The Stranger's Child | Alan Hollinghurst
post image
Bailedbailed

I was sure I would love this book. Hollinghurst is such a good writer and I love his English-ness and his plots. At least I did in In the Line of Beauty and The Swimming Pool Library.
So I didn‘t want to give up but halfway through this one I had to admit I wasn‘t in the least interested in the parade of characters that came and went. It is more a portrait of England in the 20th century than a novel I think. For me that didn‘t work. #manbooker

BarbaraBB I read this book for #ATY2019: book by an author who has more than one book on your TBR. 3w
TrishB I‘m hoping to get to In the Line of Beauty soon! 3w
saresmoore Good to know! I really liked The Line of Beauty, too. 3w
erzascarletbookgasm Bummer :( 3w
Cathythoughts I got a sample ( my new plan .. ) of In The Line Of Beauty last night @TrishB ... I‘ll get it for holls if I like it 👍🏻 3w

I have been meaning to read this #ManBooker winner for over 2 years now. So I scooped it up on sale for $1.99 (#Kindle and Apple Books)! I know it's a strange book and reviews are mixed, but I kind of like strange books so we'll see how this goes. 🤔 #kindledeal #kindledeals

Jee_HookedOnBookz I like strange books too! And mixed reviews always pique my curiosity! 😅 3mo
lele1432 @Jee_HookedOnBookz yesss lol I always have to see for myself! 🤓 3mo

Pickpick

“... that I came to understand how much I‘d been closed down, how much I‘d been thwarted into a carefully constructed nothingness by that man.”

Was it really so hard, living in Belfast during the Troubles? I had no idea. Middle Sister‘s live is aimed at survival. Nearly-Boyfriend is her saviour but then Milkman appears, the paramilitair who stalks her.

BarbaraBB The book is wonderful but difficult to read. I had a hard time staying focussed. Yet I really admire Middle Sister and Anna Burns. 3mo
TrishB Still on the fence with this one! 3mo
RaimeyGallant Reading and loving right now! 3mo

Libby1 It can be pretty tricky living in NI even now. I used to live in a community similar to the one described in the book. It was tense then. We had bomb scares and I could see cars burning from the bedroom window. 3mo
Rachel_nyc Yeah, glad you liked it. Will be getting to it in about a week. 3mo
BarbaraBB @Libby1 Even now? I really didn‘t know. Of course I knew/know the facts but I had no idea of its impact on everyday life and on all people. How terrifying. 3mo
Simona It‘s the best stream of consciousness I have read so far in contemporary literature, difficult yes, but extremely well done. 3mo
BarbaraBB @Simona I agree, I haven‘t come across such stream-of-conscience writing before. 3mo
Marina_h Great review! I've heard it's not an easy read, but my husband is from NI so it's a book I'll have to give a go. 3mo
BarbaraBB @Marina_h Oh then you definitely should. As I said above, I learned a lot about the situation there. 3mo
BarbaraBB @WanderingBookaneer Smart choice! I chose the Tournament of Books as a theme and have read two finalists. Are you reading #ATY2019 in order as well? 3mo
WanderingBookaneer Yes, I always do. Otherwise it doesn‘t feel as challenging. 3mo
BarbaraBB @WanderingBookaneer Great, this is my first ATY and I‘m loving it. I‘ll follow your choices! 3mo
WanderingBookaneer I often forget to tag them, but I‘ll try to remember. 😬 I know my next one (after the back to backs) will be a mystery, 3mo
BarbaraBB @WanderingBookaneer I‘ll read a mystery too, a Japanese to be specific, I love them! 3mo
BarbaraBB @WanderingBookaneer For a real person I‘m thinking of 3mo
WanderingBookaneer Both of those sound good. I haven‘t decided about my real person yet. 3mo
BarbaraBB @WanderingBookaneer For which prompt is Esther the Wonder Pig? 3mo
WanderingBookaneer The Chinese Zodiac prompt 3mo
BarbaraBB @WanderingBookaneer Of course! I‘ll read for that prompt 3mo

The Sisters Brothers | Patrick DeWitt

Pickpick

Eli Sister is one if the infamous Sisters brothers, hitmen. On horsebacks on their way from Oregon to gold digging California, this may seem a cliché western novel, but it‘s so much more. Eli is the softer of the brothers and he is a fantastic narrator, who thinks of life, the world around him and his role in it. A great read, funny and sad.

squirrelbrain Did you use it for Oregon or California? 4mo
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain Oregon! I think California will be easy to accomplish and about half of the book takes place in Oregon. 4mo
BarbaraBB @Librarybelle It is a good one! 4mo
BarbaraBB @Kayla.Adriena Yes definitely. A pleasant surprise! 4mo
squirrelbrain That makes sense @BarbaraBB - California‘s probably as easy as NYC! I‘ll add this to my prospective list for Oregon! 4mo
Pamwurtzler I have that on hold at the library. Glad to know it‘s good! 4mo
hilded I haven‘t decided which book to read for this prompt yet, so this could be a good option 👍 Thanks for the tip 😊 4mo
vivastory So happy you liked this one! 4mo
BarbaraBB @vivastory Very much actually. A pleasant surprise! 4mo
BarbaraBB @vivastory This was my first DeWitt. I will look our for more. Thanks for the rec! 4mo
vivastory Also, I haven't read it yet but I have heard nothing but great things about his latest 4mo

#ToB2019 9/18 #ManBooker

This was an amusing kind of adventure / coming of age novel. Wash is a slave that escapes in an air balloon with a white man who means the world to him from then on. He will follow him everywhere.
I enjoyed it but may have missed a deeper meaning?

Since it is 2019 already in the East I think I am allowed to count this book for #ATY2019 ‘s first prompt, ‘A book that was nominated for or won an award‘ 😉

Ruthiella I did not love this book as much as others either. But other readers on the TOB group discussion on goodreads are finding all sorts of interesting correlations and underlying meaning. If it is there, I missed it totally. 5mo
BarbaraBB @Ruthiella That‘s interesting to check out, I missed it too obviously. Glad I am not the only one! 5mo
Simona We agree on the one 😘 5mo
batsy I'm a bit on the fence about whether to read this one! The "adventure tale" aspect makes me a bit nervous ? 5mo

My next pick for #adventrecommends is probably not so well known here on Litsy. It‘s the first book in a trilogy set in North of Norway right before, under and after WW2 about family dynamics living quite isolated on an island. This first book got shortlisted for the #manbooker. Lovely trilogy close to my heart as the story is quite similar to the story of my grandmother.

mabell How neat that you can have that connection with your grandmother's story through this trilogy! 5mo

Pickpick

Four generations of a middle-class American family, living in the suburbs of Baltimore. Nothing much happens to them, they live and love and lie and make mistakes. This easily could have been a cheesy novel, but it isn‘t. As homely and cosy as it is, Anne Tyler takes it beyond cheesiness and creates a family I want to know all about. #manbooker #Booked2018 #MCover70

Cinfhen I bailed on this because at the 70 page mark nothing was happening and I sort of saw where it was heading. Glad u liked it and great choice for this prompt!!! 7mo
TheCuriousHousecat I loved this book. The author has a fine perception and details family nuances with ease. 7mo
4thhouseontheleft Ooohhh....I still need to pick something for this prompt, and I own this one! I like Anne Tyler‘s books. 7mo
