem like there was the possibility of her giving him a chance....which for her, is a big change. 2mo
vlwelser I was rather disappointed by this character. I mean obviously Mrs. A is already taken and that would have been complicated but still... 2mo
DebinHawaii This bummed me out a bit in the book ending —I felt like Lady Caroline maybe giving him a chance was slapped on for the ending unless he snapped out of the “grasping.” @Karisa I watched the movie last night after finishing & how they dealt with Briggs felt better to me than the book. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2mo
Karisa @DebinHawaii I agree. I thought the movie ending for Briggs/Caroline was clever and helped her with her problem well. It kinda fit his character too. I imagined him much older in the book for some reason. I wonder how they‘d remake it today? 2mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa I‘d love to see a remake! 2mo
Karisa @TheBookHippie They need to consult us on casting. 😂 I read this article but am not 100% sure on her picks: https://teaandinksociety.com/enchanted-april-movie-remake/ 2mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa I read that too I feel we can do better!!! 2mo
peanutnine I was also disappointed in Briggs' character. Like, I get that he thought Lady C was beautiful but I wished he could have acted normal and got to know her for her personality. Then her maybe giving him a chance would have felt more satisfying I think 2mo

To be as happy as all that on so little …

Lotty effortlessly simply happy

Always being there was the essential secret for a wife…
Um.
WHAT?!

THE BATH!
They were aquatinted with Mr Wilkinson legs 🤣

The bill!!! We knew it‘d be BIG! Mr. Wilkins solves the housekeeping problem…
Thoughts?

Lady Caroline‘s handling of Mr Wilkinson..

So many little events that caused much thought!

Thoughts on any of this?

Karisa I was a little irritated that they needed him to solve that. It was like “duh” come on ladies. 😂 All that stuff with the bath was too funny! They must‘ve left that in the movie. Too great of visuals not too with the servants so attentive and the bath exploding 😂 Strange that the proper Mrs. Fisher was so ok with him after that intro. I think his handsomeness worked to his advantage there. 2mo

vlwelser The bath was pretty slapstick. 2mo
vlwelser Also the housekeeping bill. What stood out to me is that Mrs F thinks about inviting her fake friend to come sort things out because she can't be bothered. 2mo
DebinHawaii The bath scene was hilarious in the book. I don‘t remember that much about the movie but saw it decades ago so I am really looking forward to watching it now. 2mo
DebinHawaii The housekeeping bill & him needing to sort it was annoying. I feel sorry for the cook, she has so many family & friends thinking this is going to be a big windfall. 🫣 2mo
mollyrotondo The bath scene was very funny! Lol especially since Caroline was trying so hard to avoid any unseemly interaction with him. And then she bumps into him in a towel 🫣 😆 but Mrs Fisher is too much with her whole wife being subservient to her husband nonsense. 2mo
peanutnine @Karisa I was so surprised that Mrs F liked him more after that crazy first impression! I expected the opposite reaction to be sure 2mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick The bath scene was a welcome diversion from all the sitting and thinking. Those must've been some impressive legs for even Mrs Fisher to be charmed by that introduction. It was annoying that they all assumed someone else was managing the food and the bill and I especially felt bad for the cook. 2mo

Oy.
Protecting Lady Caroline‘s nap
Kissing his wife for no reason
He kissed her not good morning or night but kissed her!!
Sees his wife differently.. as an asset?!
The nicer he gets the nicer his wife gets.
He was nice in private not just public!?
Thoughts on our Mr Wilkinson?
His main game plan for the three women?
Does he love his wife? Or ?

Karisa He seems changed by the place too but doesn‘t quite feel real. I keep waiting for him to drop the veneer but maybe it‘s real? How is he still maneuvering for business even while there? Glad he‘s treating his wife well and she‘s happy. I‘m still having a tough time trusting him 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa I don‘t trust him. 😅 2mo
AmyG I know many men-all business, all the time. Mr W seems very self absorbed. And now his wife can actually be an asset…to HIM. And Mrs W seems to love all the attention from him. Trust him? I donmt either but who knows? 2mo
See All 12 Comments
Kdgordon88 He is there for a business opportunity and his actions are all toward whatever gain that might give him. Lotta thinks the magic is working a miracle. I don‘t want her to be disappointed. 2mo
vlwelser I don't trust this dude either. There's something slimy about the fact that he has this ulterior motive and is only seeing the women as potential clients. I think it's fun that he basically ignores Mrs A because he doesn't know who her husband is. 2mo
DebinHawaii Yep, not to be trusted. And what is with all the “ear pinching”—is that supposed to be romantic & endearing?!? 🙄🫤 2mo
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii RIGHT??? What is THAT? Poor ears....... 2mo
Karisa @DebinHawaii 🤣🤣🤣🙉 2mo
mollyrotondo Agree with everyone! He‘s there for business. He‘s not there because he‘s falling back in love with his wife. He sees his wife as valuable to his business not valuable as a human being. He‘s slimy in his own way. I just hope someone sees it because so far all the women are falling for his charms. 2mo
peanutnine @DebinHawaii I thought the same thing! Weird... She was so pleased too 😅 2mo
peanutnine He definitely gives me bad vibes still. I'm glad they're getting along but can't see it lasting past their vacation, especially if it gets out that she didn't invite him bc of Lady C. Hopefully she will keep her confidence though and not shrink again 2mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Mellersh is a self-serving douchebag. He is only now appreciating his wife now that she has brought some potential business into his life. The way he's schmoozing them is funny, but also sad. I don't think any part of this trip is to enjoy his wife and her company alone, without pretense. 2mo

Mrs Fisher restless..
Using Kate as a type of maneuver !
Game playing?
She doesn‘t seem to want her there is she her only option to ask?

Rose Mrs Arbuthnot - not praying or wanting too -
Because she is at peace in this place ?
I had many thoughts but what do you make of it?

Her desire for tangible love and be loved…
Not quite daring to ask her husband to come…
Think her husband is just following her lead in things?

Karisa I feel bad for Mrs. A. I think she should invite her husband because she really does miss him. She seems a little lost without her self given duties. Maybe she feels further from God somehow while there or religion feels less real to her there? I would have pegged her for the type to be exploring churches in the nearby town. Mrs. Fisher seems lonely too but too stubborn to admit it. Kind of surprised that all of them aren‘t exploring further. 2mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa I think not if she‘s is using religion as a crutch or a hiding place or out of guilt, or to be in control, then with it removed she may be at peace… maybe she‘ll find her true spirit and be happier. I suspect her husband may truly love her but is it at loss. Will see I HOPE!!! So many things to explore in this little book! 2mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa As for Mrs Fisher 🤦🏻‍♀️ Oy. 2mo
See All 16 Comments
Karisa @TheBookHippie I agree. I just finished Brookner‘s Hotel du Lac which is also at a hotel with mostly women who are strangers. It also explores women‘s roles but from the 1980s (not a ton different really). It was good but felt so detached. I‘m enjoying Enchanted April‘s warmth more. 2mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa It‘s very personal and warm is a good word. The more I read the more I love! 2mo
AmyG Mrs F is just manipulative. Mrs A…she fascinates me. She hid her thoughts and unhappiness for so long that now that she‘s alone, she has nothing to do but face it all. (edited) 2mo
vlwelser It does seem like Mrs A is afraid to put herself out there and take this chance, worried that he might reject her. 2mo
DebinHawaii @AmyG Perfectly said! I agree about both Mrs. F. & Mrs. A. I want to know more about Mrs. A & hope she gets so happiness. 2mo
DebinHawaii @TheBookHippie @Karisa I agree—warmth is a great word for it. It is comforting & very “readable.” 💜 2mo
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii I thought the same thing it is a definite comfort read! Very soothing! 2mo
Karisa @AmyG Good point! Mrs. A was hiding behind busyness and once there no excuses but left to think in peace 2mo
mollyrotondo I think Mrs A is afraid to be rejected by her husband since she has viewed his reactions to her lately as distant and unfeeling. And Mrs Fisher also seems to be afraid of rejection to by someone like Kate in her social circle. She seems to always feel the need to put on airs and wouldn‘t be able to completely be herself and think if Kate was there. They both seem to want to impress and are afraid that even this won‘t help them with loneliness 2mo
peanutnine @TheBookHippie I agree that I think Mrs A was using religion to hide her unhappiness in her marriage. Maybe something she turned to when she lost her child since she didn't seem to find comfort in her husband. I hope they just need to communicate and will sort out their feelings. She deserves happiness! 2mo
TheBookHippie @peanutnine I am so hoping for happiness for her! 2mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Rose seems like a pleasant women looking for a family to love. Since she lost a child, all she has is Mr A. I wish she'd invite him, even if it's just to know where she stands with him. I'm still referring to Mrs F as Ol' Stick Up the Ass. She is just so tightly wound. 2mo
TheBookHippie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick she‘s something ! @AmyG says it‘s her mother in law. 🤣 way too kind to be mine 2mo

Caroline and Lotty
Lady Caroline & Mrs Wilkinson
Friends
What do you think of the addressing each other by first names as gradually the women get to know one another?

Karisa The whole Mrs and Lady thing feels so old to me. It only makes sense now for teachers and to address older people. There‘s a detachment to using the titles, almost like saying they belong to the family before being on individual. Since it was the way they were introduced to us, I have a hard time remembering their first names. 2mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa I had to fight to be called Miss Christine at school- however these are kids that need my first name and I am not a Mrs. as I use my maiden name 😅🤣 ♥️ I agree with the belonging … an unusually large group of women here still go buy Mrs and then their husbands first and last name… 2mo
Karisa @TheBookHippie Yeah, as a teacher of 20+ years it‘s always been there (pretty much all going by Mr. or Mrs. and last name). I‘ve tried at least going by Ms. to make the married thing not the focus. Sometimes I wish I‘d kept my maiden name since it‘s easier to spell/say. Teachers get married or divorced and need to change emails even because last names are used there at work. Names are so tricky. 2mo
See All 18 Comments
TheBookHippie @Karisa I know about the divorced thing I‘m like oh former Mrs _____ is now Mrs_____. Notice men never have to do this…. I just hit 30 years what the world ?! I only have two teachers next year to be with as they keep retiring on me. ( usually I have 5) I haven‘t picked up new classrooms despite being asked but I have 3 years left so…. I may pick up a first year teacher as the principal has asked me too. ♥️😅 2mo
Karisa @TheBookHippie Yes! The male teachers don‘t need to worry about it. I keep thinking the young, female teachers won‘t change their names but just about all do. It‘s odd because your name is your identity in teaching. You‘ve built up a reputation around it. Why change it especially in today‘s time? 2mo
Karisa @TheBookHippie Five is a lot of kiddos! You‘ve touched so many lives! 💗 2mo
AmyG The story takes place 100 or so years ago where people were called by their titles. Like @Karisa I forget the first names as we were introduced to them by Mrs A and W. It would seem as they get comfortable with each other they would use first names. I will never feel comfortable being called Mrs G. Makes me feel old. 😂 (edited) 2mo
vlwelser I do think she's making a point here that their identities are tied up in their husbands or families but as it goes along they seem to come into their own. But maybe I'm overthinking it. 2mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser I think that‘s it. I‘m imaging it‘s based on her life. (The author) 2mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa generally I have 100-112 split over 40 hours reading one on one ♥️ it‘s why I‘m out of stickers often 🤣 2mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG 🙃😝 it sounds soooo old. 2mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa The name thing yes. So many generations know me by name. I read with a lot of children and even a few grandchildren of my original readers! They know as soon as they get me “my mama had you she says you‘re the best and I have to behave myself” 🥺 also “Miss Christine you been a kid a long time now if you were a kid when mom read with you…” 2mo
DebinHawaii It reminds me of Jane Austen & not being able to use names until well into female friendship or a courtship.😆I am a corporate trainer & part of our business is warehouse, so lots of young local males (18-mud 20s & up) so even though I introduce myself as Deb, I get called Miss Deb, Ma‘am & Auntie most of the time. Even though I find it a little annoying, they are trying to be respectful & polite! 😳 2mo
Karisa @TheBookHippie I love it! A legacy of reading 😍 I have a few students this year that I taught their parents years ago too. It‘s actually really cool! 2mo
mollyrotondo @Karisa @AmyG I also can‘t remember their first names since they were first introduced as Mrs W and A. I see that the book is gradually transitioning to their first names so it‘s becoming a little easier now. But Mrs Fisher is always Mrs Fisher. No one is getting closer to her yet and she‘s not letting any of them in yet. I think it‘s a nice sign of female friendship in this book. The more familiar first name address. 2mo
peanutnine It's also so weird how Mr W is annoyed that they all don't call him Mr Mellersh W - why is his first name so important to him? 2mo
TheBookHippie @peanutnine he‘s so odd! 2mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Maybe I'm not reading between the lines, but they all still seem like nothing more than women living in close proximity. As for the titles, that is one outdated practice I'm glad to be past for the most part. My last name is a bear and I certainly don't need people stumbling over themselves to call me Ms Schnorrbusch. My dad is the youngest of 15 kids...there are tons Schnorrbusch women! There'd be less distinction between us all. 2mo

The servants thinking the ladies had very little life in them!
The ladies being alone
No men..

Macaroons
That tea scene …
Wow.
Reactions??

And did you catch “Reading was very important the proper exercise and development of one‘s mind was a paramount duty.”

The descriptive nature of the flowers and trees changing brings out the wanderlust in me.

I‘m finding little gems and the more I read the more I like. You????

Karisa I love macarons! The tea scene felt like they were each on their own even while sitting together. Mrs. Fisher does place a high value on reading but doesn‘t seem to do much inner reflection or empathizing with characters. I wonder if she only reads those authors she keeps mentioning meeting? Caroline seemed to meet many authors growing up too but be unimpressed. The book does make me want to visit somewhere like it. Just beautiful! 2mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa seriously want to go stay about 6 months ! 2mo
AmyG Ugh, Mrs F. She drops names to make herself look important. With one section left I don‘t think she will come around. I‘d love to go there alone too. 6 months sounds about oerfect! 2mo
See All 9 Comments
vlwelser I love the descriptions especially the flowers. And it's April here but no flowers yet. So I may be slightly jealous. 2mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser It‘s supposed to snow here tomorrow 🤦🏻‍♀️ 2mo
vlwelser Yuck. I'm hoping we're done. It did snow a couple of weeks ago but only super early in the morning. 2mo
DebinHawaii I am annoyed with Mrs. Fisher—she‘s go the lively place indoor & her “battlements” & lots of free time to read & is squandering it. I would give a lot for that privilege. But I guess if reading is only a duty/chore to improve your mind, it makes sense she isn‘t enjoying the space & time do it. 🧐 2mo
mollyrotondo Love the macaroons! It is slightly disappointing that all the women seem lonely until a man comes around 😏 Mrs Fisher is restless I think because she is finally given the opportunity to reflect which she doesn‘t seem to have ever been given or at least been given in a long time. But loving the descriptions of the flowers. My new plant obsession has been poked at more with this book 😂 2mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I am totally with the servants on this one. The villa sounds lovely but these ladies are boring me. We haven't even gotten to follow Lotty around on her jaunts and she might've actually ventured into town. I could go for some macarons and a lawn chair to read in the sun, though! 2mo

Lady Caroline worried about Mr W..
How wives didn‘t understand she didn‘t want their man.
Think this is still true about attractive unmarried women who are around “husbands” or partners? The wives distrust and dislike them on basis of the “husbands” reaction to them? How is this the woman‘s fault?
She‘s quite interesting for 1922. Thoughts?

Karisa I think we still do place a very high value on physical beauty. Just look at the cosmetics/hair industry. Caroline does illustrate the pluses and minuses of beauty. She is so hyper-focused on her own beauty too. It seems like the book views Mr. Wilkins‘ attractiveness as only an advantage to him. It didn‘t seem like Mrs. Wilkins was concerned or jealous at all about Caroline. Maybe it‘s the place‘s magic working on her? 2mo
AmyG I am sure men, married and not, hit on beautiful women all the time. They feel entitled. I am sure C is sick of it yet has learned that her beauty brings much attention (which she likes). Mrs W just isn‘t threatened by C (edited) 2mo
vlwelser It's easier not to be jealous when you're confident yourself and that seems to be happening for Mrs W. Or maybe she had this all along. 2mo
See All 9 Comments
DebinHawaii Being a perpetually single person, I had a friend (notice past tense) whose husband & I got along really well—similar sense of humor, interested in the same things, great conversations. I am no Caroline 😉 & I never once saw him or was in contact with him without her being there & nothing ever seemed untoward to me or anyone else in our group of friends but she got it in her head that I was flirting with him & it ruined the friendship on both ⬇️ (edited) 2mo
DebinHawaii …sides-hers because what was she convinced I was trying to do & on mine because I was annoyed & hurt with her for believing that after so many years of friendship. I really think it was a self-confidence issue for her. @vlwelser I hope Lottie remains confident & doesn‘t let it hurt or negatively impact her & the budding friendship. (edited) 2mo
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii I‘ve been there! 😝 ugh. Insecurity I imagine .. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 2mo
mollyrotondo I love how real this concern is for Caroline. She knows how men react to her which is the man‘s problem not hers. But the wives blame her. Which is awful because it‘s the man‘s fault for straying. But we see that Mr W really only thinks about business and peoples‘ value. I don‘t like him but at least he‘s not a cad. And Mrs W does seem to have rediscovered her confidence in this place. The setting is starting to become more magical to me btw lol 2mo
peanutnine @mollyrotondo "I don't like him but at least he's not a cad" ? My sentiments exactly. He only wants to take advantage of the ladies for their business, not their attractiveness. I feel for Caroline, she must not have many real friends because her beauty is constantly alienating her. Probably why she has bonded with Mrs W, since she takes no notice and it doesn't come between them 2mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Some people are just super jealous and I think it reflects more on their self-worth than on the pretty/handsome one. This is clearly not just a 1922 problem. @mollyrotondo I, too, agree with your sentiment about Mr W. It's actually a bit laughable how much he's networking with these women for their business. 2mo

Their minds are very active
Mrs Wilkinson reacted first to the surroundings
Mrs Arbuthnot is stirred differently
Lady Caroline reacts almost instantly as well
“Tawdry Fancy” my new phrase!
Even Mrs Fisher was affected a bit…
In the quiet the mind begins..

Were they not truly afforded the chance or luxury to think in their ordinary lives or were they all in a type of survival mode? Or is it just normal not to think deeply?

Cosmos_Moon Beautiful bougainvillea! 2mo
TheBookHippie @Cosmos_Moon I just love them!!! Makes one happy! 2mo
Cosmos_Moon @TheBookHippie they are beautiful! I have a purple and “strawberries and cream” still waiting for the flowers this year. 2mo
See All 13 Comments
TheBookHippie @Cosmos_Moon snow forecasted tomorrow here… it‘ll be awhile until I see flowers of any kind! 2mo
Karisa They did all seem to be in a sort of holding pattern at the beginning of this section. Each stuck separately in their own heads. It‘s interesting how much Mrs. Wilkins has changed and embraced the place. I‘m wondering if she‘ll be stay changed once she returns home 2mo
Karisa Tawdry Scrap😂 2mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa I wonder that too. As personally I know and have been told I‘m a different, better person totally at peace, when I am not in my hometown. Which is true. Generally I‘m away from it often, thank god. However during the pandemic, when I wasn‘t in Chicago once a month and by the California ocean in the spring -it came to be a huge issue. 😝 2mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa Tawdry Scrap is a good band name! 2mo
AmyG I find when I amaway, I leave all the issues I have when I am home…at home. Mrs W did that. But some just pack their stuff with them…Mrs F, C. Mrs A seems to be sort of inbetween. As for Mrs F…she is just “old school” rigid. No thinking for her which is funny because she knew some of the worlds greatest thinkers. 2mo
vlwelser I'm looking forward to seeing where they all settle. 2mo
DebinHawaii Tawdry Scrap! 🤣🤣🤣 @Karisa @TheBookHippie I have trouble completely relaxing & leaving my issues behind, even on vacation but it helps. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I hope they can maintain their changes when they get home. 2mo
mollyrotondo @AmyG I am exactly like this too. I leave all my worries behind when I‘m on vacation. I feel like at this point in time for these women this is the first chance they have to feel free to think. Mrs F doesn‘t believe women should think and yet here she is finally thinking. Mrs A doesn‘t want to think but is allowing this time to contemplate better her marriage. Caroline is able to think without others in her ear. 2mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I think all four women were stuck in an unfulfilling routine back home and the leisure of being able to just sit is having some positive effects on them. I know that even when I'm traveling for work, thought not totally stress free, I feel a little freer from not having to do laundry, cook, and clean up every single day. 2mo

This was an April #buddyread and I LOVED IT! Talk about the ultimate girls trip novel! The writing was amazing (I‘d never read her before) the descriptions of Italy now make me want to plan a trip. And I loved how the four ladies (who didn‘t know each other before the trip) relationships changed over the course of their holiday. #readingchallenge2022

I had such a long & busy work week that I spent much of the weekend sleeping. I didn‘t even tackle my #SundayBuddyRead reading until this morning but I made the most of my reading & answering the discussion questions by ordering brunch in. My favorite Mexican Street 🥑 toast & a side of fried rice. (It isn‘t Italian food but it was still very ono!)😋

I‘m so enjoying this read. 🤍🌺🌸💐

Did I miss anything? I can‘t wait to read more and I‘m definitely watching the movie after. This book makes me miss my grandma, so much, it was her birthday yesterday. She lived until I was 44 she was 98 so I can‘t complain but this book - she‘d be so fun to talk to about it. Happy Sunday!

Up next Chapters 13-16 🌺

Husbands and beds in the same sentence

Husband talk at the table… scandalous!

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Kate AKA Ol' Stick Up the Ass Two: Electric Boogalaoo. I don't really want to get to know Mellersh, but I also like to poke bears, so I'd love for some testosterone to be thrown into the mix of these ladies. Funny that it's improper to even refer to sharing a bed with your husband back then. The way Lotty said he's “a husband“ and Mrs F is reacting like Lotty is a polygamist or something is hilarious. 3mo
mollyrotondo I don‘t think he‘s going to come. Mrs W is way too excited about it and she‘s bound to be disappointed. Mrs F going on about how the husband is more flesh than your own parents uhh. Francesca
I‘d say her job is cut out for her Oy..
I love the food talk..

Freesia…I love Freesia

Fly by Nights … I found this https://wordhistories.net/2016/09/11/fly-by-night/

Anything stuck out to you ?

Sargar114 All I kept thinking was how terrible Lady Caroline was to her when all she was doing was finding out what to feed them. 3mo
AmyG @Sargar114 Caroline seems to be a bit of a spoiled “scrap”. And Mrs F….in yiddish there is this word….fabbiseneh….means miserable human being. That‘s Mrs F. 3mo
Karisa @AmyG 😂😂😂 3mo
See All 19 Comments
Karisa @Sargar114 Right?! It‘s like they all wanted to be the boss in assigning rooms, but no one will just help Francesca to know what to make them for dinner. I‘d love to have someone offer to make me my meals… I keep thinking just give her a budget and what their dietary restrictions and let Francesca go for it. I love how she‘s thinking how to best help the members of her community with her job too 3mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG I SO AGREE. 3mo
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 I felt so bad for her! 3mo
DebinHawaii Yes, I hope Francesca gets her own & makes some profit for herself & her family/friends out of this. I laughed when Mrs. Fisher & Mrs. A kept trying to “out hostess” each other. “Would you like some more coffee?” Would you like coffee?” 😆 3mo
bnp Go Francesca! I just hope when the bill for food comes due is not to high for R & L to pay. 3mo
TheBookHippie @bnp I wonder if whoever has more money will just pay it. It‘s so interesting the way the story is being told. 3mo
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii This makes me laugh it‘s me at every family gathering although they all look forward to it 🤣🤦🏻‍♀️ 3mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I would LOVE to have someone cooking for me and cleaning up afterwards. I am not a fan of either. Granted, without the internet, I don't know how much I'd know about Italian food, but jeez...give Francesca a little direction. I hope the food bill is high and they learn a lesson. I was laughing when they kept trying to out-hostess each other. Can we just get a companion novel about the lives of the delightful staff? 3mo
peanutnine @Karisa I 100% agree! The community seems very close-knit. All those cousins and niblings to help out 3mo
Karisa @peanutnine @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Exactly! The more I see peeks of the staff, the more I want to hear their stories! 3mo
mollyrotondo @DebinHawaii this was a riot! And Mrs W is like let it go, Mrs A! But Mrs A was not having Mrs F take over 😂 so funny! 2mo
mollyrotondo I love how Francesca finally says near the end of this section that she‘s just going to buy whatever she feels like and not worry about how much it‘s going to cost. Good for her! 😂 2mo
mollyrotondo Also of course women would be compared to witches 🤦🏻‍♀️ 2mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo Witches that we all are! ♥️ 2mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo I‘d love to shop for good with no budget!!! What a dream! 2mo
mollyrotondo @TheBookHippie oh my gosh me too! Not worry about the price tag. My dream! Lol 2mo

I love that they‘re in Heaven
It‘s also fun to see this part is more colorful
They appear more youthful
The vicar seems older
Are they changing?
Did they need this to see who they truly were?

vlwelser It's like they've come alive in the sunshine. 3mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser I understand that totally… 3mo
AmyG It has made them more alive. Yet Mrs F and C seems to be wrapped up in themselves. Hopefully they can see the beauty of where they are before they leave. 3mo
See All 12 Comments
Karisa It is having an amazing effect on Lottie and Rose but not yet sinking in on the other two. I wonder why the owner chooses not to live there? Do the people who work there live there year-round? If so, wouldn‘t you hate the guests a little if they didn‘t appreciate the place or would you even see its beauty if always around it (plus it being a job)? How can anyone afford to maintain such a place? 3mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa I had all those questions too. Do they have to rent out to keep it? 3mo
Kdgordon88 Lottie and Rose went with a certain expectation and openness to the experience. I haven‘t figured out what Mrs. Fisher hoped to gain or maybe I missed it. 3mo
TheBookHippie @Kdgordon88 I‘m thinking just a change of scenery … 3mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG I hope so! 3mo
DebinHawaii It‘s that sunny vacation bubble where you feel free & unencumbered & it shows. Hopefully Caroline & Mrs. Fisher will get in the bubble. 🌞💛🌼 3mo
bnp @Kdgordon88 I hadn't thought of that. I think she told Rose & Lotty she wanted to come & enjoy her memories, but couldn't she do that at home? Maybe Mrs. F (do we even know her first name?) thinks she came because it was a cheaper way of vacationing, but she also came because she's lonesome and knew there would be other people around. 3mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick No matter how heavenly home is, I suppose the owner maybe rents it out while travelling elsewhere. We haven't seen much interaction with the locals. I wonder if Italy in 1922 was less rigid and stifling than England in 1922. Perhaps it'll do them all some good to get away from the hustle of London, being proper ladies and all that jazz. A little distance can be good for a person. 3mo
mollyrotondo I definitely see it effecting Mrs W and Mrs A. But Fisher needs to let the sunshine in and smell the flowers! And Caroline needs to let go of her anger (even though I know that can be difficult). There‘s still time! 2mo

Lady Caroline
Desperate to be alone
Does not want a husband
Or to give orders
Oh no she‘s thinking! Gads. We don‘t do that til one is 40…
Magically alluring to all men
Everyone enamored and wanting her
The war killed the one man she felt safe with
Wants to be invisible
Her parents -her father and Mrs Fisher say because of her looks she is to be looked at and do what she wants!

Thoughts ?

vlwelser I relate to this character a lot. 3mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser HA. Meeee tooo. Leave me alone please and Thankyou ..🤦🏻‍♀️ 3mo
Sargar114 It sounds like she is still grieving that man. It baffled me how everyone was so enamored with her looks regardless of how awful she was to people. 3mo
See All 13 Comments
Sargar114 However, I can appreciate the desire for solitude. I really can only recharge when I‘m by myself. 3mo
Karisa @Sargar114 Yeah, grieving and not willing to let anyone else in. This character is so self-absorbed and hurting at the same time. I was having a hard time imagining that people were still looking at her as sweet even with her intentions. Curious to see how an actress in the movie might play that. 3mo
Karisa Oh and what‘s with the nickname “Scrap” 😂 3mo
AmyG Yes to all! I‘s love to be left alone. I feel she wants to be seen for who she is, not what she looks like. She doesn‘t want her beauty to be her identity and yet to others it is. I, too, think she is mourning her love. 3mo
DebinHawaii OK, it made me laugh when she was trying her best to be so rude to people so they‘d leave her alone but they couldn‘t see it as they are so blinded by her beauty! 😆 3mo
bnp Yes Amy, she wants someone to see her, not her beauty. I think her desire n to get away is healthy, and it seems like she has the guts and brains to see herself and figure out a different way to be. 3mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick So, I get that she wants to be left alone, as it sounds like people are constantly doting on her. (Sure, I guess having people fall all over themselves because of my looks might eventually get old 😂) However, I haven't seen a glimmer of any redeeming quality yet, one that might make one of these women take notice that she's brilliant or a superior listener or a dynamite cook. She's mourning, but it's been a few years by the sound of it. 3mo
peanutnine @DebinHawaii I laughed so much at that part too! 😂 @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I feel like she and Mrs W are starting to hit it off and maybe that relationship will bring out something of her character soon 3mo
mollyrotondo @AmyG she definitely wants to be seen for herself and not just her looks. I also think she‘s tired of everyone telling her what she‘s supposed to be. She doesn‘t want to be married like everyone tells her. She doesn‘t want to be the head of household giving orders. She wants to make her own decisions and at this time it was very difficult for a young woman to do that. She lost someone she felt safe with and is now stuck with vultures. 2mo

Mrs Fisher
Came to sit in the sun and remember
Doesn‘t smile
Stuck in the past
Stuck with haughtiness?
Beauty-all over before you can turn round
Mens weakness to it- EVEN MR FISHER!
Womens heads weren‘t made for thinking!
Name dropper…

Does anyone like her ? 😅

vlwelser I have hope that she'll get her head out of her behind. 3mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser SERIOUSLY! I worked with an old nurse like this. Oy. 3mo
Sargar114 She is pretty terrible. Manipulating things and expecting everything to be to her suiting 3mo
See All 12 Comments
Karisa @vlwelser 😂 @Sargar114 Exactly! She‘s exhausting! @TheBookHippie I bet you did not miss that nurse later! 3mo
AmyG I have known people like her. I don‘t like her at all. She seems very stuck up and probably insecure as she mentions past names all the time-I feel to make herself look important. Or perhaps for attention. All of these women seem lonely in theor own way. 3mo
Kdgordon88 I think she is lonely, too. She just manages it in an ugly way. 3mo
DebinHawaii I am hoping she gets better because she is the worst! 🧐 3mo
bnp Sounds like she had an unhappy marriage, so I'm not surprised she dwells in her childhood. I wonder if she ever had any friends? That were friends, not grateful hangers on like Kate Lumley. 3mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Goodness this woman is exhausting! She's a character I love to hate so far. She's so awful it's hilarious to me, likely because I don't actually have to deal with her. For all her haughtiness, though, she couldn't say much more than Really...?! to everything at dinner. I'm actually surprised she hasn't clutched her pearls yet, but the month is young. 3mo
TheBookHippie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick She is so ugly 😝 inside and out… jeepers. 3mo
mollyrotondo She‘s so terrible especially when she talks to Caroline. Tells her women shouldn‘t be thinking and that Caroline needs to get married. Uhh she reminds me of many women I‘ve dealt with at my office 🙄 but I love how the author gives you this little hint of her not so perfect marriage with Mr Fisher. We don‘t know details but he clearly wasn‘t the perfect husband. She might be dealing with her own marital pain that was never addressed before he died 2mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo I agree her pain is making her very prickly! 2mo

Mrs Arbuthnot
Wisteria and sunshine
Basking in the beauty
Longing for the days of old with her husband longing to share her experience now with him..

What do we think of her?

vlwelser I think she's horribly lonely. 3mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser I do too, poor thing… 3mo
Karisa Mrs. A. seemed the one more likely to invite her husband. She at least likes/liked him a lot at one point. He seems the type to like it there but ignore her there too. I agree with you, @vlwelser she‘s so lonely. Sad for her if Mellersh arrives and monopolizes her new friend‘s attention. It feels like the book is setting her up for a happy ending though 3mo
See All 9 Comments
AmyG @vlwelser I also think she is very lonely. Her charity work helped her, it masked her lonliness by keeping her busy and focused. I like her. She seems quite lovely. 3mo
DebinHawaii I hope she gets her happy ending @Karisa I feel most sorry for her. 3mo
bnp She seemed more stable than Lotty, but she's hidden how unhappy she is for so long that I think she's going to be sad when she realizes it. From my vague recollection of the movie, I think everyone leaves the castle happier - I hope so anyway. 3mo
TheBookHippie @bnp OH I HOPE SO! 3mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Rose needs someone to pay attention to her and show her some affection and Frederick doesn't seem up to the task. I hope she finds happiness, because she needs nice enough, even if she's deluded herself into thinking she's happy. I hope she's at least happIER in the villa than at home. 3mo
mollyrotondo I agree that Rose is lonely. She loves her husband but definitely knows that he doesn‘t love her in the same way, if at all. She‘s aware of the problem but still unsure of how it can be fixed. She needs more from a partner. 2mo

Mrs Wilkins
I love things taken out of my hands…
I can‘t see the point in being in authority at the price of one‘s liberty …
Sweet
Bliss
Happy
Invites her husband?!
It doesn‘t matter who loves as long as someone loves…
Thoughts on her?

vlwelser Currently holding my judgement. I think she's coming into her own though. 3mo
Sargar114 I liked her perspective on the place. However was annoyed that she invited her husband; but since it was because she was so happy she wanted to share that with him, I could appreciate that. 3mo
Karisa I was shocked at Mrs. Wilkins inviting Mellersh (so funny how she always uses his first name and such an odd name). She‘s a true believer in the place already. I can‘t wait to see what he does there if he even goes… 3mo
See All 12 Comments
AmyG Mrs W just seems SO happy there that everything in her life now looks beautiful. Even Mellersh. It will be interesting if he even comes. 3mo
Kdgordon88 I loved her attitude…just be and the rest will follow…but surprised by the invite to husband and after only a day. Seems selfish with out asking the others 3mo
DebinHawaii I like Lotty but In my head when she was saying she invited him, I was like “Oh no! Why on earth would you do that?!” Also, I would be unhappy if I were one of the others & Mellersh was sprung on me. 3mo
bnp I like Lotty the best so far, but I also was "Why are you inviting the person you needed to get away from?" 3mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I like her optimism and sunny outlook about being at the villa, but inviting Mellersh?! Especially since it's all ladies there and not consulting anyone about it? That's shady shit. Nothing about the other three makes me think they want men there at all. Hell, they don't seem to want ANYONE else there, present company included. I wonder if he'll even come. If he does, I almost hope Rose or Ol' Stick Up the Ass puts him in his place. 3mo
TheBookHippie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I agree with all you said!!! 3mo
peanutnine I definitely agree with everyone's comments, Lotty is certainly my favorite but I'm worried she's been impulsive with inviting Mellersh so soon. But I especially love how she is suddenly so perceptive of the other ladies, like knowing that Lady C just wants to be left alone and boldly stating that Mrs. F will invite them back into her sitting room. She seems to have found some new instinct to guide her 3mo
TheBookHippie @peanutnine She cracks me up!!! 3mo
mollyrotondo Mrs W is my favorite! I love how she tells Mrs A to embrace not doing all the work and just walks away when Mrs Fisher asks possessive of things. But then she invites her husband? She‘s taking her newfound happiness too far lol. Her husband admitted to the reader that he wanted to go to Italy and would only take his wife because it would look bad if he didn‘t and she‘s be useful for holding things and watching the luggage. He‘s a jerk. 2mo

Is the house a character you think?
Is it magic?

vlwelser I think the setting is magic. We'll see about the villa. Weird that we're already half way into this. 3mo
Karisa The house and gardens do seem like their own entity. Like Encanto or the house in Beauty and the Beast. It‘s so funny how Lady Caroline and Mrs. Fisher are so possessive of areas of it but also seem to truly appreciate it the least. 3mo
AmyG I do feels as if it‘s the 5th person loving there. And the most likeable! Yes @Karisa…Caroline and Mrs F are too self-centered to appreciate the house. 3mo
See All 7 Comments
DebinHawaii @AmyG I agree, the house is the most likable character in the book (at least so far)! 😆 3mo
bnp I'm more enamored of the gardens & the ocean, the weather being nice enough to be outside 3mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I don't feel like the house is a character, thought like the others, I like it best, but it is a luxurious setting. If it can transform these women in the second half, then I'll deem it magical. I can't imagine having the audacity to arrive early and claim entire areas of a house/grounds for myself when I was INVITED. Caroline & Ol' Stick Up the Ass are a couple pieces of work. 3mo
mollyrotondo @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I agree with you at this point in the book. I feel like the it hasn‘t transformed them enough yet. Mrs Wilkins is the only who has been effected by the house so far but in an odd way; sort of a misguided way maybe? But Caroline and Mrs Fisher are taking possession of areas of the house and instead of letting the house speak to them. And poor Mrs A is trying to keep from chastising everyone‘s annoying behavior 😆 2mo

First of all pasta, in ITALY…I needed a moment🍝
Then I saw this on IG https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cam07cYI_Dw/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

I love the descriptive nature of this book. Anyone else notice how enticing it is?

tpixie Oh my! Yummy! ( just scrolling through- love your photos! ) 3mo
vlwelser I felt sort of bad for the food since they didn't seem to be appreciating it much. The descriptions are great. And that older lady is a trip, not knowing how to eat pasta. 3mo
TheBookHippie @tpixie I love a good pasta. 3mo

TheBookHippie @vlwelser Me too!!!! Poor food… the older lady is a stitch! 🤪 3mo
Karisa @vlwelser Right?! The ladies on vacation were not giving the food its due! Poor Francesca who seemed to take such pride in making it. I like how the people working in the house are each given their moments too. They aren‘t nameless. @TheBookHippie That pasta in the instagram looked amazing! 🤤 3mo
Karisa The descriptions of the food and the setting both seem like the best advertisement for Italy ever! 😊 3mo
AmyG Agreed…descriptions are wonderful. They have pintes such pictures in my mind. And how did my Mother-in-law get in this book???? (Mrs Fisher) 🤣 3mo
Kdgordon88 The descriptions are so lush! And the pasta looks amazing. (edited) 3mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG LMAOROF. 3mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa I had fasting bloodwork 18 hour fast so you know I was food binge scrolling on IG 😬 3mo
Karisa @TheBookHippie Oh wow! That would be tortuous watching that video while fasting! 😂 Hope your tests all come out well 💗 3mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa Thankfully so far it‘s “yup you still have the same diseases you‘ve always had…” 😬. They‘re checking my inflammation levels I was recently officially diagnosed with RA . I have 3 other blood disorders. I‘m a whole lot of fun. I push it, and they let me …sort of. So far I‘ve controlled every thing with food, yoga, exercise and mindfulness ~ I take no meds. Which is unheard of. Hippie. 🙌🏼 I‘m hoping I can just keep going with how I live. 3mo
DebinHawaii I feel very sorry for the household staff and Francesca— Hope she sneaks in a lot of expensive ingredients & charges them well. I do love the descriptions in the book of the food & all the scenery. 3mo
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii I thought about the bill as well!!! 3mo
bnp Yes, the surroundings are enticing. I can't say the people are at this point. 3mo
TheBookHippie @bnp I keep thinking You‘re in ITALY! Cheer up😂🌸🌺. 3mo
Karisa @TheBookHippie (((Hugs)))) 3mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick The descriptions of the food and the grounds is very enticing, but these ladies all seem so damn tedious, especially @AmyG 's mother-in-law. (That gave me a damn good chuckle!) I like Italian food so I've been fiending it. I may have to look up a few recipes and have an impromptu Italy month for Food & Lit. I follow a lot of IG accounts based on Italy & Europe so I've been wanderlusting HARD. 3mo
mollyrotondo I fell way too behind somehow 🤦🏻‍♀️ I‘m taking off a few days this week before my vacation so I‘m catching up! The pasta scene! Hysterical! I mean you‘re in Italy how can you not eat the pasta?! Mrs Fisher is a trip! But then everyone else came in and had trouble eating the pasta too 😂 too funny! I find the dry humor extremely well written! And yes the descriptions are incredible! 2mo

Starting a week late but hopefully I can play catch up on our #sundaybuddyread by Monday.

Today we celebrate abuela's 101st birthday! I have some data entry to do later. Tomorrow I'm being brave and taking my niece out to practice driving.
But first?! Coffee and a book.

AmyG Wow 101! Have a wonderful celebration. And I thought this book read quickly so you should have no problem catching up. 3mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @AmyG The first chapter was slow going but the next 4 were fairly quick. One more for week 1 but I paused to celebrate. I'm not certain she knew what was happening half the time, but she downed a few ounces of merlot and was looking for more. My "MIL" threw out the corks so I took one for the team & drank half a bottle of sauvignon blanc from the bottle. It's a good day. ? 3mo
AmyG Ha! Always good to be a team player! 🤣 (edited) 3mo

TheBookHippie WOWIE 101! So wonderful! I love your input as always! AND next month quite frankly we need you for Simone! HA. 3mo
Smrloomis Wow 101! 🥳 And also yes, you‘re brave 😳😂 Hope it went well! 3mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @TheBookHippie Never fear! I skipped The Broken Girls for some reason, but I'm on board for all the Simone! I pulled my book out and placed it nearby so I have no excuse to get started in a couple weeks. I will come with bells on and wild theories! 3mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @Smrloomis My niece has been out with the school instructor and my brother a few times. I thought I'd get her to just park a lot and make a bunch of k-turns so she feels confident. She is...not good. I think she'll either be failing or rescheduling her test. 3mo
TheBookHippie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick 🎉🎉🎉🎉🤣🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 3mo
Smrloomis @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I have a lot of sympathy for her. I hated learning to drive and frankly am still not good! 🤦🏻‍♀️ Hope she‘s able to her some good practice in while still being safe 🤞🏽 3mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @AmyG @TheBookHippie @SmrLoomis It's good we celebrated abuela's 101st birthday with the close family. She was put on hospice Monday and passed away yesterday. My guy and his family are of course sad, but after a century of life, it wasn't a surprise so they're all doing OK. 2mo
TheBookHippie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Awe. What a wonderful life. May her memory be such a blessing and live on in all of you. 2mo
Smrloomis @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick glad you all got to celebrate before she went 🥳💗 2mo

TheBookHippie @BookBabe You‘re entitled to your opinion. I‘m not going to get into semantics, these are our guidelines. We‘ve been using them for five years. 3mo
BookBabe So to be clear, you want to accept all viewpoints and be considerate of each person except those who believe the Bible is a book of truth? 3mo
AmyG What about those who do not read the bible or worship Christianity? Like myself? Our book discussions have always been free of religious beliefs and bias. They have been discussions about the book, history, characters etc. No one is saying you cannot or should not post your own beliefs. But this is not the forum for that. @BookBabe (edited) 3mo
