A light, fast read that is a sweet story but without any real complexity or depth. It‘s not nearly as good as Rowell‘s novels, and as much as the graphic novel is inclusive of LGBTQIA+ characters, it ultimately upholds heteronormative ideology. #BookClub

The Night Circus | Erin Morgenstern
Mehso-so

While there were several elements I liked in the middle of the novel, the imagery & detailed descriptions were the novel‘s strengths. The novel began & ended slowly, dragging more than it should have. The constant shifts in time, place, & narrative POV (the second person was entirely unnecessary) made it difficult to connect some pieces & to create a cohesive timeline, especially before characters were established.

One of Us Is Lying | Karen M. Mcmanus

It was a slow start & a bit of a slog getting into it, but the story became interesting and the characters a little more defined as the book progressed. It wasn‘t as fast of a read as I expected it to be for the genre & considering Kara Thomas‘s review on the back of the book, calling it “an addictive, devour-in-one-sitting thriller,” but it improved & got faster to read, especially after the snail‘s pace start & apathy I felt in the first pages.

dgingo The novel wasn‘t nearly as predictable as some other books in similar genres, although I wouldn‘t call it a thriller, but I did figure out the answer to “Who killed Simon?” well in advance of the characters in the novel. Not exceptional, but by the end, the book, the story had enough complexity to keep me reading and I was invested enough in the characters to finish it and consider it a worthwhile read. 4mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Gaiman is a talented storyteller and this Audible version with a fabulous full cast really brings the book to life. There are a few paths I would have liked to see tread upon and explored and a few unanswered questions answered, but it was an enjoyable story with worthwhile characters that I felt enough about to have shed a tear or two.

Bonus—a short chapter at the end where Gaiman explains the backstory of how this book came to be.

🌟 🌟🌟🌟 The 2nd book in the Lunar Chronicles, and like most series, the second book isn‘t as strong as the 1st, but I enjoyed it. The story jumps back and forth from one story (Scarlet‘s) to the other (Cinder‘s), and it is honestly a little abrupt, but the reader adapts and begins to enjoy both stories. I will finish the series, but I‘m also predisposed to loving fairytale adaptations. I‘m also curious how the characters and the story develops.

Normal People | Sally Rooney

Normal People is about Marianne and Connell, two Irish schoolmates who have a secret relationship that evolves into an intense codependent relationship that lasts through college as each character struggles with her or his identity and place in society. While the two have a complex off-again on-again relationship, the other person is never that far away, even when they are geographically apart. #BOTM #PageTurner

dgingo The story and its two primary characters are engaging from the start and the writing has the reader quickly turning the pages, but I was disappointed not with the ending but with the number of unanswered questions, primarily about Marianne and her family, that the novel seemed to lead the reader to expect would be revealed without address. 6mo

Evil Eye, a short Audible original (not yet in the Litsy listings). Good performances, but the story could have used a little more of a well-balanced story arc—the last half of the story was only about 10% of the length. The climax was a rushed and not clearly narrated and the falling action and denouement were also a little *too* brief; otherwise, a worthwhile listen. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

A quick, enjoyable YA adaptation of Cinderella in a post-WWIV future with cyborgs. Meyer telegraphs her moves and “surprises” way too clearly and early on in the novel, but maybe the target reader wouldn‘t recognize all of them? It was an enjoyable read, regardless. It‘s a good thing I already have the rest of the books in the series.

My first David Sedaris audio book, and it probably won‘t be my last. Neurotic, quirky, and clever, Sedaris shares essays and stories on various topics, some personal and revelatory, others mundane, ordinary, and critical, such as those in which he offers cultural and political commentary. I enjoyed hearing him read, as he himself narrates the Audible book.

dgingo Negative? I just don‘t know how I feel now about traveling to China—he provides some vivid descriptions that, to be honest, has lowered China on my “to travel to” list. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤔 6mo

It was enjoyable and a quick read, but the story arc and ending needed a little work. Some of the story was a tad aimless and there are some unanswered questions and oddities (why Esperanto?), but it was decent overall for a first novel.

Trevor Noah is a good storyteller. His memoir is less about his life and more about language, perspective, difference, race, education, love, family, and his mother's unrelenting faith. His life story is intertwined with his mother‘s, and while these personal events and experiences are interesting, they truly serve simply as a jumping off point, an opportunity to discuss larger, more universal topics--as with most good books. #Audible 📖

dgingo Engaging from start to finish, I highly recommend Born a Crime for its cultural richness, impactful discussions of race, education, and language. Especially language, and the power it wields. 7mo
dgingo But, because language is such an important component, the book's primary weakness is Noah's proclivity to curse--while I don't mind the inclusion of curse/"cuss" words in a story or book when used effectively, he overuses them where they don't add, but actually distract from the story. 4 1/2 ?. 7mo

post image

The bad part about a series/trilogy is that each book, and its final pages, leaves you yearning for the next. I‘m already anticipating the next book and Jude‘s...well, I‘ll omit spoilers. It‘s a good thing Holly Black told us she already has a first draft written of the next book.

dgingo I enjoyed The Wicked King, and a return to Elfhame, but this second book ranks slightly lower than The Cruel Prince. That may be because I like world-building and there was a sizeable gap between books and I didn‘t reread the first book prior to starting the second book, but I‘m really enjoying the series and for YA, I applaud Holly Black‘s diction, specifically, and her writing style, generally. 7mo
dgingo The only downside of the series being YA is the fade-to-black scene and some of the understandable, yet also frustrating, self-censoring of content for her target audience.

Still, I‘m reading eagerly and preparing my saddle for the next, and final, ride. This series has made me a fan of Black and I look forward to reading more.
