The Khao San Road, Bangkok -- first stop for the hordes of rootless young Westerners traveling in Southeast Asia. On Richard's first night there, in a low-budget guest house, a fellow traveler slashes his wrists, bequeathing to Richard a meticulously drawn map to "the Beach."The Beach, as Richard has come to learn, is the subject of a legend among young travelers in Asia: a lagoon hidden from the sea, with white sand and coral gardens, freshwater falls surrounded by jungle, plants untouched for a thousand years. There, it is rumored, a carefully selected international few have settled in a communal Eden.Haunted by the figure of Mr. Duck -- the name by which the Thai police have identified the dead man -- and his own obsession with Vietnam movies, Richard sets off with a young French couple to an island hidden away in an archipelago forbidden to tourists. They discover the Beach, and it is as beautiful and idyllic as it is reputed to be. Yet over time it becomes clear that Beach culture, as Richard calls it, has troubling, even deadly, undercurrents.Spellbinding and hallucinogenic, The Beach by Alex Garland -- both a national bestseller andhis debut--isa highly accomplished and suspenseful novel thatfixates on a generation in their twenties, who, burdened with the legacy of the preceding generation and saturated by popular culture, long for an unruined landscape, but find it difficult to experience the world firsthand.

First book to finish this year! Not very wintery but I started it on a holiday so I guess that‘s alright.

Richard follows a secret map to a paradise beach in Thailand. He soon adapts to the life there and tries to protect it at all costs. Unfortunately, it cannot be protected forever…

It started slow but it was captivating as I was living this experience as Richard. Definitely a pick if you haven‘t seen the movie!

I read this with my book group. Sadly it wasn‘t my cup of tea. I couldn‘t engage with it although I think it‘s well written and even easy to read. The ending just left me thinking, well, what was that all about, then? Much ado about nothing. 🤷‍♀️

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I did this backward. I loved this film many years ago, and at the time, didn‘t realize it was a novel. It feels like a fairly realistic commune. And it didn‘t hurt that I was picturing Leo and Tilda Swinton as the leads. It‘s an island with a naturally formed hierarchy, alliances, etc. They SOUGHT a utopian society. Stop the Lord of the Flies comparisons. Ralph, Piggy and all had NO choice but survival. But I digress. This is good! ⬇️

britt_brooke Ugh, I hate movie tie-in covers. (edited) 3y
MommyOfTwo I didn‘t know it was a book! I remember seeing it in the theater! 3y
britt_brooke @MommyOfTwo I didn‘t know until maybe a couple of years ago! It‘s crazy how many things were adapted back before it seemed so prevalent. It‘s such a good movie! I‘m planning to watch it again soon. From what I recall, it def did the book justice. Trainspotting is another one. Planning to read that soon. 3y

vivastory Great review! Looking forward to your thoughts on Trainspotting. I went through a brief Irvine Welsh phase that ended when I read his book Filth. I will say that Trainspotting has several vivid drug scenes that continue to haunt me years later. 3y
britt_brooke @vivastory I haven‘t read any of his books ... yet! 😅 I‘m going to need to be in the right headspace - whatever that is - for Trainspotting. I‘ll tag you when I get to it. 3y
Cinfhen I had this book sent to Florida ~ so it‘s here waiting for me ❣️❣️❣️well actually, my SIL already pilfered my copy😉so it‘s actually in her apartment 😁 you‘re blowing through so many books!!! Audiobooks are amazing 3y
ElizaMarie I didn't realize this was a book! I am definitely stacking it! 3y
JamieArc I read this book in high school and it‘s one of the books I remember really well! As for Trainspotting, I had to read that for a class and I remember hating reading it just because I couldn‘t understand the written-in accent. Audiobook would have made it much better for me. 3y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen I think you‘ll like this! I‘m hoping to rewatch the movie soon. Are you in the states now?? And yes ... audiobooks are a total game changer! I often listen to several hours a day. 🎧🙌🏻 3y
britt_brooke @ElizaMarie It‘s a good read! Hope you enjoy it, too. 3y
britt_brooke @JamieArc That‘s good to know about Trainspotting. I‘ll def go audio! 3y

Searching for adventure and for a place not yet spoilt by tourists, narrator Richard and some other backpackers strand on an unknown island off the coast from #Thailand. Other people are already living there, all in search of their own Utopia. Things go smoothly for a while but then Lord of the Flies meets Lost and things start falling apart. Fun read, nothing special.

This book is really of its time, but heh! The main guy is a Brit.... what‘s an American dude like Leo doing in the lead role of the equally generation defining movie? Guess it‘s got something to do with Dollars. Love the book and the film has all the ‘moments‘ it can take from the story. Alex Garland a bit cool writing and directing Ex Machina

This is book #1 for my summer reading. It was a good book to kick off my summer. Mr. Garland has successfully created an atmosphere of the secret beach and the hippie community. I felt the heat and the saltiness of the air. The ending also has a good twist, totally unexpected (I haven't watched the film!).

Reading The Beach at the beach! Definitely a must read for adventurers and adrenaline junkies. It‘s a book that will never lose its relevance. Today‘s millennials are as free spirited and full of angst as the backpackers in the book. In reading their story, I find resolution to some of my own angst about coming to be.

I really like the premise of this book and find a lot of it disturbing and scary in a lot of ways. But I just really hated the main character and I felt like unfortunately it was dated in ways that caused a disconnect. It was an interesting book, just not a favorite for me.

I feel like this book was a victim of the times. Disappearing for months on end in a foreign country just doesn‘t seem possible these days. I kept thinking ‘when are these people going to call their parents?!‘ Or ‘why does no one care that they are missing?‘ That aside there is a lot of adult Lord of the Flies action and some really great descriptions of Thailand.

BookishTrish It was pretty doable back in the 90s 6y
