The Director: A Novel | Daniel Kehlmann

Pickpick

This is a WWII historical fiction novel about GW Pabst, his family‘s move back to Vienna, and his focus on making art. I wasn‘t familiar with this storyline at all, and the reliableness of the narrator and following his artistic design of movies was an interesting way to tell this story. Making art, while compromising values for survival, is at the heart of the one.

Pickpick

Qualified pick, only because it does get into the weeds with respect to the level of detail in parts. But, absolutely pertinent in a world bent toward fascism.

Do mental illnesses and/or personality disorders account for mass cruelty and disregard for human life & suffering? We seem reluctant to admit normally adjusted people can join or tolerate monstrous movements and actions.

Apparently the new film covers a shorter time period.

Mehso-so

Disappointing. Baldacci is usually much more nuanced and often builds such strong characters. This one just fell a little flat. Still an interesting story and strong friendships explored in a challenging time so I don‘t regret listening. But not his best. Plus one of the characters in the audio sounded too much like J Peterman. 🧐 Really distracting!

willaful

I read this solely for @Faranae's #URC and it was a pleasant surprise! I loved reading about women pilots in WW2. (My late mother-in-law took flying lessons back then but her instructor made a pass at her and she quit. 😡 She would have enjoyed this.)

The modern day part of the story was a bit goofy, but satisfying. Sookie is a middle-aged Southern housewife who's long been under the thumb of her domineering, narcissistic mother. cont.

willaful When she makes a shocking discovery about her family history, she's discombobulated enough to seek therapy -- clandestinely, at a Waffle House! -- and begins to accept herself and bloom. It tends towards the silly but it's quite a feel good read (except for one kind of horrible turn of the story into true darkness.) 6d
