The Thin Man | Dashiell Hammett
55 posts | 70 read | 33 to read
Nick and Nora Charles are Hammett's most enchanting creations, a rich, glamorous couple who solve homicides in between wisecracks and martinis. At once knowing and unabashedly romantic, The Thin Man is a murder mystery that doubles as a sophisticated comedy of manners. From the Trade Paperback edition.

#TLT @dabbe
1. Nick and Nora Charles from the tagged book and film series. Great noir novel from a master of the genre, and just the most charming couple of detectives to ever light up the screen 🤩
2. Frodo and Sam from LoTR. I don't think any justification is required here! 🧑🧒
3. Well, as you took Holmes and Watson already... 🤔💭 I'll go with Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser from Fritz Leiber's Swords series of fantasy stories ⚔️

dabbe #1: YES! I absolutely adore the book and the movies! #filmnoirrocks
#2: Best hero/sidekick duel (next to Sherlock & Watson, of course! 🤣)
#3: And you gave me two I've never heard of but will have to now look into!

Minimalist prose with snappy dialogue and ever so many cocktails. The Thin Man is narrated from Nick's POV, so it is in some ways different to the movie, but every bit as much fun. Return of the Thin Man is literally the movie scripts for film 2&3, so it doesn't read as well. The notes on the text were interesting though.

#EasterCrime

I'll probably start with the tagged book and its sequel even though they won't be much of a mystery as the movie adaptations are faves I have watched numerous times.

My #longlist reviews will recommence sometime next week.

dabbe I love Dashiell Hammett! The first two Thin Man movies are among my top faves as well! 💜 13mo

Everyone here was right—this movie is a gem. *This* is the pinnacle of noir & screwball comedy & perfect for the holidays since it begins on Christmas Eve & ends on NYE. Shockingly the book that it's based on pales in comparison #themoviewasbetter

William Powell & Myrna Loy are delightful, but a special shoutout to the dog that plays Asta 😆

I expected this to be the pinnacle of noir slash screwball comedy based on all the raves, but it was largely ... fine? I read it for #cloakanddaggerchristmas for the Tommy & Tuppence prompt, for a mystery featuring a great team. This was more about Nick, a former private detective, doing the detecting, & Nora, his wife, pouring out drinks & getting hit across the face when a gun was pointed at her to prevent a "feminine brainstorm" i.e. hysteria.

batsy I also prepared myself for all the fast-talking wit but I can't remember laughing or chuckling or even cracking a smile 😶 Events proceeded in a nutty way; a murderer was apprehended. It has a touch of louche glamour but it didn't do much for me. All in all, it was fine. In fact at points it might have even sucked, lol. It's a short book & I struggled to get back into it everytime I put it down. I still want to give the movie a chance, though. 2y

DGRachel I know my mom loves Nick & Nora from the films, so hopefully that will be more fun for you. I‘ve discovered that Classic Noir is problematic at best and noir is something I love. Those old ones, though…ooofff. 2y
TheAromaofBooks This is one of the rare cases where the movies are such perfection that I'm scared to read the book - usually the other way around!! 😂 2y
Billypar I love this review 😅 And I'm with @mabell and @TheAromaofBooks - I have a feeling the movies are probably better (if not more progressive), though I've read little noir to know for sure. 2y
batsy @mabell @DGRachel @TheAromaofBooks I'm hearing this a lot 😁 I think the movie(s) seem to be classics in their own right. I love a lot of film noir; maybe a lot of what is problematic in the novel is improved upon in the film adaptations by good acting and directing. I can't wait to watch it! 2y
batsy @Billypar Haha, thank you! I haven't read a lot of hardboiled/noir fiction up to this point either, but I loved what little I've read of Chandler. 2y
LeahBergen I have a fondness for the terrier in the films. 😆 2y
BarbaraBB I didn‘t watch the movie but so remember being underwhelmed by the book too. My favorite noir writer is Dorothy B Hughes. I loved both The Expendable Man and 2y
batsy @LeahBergen I had to look up that doggo and now I'm even more eager to watch the film 😆 2y

I‘m going to tentatively give this a pick, although I didn‘t enjoy it nearly as much as I should have because I listened to the #audiobook and the narrator was awful. That‘s 2 strikes in a row listening to noirish books, but I started a new one today and am quite happy that the narrator is really good. As far as The Thin Man goes, it‘s a rare instance of the movie being better than the book. But Nick & Nora are great characters. 3.5⭐️

dgingo Good narrators make all the difference! 4y

The verdict is in. Not as good as the movie (by far), and you have to overlook a little misogyny. However, I did enjoy the book. It was quick and had some cute banter. And, like a cozy mystery, the murder is almost beside the point.

CaitZ I agree the movie was better than the book. For me the humor came across better in the movie 4y
TheAromaofBooks Great review!! I may have to pick this one up sometime....... or rewatch all the movies 😂 4y

This is considered a classic mystery. I found it just so-so. The central mystery was interesting, but I was distracted by all the alcohol being consumed and one passage I thought was racist. I guess it's a product of its time. It is set at Christmas, so I'm counting it as a #HolidayRead. I'm planning to see the movie in a couple of weeks just to compare it to the book. (21 points)

This is my library‘s book club pick this month, and I was interested to see how it compares with The Maltese Falcon (which I read with the same book club 2 years ago!). The mystery here was satisfying in the end, but too many of the characters annoyed me throughout most of the novel. While Nick & Nora‘s banter provided some levity, this still falls on the side of “hard-boiled” detective fiction. And I do prefer the cozies—Agatha Christie for me!

All the conversations in this book are so *weird*. People just suddenly do things in a slightly disjointed way--the responses don't totally match up with the things they're responding to. I don't know if that's an artifact of the time period or if this is just a weird book. And I don't know if this is the best illustration of the point. It just feels odd to me.

“Nora came in with the coffee. ‘What‘s worrying you now, son?‘ she asked. ‘Things,‘ I said, ‘riddles, lies, and I‘m too old and too tired for them to be any fun. Been a while since I've dropped a review!

I'm still in a detective mood after finishing an Otto Penzler locked-room compendium and IQ by Joe Ide, so I finally read The Thin Man.

It's a good read. Though Hammett throws around 1930s-style casual racism/sexism and doesn't distinguish speakers well, the snappy dialogue is hard to beat. I wonder if the movie is actually better for this one though?

Finding a new thrift store today was meant to be. I got this neat little metal chalice for my egg. And, Nick and Nora are my all-time favorite couple. Both for under $3.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Only seen the first movie. Really need to read the books! 7y

The people who lie the most are nearly always the clumsiest at it, and they're easier to fool with lies than most people, too. You'd think they'd be on the look-out for lies, but they seem to be the very ones that will believe almost anything at all.

Classic detective story and quick read. I thought I had read this one before but it didn't seem at all familiar, so maybe not (or maybe I just have a bad memory).

MaleficentBookDragon I loved the movies. They are some of my all time favorites. 7y
