I feel like this book was a victim of the times. Disappearing for months on end in a foreign country just doesn‘t seem possible these days. I kept thinking ‘when are these people going to call their parents?!‘ Or ‘why does no one care that they are missing?‘ That aside there is a lot of adult Lord of the Flies action and some really great descriptions of Thailand.

BookishTrish It was pretty doable back in the 90s 6y

I adore this series! Holding the second one here and excited to read it. It‘s a rainy day heartwarming read. Definitely for kids but definitely a good story!

I had a hard time with this one. If you‘re a fan of her sense of humor then you‘ll likely enjoy. The structure for me also didn‘t help - essay style and really a lot of them read like her blog posts.

Armada: A Novel | Ernest Cline

Pickpick

If Ready Player One left an Ernst Cline shaped whole in your heart then Armada will do a pretty good job of filling it. Male protagonist, cute family story, video games, schoolyard drama, space aliens, a love interest and of course lots of 80s references await!

Of all the books in this #bookstack The Paper Menagerie has to be the one that has left the biggest impression - and renewed my love for short stories!

Picked this one up in a mildly vain attempt to try whatever I can to understand the experience of my boyfriend‘s family in Canada... they‘re West Indian immigrants to Toronto. I enjoyed this read ironically more about what it showed myself about my own relationship with my parents.

A must-read if you enjoy a laugh out loud cultural assimilation piece or have ever spent some time on tiny islands, especially those in the South Pacific!

After reading RP1 there was a Ernest Cline shaped hole in my heart and Armada did a pretty good job of filling it! If you loved RP1 you‘ll at least like Armada, and if you loved Armada you‘ll be beyond enthralled with RP1.

If you have any sort of soft spot for Russian history you‘ll adore this memoir. Part of the fun in it for me was catching her numerous references to Russian lit and of course her mouth water descriptions of various Soviet dishes. It‘s a unique and compelling way to write a history and I adored it.

One of the things I appreciate most about this novel is the merging of modern technology with the ancient and books with sci fi. It‘s a fantastic combination!
