Trainspotting
Trainspotting | Irvine Welsh
Brace yourself, America, for Irvine Welsh's Trainspottingthe novel and the film that became the cult sensations of Britain. Trainspotting is the novel that first launched Irvine Welsh's spectacular careeran authentic, unrelenting, and strangely exhilarating episodic group portrait of blasted lives. It accomplished for its own time and place what Hubert Selby, Jr.'s Last Exit to Brooklyn did for his. Rents, Sick Boy, Mother Superior, Swanney, Spuds, and Seeker are as unforgettable a clutch of junkies, rude boys, and psychos as readers will ever encounter. Trainspotting was made into the 1996 cult film starring Ewan MacGregor and directed by Danny Boyle (A Shallow Grave).

I got this book because I was in the @veggiemama book club, last year. I didn‘t manage to finish it in time, but I‘ve finished it today. I loved this book. I‘m a dialogue fiend, so while reading the entire book in a thick, Scottish accent was hard going, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. This book was heartbreaking, hilarious and intense, as we glimpsed the lives of heroin addicts in the 90‘s, right when the drug was having its heyday.

This is written the way the characters speak - with a Scottish accent and dialect plus all the swear words you can shake a haggis at. It is also written like a collection of short stories, so it's hard to piece it all together and form a cohesive narrative in your mind. I imagine it would be even harder to do if you've not seen the film. I plan to read the other books in the series and possibly Welsh's other works too; I think he's quite a genius.

Heideschrampf @Cinfhen that's a must watch! The film is one of the best literary adaptation i've seen. The book (and it's pre/sequels) are brilliant in themselves, but colour and music and camera just provide the material with the sensory overload it needs! 6mo

I won‘t be able to participate in today‘s readathon for much of the day, but I do plan to spend some time reading tonight. I‘m listening to this on the way to a school event and hope to finish it this evening. I‘ve come to appreciate it more and more as I listen.

#Readathon #DeweysReadathon #1001books #audiobook #ReadtheWorld #ReadingtheWorld Scotland

Daisey Finished this one and ended up appreciating it so much more than I originally expected. Yes, it is full of foul language, violence, and some gross descriptions, but it also made me consider perspectives and feel empathy in ways I had not before. (edited) 8mo

I watched this movie in college, but I never considered finding a copy of the book until recently when I realized it was on the #1001books list. After listening to about an hour of it, I think the #audiobook was probably a good choice. However, it is still going to require a decent amount of concentration to catch all the meaning, and for once I‘m listening without speeding up the narration.

britt_brooke This has been in my TBR for ages. Glad to know the audio is good. I may go that route when I finally get around to it. 8mo
Liz_M I think my mum still hasn't forgiven me for recommending the movie. I haven't gotten around to the book to see how it compares. 8mo
Daisey @britt_brooke So glad I got the audio! The first hour was tough as I just listened on my phone while I drove. Then I put in headphones for a walk and found I had started to adjust to the rhythm of the words as well as the headphones helping me focus better. 8mo
Daisey @Liz_M I have very vague memories of the movie. The book is more of a short story or vignette style than I was expecting, but I think I'll try to watch the movie again after finishing the book. 8mo

Now listening to Irvine Welsh say so many F words in this Singapore panel, it‘s hilarious. Listening to Mariko Tamaki is a joy. For those who've been living under a bridge..

This revolves around various residents of Edinburgh who either use heroin, are friends of the core group of heroin users, or engage in destructive activities that are implicitly portrayed as addictions that serve the same function as heroin addiction. The novel is set in the late 1980s and has been described by as "the voice of punk, grown up, grown wiser and grown eloquent"

Just went to Trainspotting Live at the Edinburgh Fringe! The acting was absolutely phenomenal and i recommend it a lot for the acting and the staging. If I‘m honest I had a few problems with the adaptation - I felt like they edited pretty much all trace of lightheartedness out of it and just left the horrific and depressing things which made it much harder to watch than the film. I wish it had had a bit more light and shade.

I switched to audio (which is brilliant!) because I was struggling with the dialect on the page. Also, I have loved the movie since college, so I knew what I was getting in to.

I freaking loved this book! It‘s sad, dark, and disturbing, but it‘s also hilarious, sarcastic, and completely capable of pulling at your heart strings. All while approximately every other word is profanity, and much of it makes you gag. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Cathythoughts Oh yes I love the train. & the train station 👍reading on the train & gazing out the window, having coffee & a treat on the train 👍❤️❤️❤️ 2y
Izai.Amorim @Nikki15 They are great, used only for short trips, no board restaurant. I don‘t know why they don‘t make them for long distance travel. Probably too high to make the curves at high speed. 2y
Izai.Amorim @Cathythoughts ... and enough legroom, wide seats, onboard restaurant.., 👏👏 2y
Izai.Amorim @Balibee146 @batsy @speljamr @Libby1 @nikki15 @Cathythoughts All things considered (getting to airport, checking in, wait, etc.) any train ride shorter than 4 hours is quicker and more comfortable than flying to the destination. I‘m willing to put up with a few more hours just to avoid the airport experience. 2y
Cinfhen Yes!!love train travel but in the US it gets to be VERY EXPENSIVE 2y
Izai.Amorim @Cinfhen Yes, in Europe there are more subsidies. And the population density helps a lot. In the US you have a few pockets with a lot of people like New England but mostly empty spaces. I took a long-distance train there only once, from NYC to Cincinnati. Not many people on board. Basically farmland everywhere. Amtrak train, I believe. Had a vet bad image at the time. “What? You took the Amtrak train? Poor you.” 😂 2y
speljamr @Izai.Amorim What my fellow Americans can't seem to appreciate is that there is no better way to see our own country than by taking the Amtrak. Far less hassle than an airport. I would always rather take a road trip by car or the train over flying. Poor you? No, you got to see what too many Americans fail to appreciate. 2y
Izai.Amorim @speljamr You are right, not only the landscape but also the people riding the train were very interesting. I had the impression that most were working class, don‘t remember seeing anyone who could be taken for middle or upper middle class. I also once took a Greyhound bus from Ann Arbor, Michigan, to Cincinnati and back. Also here a great experience. Also here a class divide. Maybe people meant “poor you” in the real sense of the word? 2y
Laura317 I'd love to have a train near me. I think they are romantic 2y
Izai.Amorim @Laura317 Where are you? 2y
Laura317 East Tennessee. @Izai.Amorim 2y
DivineDiana Yes, I love taking the train! I often travel regional rail going into the city. But I was just lamenting the ticket price increase to travel the train between cities has become such that I now take a bus. I would like to see the government do something to encourage more train travel. 2y
Izai.Amorim @DivineDiana Train is more expensive than bus. Here in Germany until a few years ago no bus service between cities was allowed, only metropolitan. There were only trains. For some reason they liberalized it. Now bus travel is taking a lot of business away from rail. In the future a lot of local trains will disappear, which is sad. Only the long-distance intercity trains have a safe chance. Government regulation can make or break markets. 2y
LauraBeth I ❤️ the train! I used to have to travel back and forth from NYC to DC and while all of my colleagues flew the route - I took the train and always beat them there 😀 And my highlight would come when we‘d have to go to London every other year and we‘d get to take the train to Farnborough every day. 2y
Izai.Amorim @LauraBeth Oh, I want to take this train someday NYC to DC. Never been to DC. 😞 I made a short journey by train once from NYC to New Haven in Connecticut, visited Yale. That train ride felt like in Europe: very densely populated area, train full, people commuting to work, etc. (edited) 2y
SilversReviews I LOVE the train. I always take it from Pittsburgh to New York Penn and back again. 2y
Izai.Amorim @SilversReviews Cool! That‘s about 5 hours? The perfect train ride! 2y
SilversReviews @Izai.Amorim No...it is about 8 hours, but I keep busy reading and playing on the computer. :) 2y
Izai.Amorim @SilversReviews It‘s also 7 hours from Munich to Berlin. It‘s long but one can read. I prefer 4 to 5 hours. 2y

At first, Trainspotting may seem like a tough nut to crack. The dialect is stylized, the subject matter is sordid, and the setting may seem too specific for an outsider to relate. But once the reader gets into the swing of the dialogue, the story will flow effortlessly. The themes of Welsh's debut novel are surprisingly universal, and you come to know the characters like old friends. Fans of the film may appreciate the book on a deeper level.

#FunFridayPhoto I usually try to read the book before I watch the movie, but this was a notable exception to the rule. I probably watched this movie a dozen times before I picked up the novel. And I may actually enjoy the film more for that reason...I know, what a terrible thing to say. It's about a group of heroin addicts in 1980s Scotland. One tries to get clean but can't seem to escape the bad influence of his mates.
