Mrs. Everything
Mrs. Everything | Jennifer Weiner
From Jennifer Weiner, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Who Do You Love and In Her Shoes comes a smart, thoughtful, and timely exploration of two sisters' lives from the 1950s to the present as they struggle to find their places--and be true to themselves--in a rapidly evolving world. Mrs. Everything is an ambitious, richly textured journey through history--and herstory--as these two sisters navigate a changing America over the course of their lives.

A story of two sisters growing up with very different, difficult struggles. The first half is the growing up years, highlighting the crises that damage the relationships, and is quite sexual. The second half is their adult lives and the reparation of relationships. The last quarter reads like a very long epilogue. As a reader invested in the characters, I understand the author wanting to wrap up every loose end, but it was too much.

Jennifer Weiner writes such complicated characters that I knew my head had to be in the right place before engaging in the lifespan of the Kaufman sisters. In ‘In Her Shoes‘ fashion there were times when I wished the author would have led one or the other down a different path. That‘s the way it goes though, sisters don‘t always take the path we‘d choose for them.

I've always enjoyed Jennifer Weiner's writing, and this was a great read. It took me awhile to get hooked into the characters, but once I did I couldn't put the book down. I love how her characters feel so real.

I started reading this book several times and stopped because I could not connect with the characters. As I pushed through the book, I began to feel a sense of unreality, as if the author were deliberately including every single horrible thing that could have possibly happened to these sisters. But, this is where I had the pleasure of reading today, so it‘s all good!

Highly recommend. This book tells the story of 2 daughters and the ways they change thru the years . A struggle with sexuality and a marriage versus a life spent wandering the world after a series of tragedies. Enjoyed the story of sisters.

I have always been a fan of Jennifer Wiener. Her characters have always been relatable and engaging with stories I've always been entertained by. This book is different from her others in the overall message. She skillfully presents the struggles women have faced & still. I say skillfully because non of it sounds sanctimonious or bashes you over the head, as its the skillfully woven backstory. The unnamed character that's ever present

This is completely event driven book. Although I liked the two sisters POV, with so many events occurring in the book, it felt as though we were just moving from one thing to another without spending some time to develop characters. This could have been a great read but needed more restraint- either 1 sister POV, 1/2 as many traumatic events, or 150 more pages. Or, I just need to focus on my TBR pile and not attempt mass market books.

Megabooks I bailed, too. 4w

I loved this book. So much was relatable to me as a woman from a similar era. This is definitely establishing Ms Weiner as a more serious author. I would recommend this highly. I‘m so sorry that I had to miss Barnes and Noble book discussion. I‘m sure it would have been lively. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

I picked this one up bc it was getting a lot of feminist hype, and also bc I enjoy books that span across the life of main character. I felt like JW almost went into this trying to cram as much in as she could: injustices with race, socioeconomic status, LGBTQ+ issues ,sexual assault, and abortion.I liked the characters as a whole and enjoyed the commentary, but it felt like it was a bit much overall. 3.5 stars. I liked this, especially the relationship between Jo and Bethie and how women‘s roles have changed (or not changed) in the latter years of the 20th century. But it felt very draggy to me, with some parts rendered so beautifully early in the book and then others very slapdash later in the book. Could have used some balance in the narrative pacing.

3.5 stars
An epic family saga following two sisters from their childhood in the 1950s to present day.
It was atmospheric but suffers from trying to cram two life stories (all the events & emotions!) into 400 pages.

I thought some of Bethie‘s experiences in the beginning of the book were not very genuine and yes, the author did try to throw everything in there that she could. The story might have benefitted by being told in the first person. But I think she was trying to create a difference in life experience with the sisters. Overall a good story about the roles we feel we are supposed to play in life and how it shapes our decisions and our future.

Mrs. Everything is the saga of two sisters who couldn't be more opposite coming of age in the era of Woodstock, Vietnam, women's liberation, & so much more. It's an engrossing exploration of two women trying to find their place in the world -- & a timely reminder of how much further women have to go to achieve equality. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

As a fan of Jennifer Weiner‘s books, I could not wait to read this one. I was not disappointed. The story pulled me in quickly. The use of dual narrators keeps the readers interest because there is always a little bit of the story hanging in question until you return to that particular narrator. My only criticism is the overall pervasive feeling of sadness and dissatisfaction of the characters.

Told in dual narratives, Weiner explores the complexities of female relationships, the difficulties woman face, as well as the expectations placed on women. She tackles some heavy issues: sexuality, racism, abortion, religion, etc.
Jennifer, I applaud you for telling stories that resonate. This novel is not only timely, but incredibly moving and poignant. Appropriately titled Mrs. Everything, this book is a bit of everything for every woman.

I really enjoyed this novel. This was the first book I've read by this author. I also do not read books in this genre very often and I was impressed by this author and this novel in general, I liked both characters but the character that resonated with me the most was Bethie. Jo's youngest daughter reminds me of my little sister. I also liked the issues adressed in this book.

This is Jennifer Weiner‘s best work. I laughed and I cried, in equal measures — the sign of a truly good work of fiction. The lesson of this book for women in America: We have come so far. We have lots of choices to be wives or mothers or career-focused women or stay-at-home moms or a mixture of all of the above. But, we are not there yet. We are not on the other side of the equity fight. Don‘t give up.

I wish there had been a trigger warning. So, see mine in the spoiler comment below. I'm bailing at 42% (over 7 hours in!!!). I only gave it this much time because Weiner is one of my faves (at least In Her Shoes is). In addition to being traumatized, I was pretty seriously bored before this point—it's a bit tedious.

ohyeahthatgirl I felt the same way about The Wangs Vs. The World by Jade Chang. I haven't seen/heard anyone else talk about it, so maybe it's just the way I read it but that's a yikes from me. 2mo
Cinfhen I read this about a month ago. I already forgot most but in case u care, Bethie ends up living on a commune, falls in love and marries an African American man, becomes a millionairess ( she grows and produces some sort of jam(?) ) her sister ( already forgot her name) finds out her husband is cheating on her with one of her neighbors, they divorce, she reconnects with her college girlfriend, they become a couple. One of her daughters sort of 👇🏼 2mo
See All 10 Comments
Cinfhen Sort of follows the footsteps of Bethie and becomes a free spirit. Her older sister gets her an internship at a magazine, where the boss makes a move on her, she tells her sister who doesn‘t believe her ( a nod to the #MeToo movement) the sisters stop talking and then Bethies sister finds out she has breast cancer, which she ultimately dies from. And then somebody adopts a baby but I can‘t remember the specifics of that one. I forgot already. 2mo
