The Witching Hour
The Witching Hour | Anne Rice
From the author of the extraordinary Vampire Chronicles comes a huge, hypnotic novel of witchcraft and the occult through four centuries. Demonstrating, once again, her gift for spellbinding storytelling and the creation of legend, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of witches--a family given to poetry and to incest, to murder and to philosophy; a family that, over the ages, is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being. On the veranda of a great New Orleans house, now faded, a mute and fragile woman sits rocking . . . and The Witching Hour begins. It begins in our time with a rescue at sea.Rowan Mayfair, a beautiful woman, a brilliant practitioner of neurosurgery--aware that she has special powers but unaware that she comes from an ancient line of witches--finds the drowned body of a man off the coast of California and brings him to life.He is Michael Curry, who was born in New Orleans and orphaned in childhood by fire on Christmas Eve, who pulled himself up from poverty, and who now, in his brief interval of death, has acquired a sensory power that mystifies and frightens him.As these two, fiercely drawn to each other, fall in love and--in passionate alliance--set out to solve the mystery of her past and his unwelcome gift, the novel moves backward and forward in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and a chteau in the France of Louis XIV.An intricate tale of evil unfolds--an evil unleashed in seventeenth-century Scotland, where the first "witch," Suzanne of the Mayfair, conjures up the spirit she names Lasher . . . a creation that spells her own destruction and torments each of her descendants in turn. From the coffee plantations of Port au Prince, where the great Mayfair fortune is made and the legacy of their dark power is almost destroyed, to Civil War New Orleans, as Julien--the clan's only male to be endowed with occult powers--provides for the dynasty its foothold in America, the dark, luminous story encompasses dramas of seduction and death, episodes of tenderness and healing. And always--through peril and escape, tension and release--there swirl around us the echoes of eternal war: innocence versus the corruption of the spirit, sanity against madness, life against death. With a dreamlike power, the novel draws us, through circuitous, twilight paths, to the present and Rowan's increasingly inspired and risky moves in the merciless game that binds her to her heritage. And in New Orleans, on Christmas Eve, this strangest of family sagas is brought to its startling climax. From the Hardcover edition.

(Day 14: Black) Couple days late and had to go outside in the sweltering southern evening to get any light. With exception of the archaeology book, all were picked up at the #GreenValleyBookFair in Mt. Crawford, VA, in the Shenandoah Valley. Been going there since I was a kid in the mid to late 80s. These days, it‘s a three hr trip one-way, but the prices make it is worth the drive. #ColormePretty @Sweetkokoro

This was my first Anne Rice book. I pretty much want to read everything she has ever written now. As can be expected from a book with 1000 pages, there is a lot going on here! Rice throws in mystery, some romance (which I typically do not enjoy, but it was only overdone in a few places), paranormal/witchcraft themes, and history in this story. All the subject matter keeps it interesting, and the intersections of plot lines are seamless.

This is a series I return to from time to time. It‘s based on a powerful family of female witches spanning centuries. Each generation has a matriarch who inherits a dutiful ghost to do her bidding. It has romance, the supernatural, old houses, and New Orleans. It takes the reader on a journey from the West Coast to the South and around the world. A fabulous book series if you‘re looking for something intriguing and fun.

What a lovely stack of new books thanks to @CindyMyLifeIsLit - some things I‘ve wanted to read for a long time and some I‘ve never heard of and can‘t wait to explore!! Especially excited to do some dream analysis. (Also, the story about the hacker in your letter had me 😂!)

This book is a monster. I absolutely LOVED the historical aspects—centuries of messy, witchy Mayfair family history. I also liked our modern day witch, Rowan, and even her walking cliche of a man, Michael. This was on track to be a 5-star read for me right up until near the end, when Rowan‘s character seemed to change completely, everything went off the rails and Ms. Rice made me mad.

Of course I‘m going to continue the series.😂

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

vivastory Is this the first witch book that Rice has written? 7mo

I forgot to post yesterday, probably because there‘s not much more boring than a walk on a treadmill, fascinating audiobook or no.

The big storm came through Friday night/Saturday morning, and then today we got another random inch or two. So, I‘m on my third day in a row taking my #audiowalk on the dang treadmill. But I got it done!

I‘m about 53% through this book, and using my 2 gigantic Mayfair family trees constantly. 🤪

I first read this trilogy in 1994 when I was in college. I remember really enjoying it then. Rereading it as an adult I still liked it but I don't think as much as I remember. The first book is definitely the best then it kind of goes the way a lot of Rice's books seem to ... weirder and weirder. I liked the stories of the Mayfair witches but anything about Lasher and the Taltos not so much.

OutsmartYourShelf I tried reading this one as a young teenager and I just remember that it scared the hell out of me. I‘ve never even tried to finish it and wonder if it is scary or if I‘ve hyped it up over the years. 1y
Wonderwoman89 My daughter said it is really good and it sounded good. I will let you know how it was when I am finished reading it. 1y
BarbaraTheBibliophage This one is my all-time favorite from Anne Rice. 1y

We only live a couple of hours from New Orleans so we took a last minute Spring Break trip down with the kids. Not much reading getting done but lots if good food and fun times. Hoping to hit some bookstores tomorrow.

GarthRanzz My favourite place in my favourite city! I‘m so jealous right now because I think we have to cancel our scheduled October trip. 1y
Quasifesto I was there Monday and Tuesday. Completely unplanned. Back in Houston now with a cold (or something like it) 1y

That moment when you wake up from the worst nightmare and you just can't fall back asleep, and the wind outside won't leave the blinds alone and it's almost 5 a.m., who you gonna call?

Anne Rice 💖

I just love Anne Rices witches and their habitat of New Orleans. Made a trip there just to stand in front of her home that was used as the Mayfair house. Yes, there were pictures. @mrozzz #cleartheshelves Thank you!

mrozzz Going to search #cleartheshevlesgiveaway at the end of the week, want to make sure you‘re entered! Good luck 🙂 2y

The Witching Hour | Anne Rice
Pickpick

A gem in the world of literature. A lengthy book to be sure, but almost too short considering the scope of the story.

The Witching Hour | Anne Rice

Perhaps one of the finest novels ever written. Perhaps the only critique one could make is that all the pivotal characters are people of means. Only in Michael Curry's youth is there any touch on the working class of people.

BookwormAHN Interview with the Vampire 🖤 2y
bentchbites @BookwormAHN thanks! Im taking note of that but right now im kind of intimidated with the vampire chronicles. 14 books in total if im not mistaken. Haha 2y
BookwormAHN True but the first 3 are the main books. You could try The Mummy, it has a sequel coming out Tuesday but I think both are considered stand a alone. If size doesn't intimidate you The Witching Hour is really good and it's sequels Lasher and Taltos are also good. 2y

bentchbites @BookwormAHN thanks! I thought actually thought there were only three in the series! I remembered to google it only today and learned she added a lot more to the VC. I know of The Witching Hour, but The Mummy is something i will be looking into. Thank you so much!! ❤️❤️❤️ 2y
Chachic I've only ever been to KL! So I haven't visited Melaka. 2y
bentchbites @Chachic I haven't been to KL naman! Nag historical tour kami sa Melaka pero saglit lang din yun. Maliit na place lang kasi, pero ang saya! Haha 2y
