This is book #1 for my summer reading. It was a good book to kick off my summer. Mr. Garland has successfully created an atmosphere of the secret beach and the hippie community. I felt the heat and the saltiness of the air. The ending also has a good twist, totally unexpected (I haven't watched the film!).

Sorry 😔

Literary_Siren I bailed on this. It‘s waaaaaay too dry. 5y
bookworm.krizia @Literary_Siren did think about it! But if I was able to finish "Moby Dick" then I could do it with "Wolfhall" haha I don't see the clamor for this one 5y

This is a scientific, biographical book about a dead woman‘s cells. It is important to note that this woman‘s cells saved and is continuing to save millions of lives and that she is black woman. I loved how it centered on Henrietta‘s family especially Deborah. It gives you an idea on who Henrietta really is: she is not just a bunch of cells. She is someone‘s mother, sister and wife.

This could have been a shorter book. Melville created multiple chapters explaining and discussing the sperm whale‘s head, right whale‘s head, different kinds of whale and their classifications. It was like reading an encyclopedia rather than a story.

DGRachel I hated this book so much. 6y
bookworm.krizia @DGRachel but most of my friends loved it. I don‘t know why..🙄 6y
DGRachel I read it one summer in college because my favorite professor insisted that every student of American Literature owed it to themselves to read the novel. It took the entire summer. I guess I just don‘t “get” it. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6y
bookworm.krizia It took me 3 months and I skipped a lot of chapters! Haha 6y

It is a nice book. My son liked it but it did not really stuck with him. I think it was a bit overrated. He also got kinda scared at first.

Tamra This one has stuck with me all my life. I think I didn‘t really understand he was using his imagination until I was much older and then it was a revelation. The art was strangely appealing as a child too. (edited) 6y

It was a good selection of short stories. I love how open ended most of them are. I also love the fact the most of them have multiple interpretations. Two stories stuck out to me, "A Perfect Day for Bananafish" and "Teddy". Both have controversial and gory endings.
