Trainspotting | Irvine Welsh
Brace yourself, America, for Irvine Welsh's Trainspottingthe novel and the film that became the cult sensations of Britain. Trainspotting is the novel that first launched Irvine Welsh's spectacular careeran authentic, unrelenting, and strangely exhilarating episodic group portrait of blasted lives. It accomplished for its own time and place what Hubert Selby, Jr.'s Last Exit to Brooklyn did for his. Rents, Sick Boy, Mother Superior, Swanney, Spuds, and Seeker are as unforgettable a clutch of junkies, rude boys, and psychos as readers will ever encounter. Trainspotting was made into the 1996 cult film starring Ewan MacGregor and directed by Danny Boyle (A Shallow Grave).

Dark and comedic, and at times disturbing. I loved how Welsh has managed to develop such complex characters and humanise them, whilst also embedding political and societal issues in this tapestry of vignettes. The code-switching and use of Scots added another layer of richness as well. Might not be for everyone but it‘s a brilliant novel. 8/10

I liked this a lot but it was hard not to constantly compare it to the film, which I do think was better. I think the film‘s tighter focus on Renton as a single main character worked better than this being like 70% Renton and 30% other people. I did like the Scots prose though, so quite good.

One of my favourite books and films. Have you read/seen Trainspotting? Have you ever been to Scotland and did you like it? I‘ve lived in Edinburgh my whole life and don‘t think I‘d want to live anywhere else! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

AFrostCauseReads What did you like about the book? I never knew it was one, I tried the movie (probably when I was too young) and got confused. Maybe I should try the book! 3y
Cazxxx I liked everything about the book and film. Dark, raw, funny with well written characters. Maybe I found it easier to understand being Scottish with some of the language they used. I thought it was a good take on poverty and addiction especially in the 80‘s. Plus it doesn‘t sugar coat or glamorise drug addiction. I also found the characters well developed and interesting 3y
The_Penniless_Author Loved the movie. It came out when I was in high school and has always been one of those 90s pop culture touchstones that I'll remember forever. I never tried the book, though, since I know it's pretty Scots and slang heavy and wasn't sure if I'd be able to get into a good reading flow. I think now I should give it a try. 3y
See All 6 Comments
Cazxxx @The_Penniless_Author I definitely think it‘s harder to read if you‘re not too familiar with Scottish slang, but if you‘ve seen the film I would imagine it‘ll probably be a bit easier to follow. Both are braw (Scottish for great) anyway! 3y
The_Penniless_Author I'm pretty good at picking up on slang and figuring out what I don't know from context, so I think it's worth giving another shot. As to your other question, I've never visited Scotland, but I'm making a UK/Ireland trip one of my travel priorities for next year. 🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇮🇪🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 3y
Cazxxx @The_Penniless_Author I agree I can figure things out within the context. Oh yay glad you‘re having a uk visit and hope it includes Scotland! I haven‘t been to Ireland yet but I‘d love to go one day 3y

First time I've read this and couldn't put it down, seen the movie over a hundred times, know screenplay off by heart basically; what a great adaptation eh?

Anyway enough of the movie..

This book was absolutely brilliant, I now understand why it's such a cult classic.

It's written so well, the character development is spot on, it's dark, it's hilarious and a true masterpiece.

Go read it ya radge! 👊✊

Book Number 11 off my #BookSpinBingo list

Sadly, it seems like this kind of fiction just isn't written for me. Even though I think it's important, that it is written and allowed to read it, it just doesn't speak to me. I would be interested in getting a tiny view into a life that differs that much from me, but maybe I have to seek that somewhere else.

Books 1-4 of the Mark Renton series, any fans of these books?

I've seen the movie Trainspotting about 200 times but never read the book(s)

Came across these in charity shops and intend to read them in sequence at some point.

I'm enjoying Under The Skin so much, need to make a point of reading more Scots language books. 💫

WellReadCatLady I love these books! Takes awhile to get into the rhythm of the language but it eventually happens. 4y
JaclynW I love the Trainspotting movie!! I didn't realize it was a book series though! I do own the Trainspotting book, but haven't read it. And yes, the language! Those accents!! 4y
eeclayton I read Trainspotting many years ago, what I remember most is the struggle with the language. English isn't my mother tongue and the text was very challenging. Maybe I should try and re-read it some time. 4y

I got this book because I was in the @veggiemama book club, last year. I didn‘t manage to finish it in time, but I‘ve finished it today. I loved this book. I‘m a dialogue fiend, so while reading the entire book in a thick, Scottish accent was hard going, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. This book was heartbreaking, hilarious and intense, as we glimpsed the lives of heroin addicts in the 90‘s, right when the drug was having its heyday.

This is written the way the characters speak - with a Scottish accent and dialect plus all the swear words you can shake a haggis at. It is also written like a collection of short stories, so it's hard to piece it all together and form a cohesive narrative in your mind. I imagine it would be even harder to do if you've not seen the film. I plan to read the other books in the series and possibly Welsh's other works too; I think he's quite a genius.

I watched this movie in college, but I never considered finding a copy of the book until recently when I realized it was on the #1001books list. After listening to about an hour of it, I think the #audiobook was probably a good choice. However, it is still going to require a decent amount of concentration to catch all the meaning, and for once I‘m listening without speeding up the narration.

britt_brooke This has been in my TBR for ages. Glad to know the audio is good. I may go that route when I finally get around to it. 5y
Liz_M I think my mum still hasn't forgiven me for recommending the movie. I haven't gotten around to the book to see how it compares. 5y
Daisey @britt_brooke So glad I got the audio! The first hour was tough as I just listened on my phone while I drove. Then I put in headphones for a walk and found I had started to adjust to the rhythm of the words as well as the headphones helping me focus better. 5y
Daisey @Liz_M I have very vague memories of the movie. The book is more of a short story or vignette style than I was expecting, but I think I'll try to watch the movie again after finishing the book. 5y

For those who've been living under a bridge..

This revolves around various residents of Edinburgh who either use heroin, are friends of the core group of heroin users, or engage in destructive activities that are implicitly portrayed as addictions that serve the same function as heroin addiction. The novel is set in the late 1980s and has been described by as "the voice of punk, grown up, grown wiser and grown eloquent"

Just went to Trainspotting Live at the Edinburgh Fringe! The acting was absolutely phenomenal and i recommend it a lot for the acting and the staging. If I‘m honest I had a few problems with the adaptation - I felt like they edited pretty much all trace of lightheartedness out of it and just left the horrific and depressing things which made it much harder to watch than the film. I wish it had had a bit more light and shade.

I switched to audio (which is brilliant!) because I was struggling with the dialect on the page. Also, I have loved the movie since college, so I knew what I was getting in to.

I freaking loved this book! It‘s sad, dark, and disturbing, but it‘s also hilarious, sarcastic, and completely capable of pulling at your heart strings. All while approximately every other word is profanity, and much of it makes you gag. 🤷🏻‍♀️

At first, Trainspotting may seem like a tough nut to crack. The dialect is stylized, the subject matter is sordid, and the setting may seem too specific for an outsider to relate. But once the reader gets into the swing of the dialogue, the story will flow effortlessly. The themes of Welsh's debut novel are surprisingly universal, and you come to know the characters like old friends. Fans of the film may appreciate the book on a deeper level.
